LOS ANGELES - Hollywood special-effects maestro Stan Winston has died at age 62.

The Oscar-winning visual effects artist died at his home Sunday evening surrounded by family after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio.

Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986's "Aliens, "1992's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and 1993's "Jurassic Park."

Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.

His work will live in the VFX he crafted so masterfully. A true master of his craft he brought the world of imagination to life with the directors he worked with.

And for me personally, in 1993, made me want to work in films even more when he and Dennis Muren brought dinosaurs to life and made us believe that they really did walk the Earth again.

This is a huge hit to the film industry. He will be missed. And with the CG crap they put out now..his craft is also dying slowly as well. It's just too bad.

Absolutely... His effects on Jurrassic Park (and obviously all the other movies he's worked on) are practically flawless. He will be missed in more ways than one...

How sad. People sometimes say JP has the best CGI effects of any movie to date. I don't agree with that - technology has advanced a lot since then - but it makes exceptional use of them by not showing too much, and more importantly by combining them with "traditional" effects. In some pure CGI shots, the early problems of the technology are still quite obvious, but it's the outstanding combination with the animatronics that really sell the movie (and made it popupar as a "CGI movie").

It looks like Harryhausen is gradually surviving his successive generation...

    Totally agree!

The animatronics add the weight which is lacking in CGI, when that T-Rex foot slams down in all that mud you can feel that weight. Now, a film like this would be over-done in CGI.

    Oh, and Hi Marian

I agree. My favorite scenes are with the T-Rex. As you said, the CG stuff is pretty easy to spot but the combination of the animatronics and sound design for the T-Rex scene is just practically flawless IMO.
