Am I the first person to get the CD of this? I can't believe it if I am.
I'm currently 3/4 way through the soundtrack and have to say it is vintage Williams. There is a wealth of material here, enough for three films let alone one. Its too much to take in on one hearing but my first impression is....stunning. I think this soundtrack is destined to become another Williams "classic". The soundtrack is a nice balance of both old and new themes/leitmotivs. We hear a return of Marion's theme as in "Raiders" for the march and there are a couple of quotes from the "Ark" and "Nazis" theme but blended in with new material. The most obvious new theme is the one for the Crystal Skull itself which appears throughout the score in various guises. It starts of very simply...a three note repeating motif made up of ascendings diminished 5ths, which takes on a more complex shape and turns into a tortuously operatic rendition of a six note motif that appears and develops further in "Call of the Crystal". There is a new chromatic-type theme for Irina which at first appears seductively on the Saxophone and later strings. Quite often this merges in with the "Crystal Skull" theme and the two become deeply intertwined as the music develops. There are some great up tempo chase cues similar to "The Basket Chase" and "Indy's Very First Adventure" from earlier films e.g. in the track "The Adventures of Mutt" and there is also plenty of creepy dissonant music thrown in for good measure nearer the end of the CD. I liked the muted trumpet effect on "Ants" which harkens back to Herrmann and Goldsmith's "insect music" from "Mysterious Island" and "The Swarm".
"The Finale" is a nice mix of both old and new themes with the "Raiders March" appearing in a slightly updated arrangement. Overall, Williams and Film Music fans will not be disappointed. It's just finished playing and I'm going to have another listen.

Just saw the film, LOVED IT. I loved the homage to previous films and cherished characters, that was cool as heck and the music was incrdible. I'm not normally into complete scores, but this is one, I would like to have. The humor was just brilliant, so many funny lines and the three of them Mutt, Marion and Indy were a dynamite trio of stars! And we heard a few snipets of previous themes from other Indy films which I loved.

Go see it, by the way, most is old school like Steven said it was and there are a few new digital stuff thrown in. Well worth seeing for sure. I really do hope they make more and I can see why they waited so long to get just the right script.
