It took a long, long time to get into this film... it isn't until near the end of the second act that we really get to sink our teeth into it. For a variety of reasons a lot of the set-up/opening fails: pacing, too much bad comic relief, overly-long dialog, etc. Regardless, the last 30-minutes of Speed Racer deliver in spades. From the action, acting, and the editing I was impressed: the well-timed and brilliantly executed cuts/transitions back to what's at stake during the race, what makes Speed tick, are awesome and work amazingly well.

The first time Michael Giacchino actually impresses occurs during the car building sequence and also, of course, during the final race. Other than that, the score never really leaps out with anything spectacular, or memorable. However, I think with the finale pieces, the ones mentioned above, he does rise above being just beyond the mediocrity that is Brian Tyler. Hopefully, he can do the same, but this time all the way through with Star Trek. Is it just me, or does the piece that occurs when Matthew Fox (Racer X) removes his mask sound remarkably similar to his theme from Lost? I think it's cool, if that was the point.

Sean, I totally agree totally on the music, the last cues were really good stuff.

Regardless of the slow open, it really setup the character and let us into his world. It made the rest of the film better. I was impressed with how they handled it. A really good script too considering it was a PG movie.

But it was a fun movie for sure and his finale stuff really was good.

I'll give it a second pass sometime, but part of the problem too was how burnt out I was after work... The beginning, other than the villain, was still way too slow and at times a bit childish, IMO. It could have been edited, written-down to fit a more practical time-frame than what we got. Again, though, the finale was incredible.

I totally agreed with Sean about most everything he said. I wasn't planning on picking up the score, but after listening to some excerps on Itunes, I have actually changed my mind and will be picking up this cd. I really did enjoy the finale of this movie, though I think they probably could of cut somethings out of the movie and made it a little bit shorter.

I probably will not see this film until it hits my house...is the album worthy of a purchase (even a $9.99 from iTunes)?

This is by far my most listened to score this year. I absolutely love it. So if you were waiting for an answer. Mine is YES!

Supposedly the complete score was online for some time? Did I miss this? On Digital Bits, Bill Hunt was actually asking if anyone had it. Apparently it was available to download through some websites... kinda weird... Not to worry though, he actually bought the Varese CD too. If I missed this, I must've been under a rock that day or something...

Yeah, there was a stream of it a while back. I don't think the quality was that great though.

When I first listened to the stream music I thought "wow this is a big letdown, what a boring music!", but then I heard the Varése album, which got a maximum of 10/10 points from me.
This score is among the best of 2008 yet!
The package is great too, with lot of color pictures, and a note from Giacchino.
    Worth every penny!

So after picking up the soundtrack, I just want to say that I absolutely love this score!!! So much in fact, that I decided to go see the movie again, but this time I saw it in an Imax Theater, and I must say that it was so much better the second time. And again, I really really enjoyed the end of the movie, from where Speed reboots his Mach 6 to the end. The music and the visual effects are just amazing and in an Imax theater with the sound just blowing you away, it brought tears to my eyes.

I guess I'm one of the few ones that didn't like the score. I've been playing it a few times the past few days. I'm kinda disappointed. Most tracks just make me nervous. It's not one of those score that calms me down. I just don't feel relaxed when listening to it. I have to admit, though, that the score has it's moments. There's just hardly one track that's enjoyable for the whole length. For me Speed Racer falls in the same category as other Giacchino's such as Lost and Alias. Good for some parts, but ultimately disappointing. They do however fit very well to what you see on screen.
