Composer Jon Brion recently recorded his score for the new Will Ferrel / John C. Reilly comedy, Step Brothers. Directed by Adam McKay and produced by Judd Apatow, the music for the film was recorded with an 87-piece orchestra at Sony, and ScoringSessions.com was there to bring you the exclusive photos!

LOL... Dan, spice it up some, every one of your posts about photo splurges at scoringsessions.com reads like a pre-formatted template. How about doing what Varese does when pitching their album. They of course tell you what the movie is, who directed, produced, wrote the score... but they also include some positive impressions on the music itself.

It'd be great to get some context on the actual tunes this 87-piece orchestra is playing; and yah, there's a way to do it without breaching NDA or the confidence of your privileges. You just gotta be creative... and I know you are capable of that.

    Just sayin'.

Very Cool! I love the crazy molding of the "pick a random cue" idea.

Yeah, Cole. I was thinking the same thing. Great schtuff.

Also, to add to what I was saying Dan, maybe copying and pasting a couple select quotes from your commentary and including them in your announcements here would be rad. That'd definitely do the trick.

Jon Brion?! AWESOME!!! That's unexpected actually. I was expecting either Alex Wurman or Theodore Shapiro. I am not a fan of the latter, a lot of his scores sound more like copy-and-paste cues from other scores. But really, that should probably be blamed more on temp scoring than anything else... And he doesn't really compare to Tyler Bates's multiple plagiarisms or Brian Tyler's theme copying... I guess I don't mind Shapiro that much lol

So are you talking about the news item, or the message board post alerting people to the news item?

I'm not gonna repost the full news item here, because it's not likely anyone will click through to it if it's all recreated here. The nine whopping visits I got from this site barely justify my commenting, anyways.

I appreciate your feedback, but maybe you'd be better off if you emailed me directly instead of posting it here.

    Dan

    Thank you Dan!

A new Jon Brion score is always welcome with open arms, but I have a feeling that this year's Visioneers will provide for a better scoring opportunity. I'll certainly keep my ears peeled for this one; but the film doesn't inspire much.

I will only say I agree with Jeron... these announcements all read the same to me.

I am a scanner-type internet reader. If they are all worded the same with a few different pro-nouns being the sum difference from post to post, I've been conditioned to pass over. It's nothing personal, just the result of the style that Jeron is pointing out.

And yeah, we suck as a forum for those webheads who are posting here for the simple goal of obtaining traffic. I think a fundamental change in approach may get better traffic: start a topic with the information (and no, not all of it... tease it, if you will)... get the conversation and interest going. Then add the links to wherever to enhance the discussion. It's more fruitful for everyone, although it takes slightly more commitment from the guy looking for traffic for his web site. But you know, this makes sense... earn the click and rewards are there.

...otherwise it's essentially meatless spam, and that's saying something.... spam is fake meat to begin with!

    And now hell awaitith, sigh.

Nah, no hell here, Peter! But since you finally managed to surface, what DO you think of Abbey Road??

I heard that the long (four hour!) version of the film was actually really funny. But we'll see what the final version is like; things like this tend to get watered down when cut down for theatrical release. Undoubtedly there will be a lot of extras on home video, like most Judd Apatow-related films.

See, that's the thing: I can watch John C. Reilly for four hours and come away with a joyous experience (and I subsequently loved the Apatow-produced Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story with Reilly) but I find it hard to tolerate Will Ferrell for even four minutes these days. Both Semi-Pro and Blades of Glory were two of the worst comedies of recent times, IMO. But, then again, with Reilly by his side, Ferrell might have someone with good comic timing to play off of. I guess we'll have to see.

I don't mind Will Ferrell at all, but I love John C. Reilly. I think that guy is one of the best actors out there. To be able to do comedy as well as he does, and also be able to be as emotional as he can be, it's freaken great. He was one of my favorite parts of Magnolia. See what I did there? I mentioned another movie Jon Brion did! But yeah, fantastic actor and I always look forward to his next projects.

As for Walk Hard, I actually would buy a CD if John C. Reilly would put one out. Fantastic singer. As funny as the songs are in Walk Hard, they're incredibly well done.

I read a draft of this when I interned as a reader last summer. There wasn't much to talk about in terms of plot, but it had truly laugh-out-loud moments when Ferrell and Reilly would go into their random tirades against each other. Favorite line from that script: "When I was in second grade I took the gerbil home and it had babies." I hope that made the cut. I just about died when I read that.

Also, the news that Jon Brion is scoring is a pleasant surprise. He just may bring the movie up to a whole new level. I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Right on the money. After I've viewed the film multiple times (I'd be ashamed to say how many) those songs stuck with me and I'd catch myself singing and/or humming "Walk Hard", "Let's Duet", and "Black Sheep" constanly while I droned about work. I've also let some co-workers borrow it and they've had nothing but praise. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a future cult classic on our hands!
