In honor of composer Brian Tyler's Birthday, today, May 8, 2008, I thought we could look back on some of his scores and talk about them. I'll start! -Timeline-A great score and one of my favorite Tyler action scores. my favorite tracks are the main titles, battlefield revealed and troops in the fog, for starters.
I love the score he has done for: tokyo drift, timeline, avp-r, and so on...
i would love to work with him one day, he is amazing.

I like Tyler but have been noticing a lot of his action scoring is the same. Nevertheless, I continue to give him a chance, need to get my hands on Partition.

I've been listening to Rambo a lot lately, and I've come to the conclusion that I don't like it very much. There are some okay action cues, but honestly, all of the music on the disc is 2-dimensional. Lacks depth and I lose interest in rhythmic, predictable strings in a hurry. Unfortunately this has been my experience with most of Brian Tyler's work. Yet, I still continue to give him a chance with each new release.I'm hoping he wakes up one day with a new outlook on composition... but it hasn't happened yet. Even using Goldsmith's themes in Rambo wasn't enough to save him; they felt like more of a crutch, and what's even worse, is that he didn't preserve the themes. He changed the pacing on them, he tried to arrange them in a way that sounded "new" -- and it failed miserably. I was first excited when I discovered that he references "It's a Long Road" and then Jerry's Rambo theme from First Blood Part 2... but, *sigh* -- it just wasn't enough. It felt like a bastardization, at best. In fact, just hearing it puts me in a bad mood. Please believe me that I've tried to like it, oh-so-hard. I've really, really tried.
My best advice would be that if Brian Tyler wants to tap into what Goldsmith did, don't mess around with anything that the master did. Don't change a note. Really analyze it and make sure what you've got is what he had. Even in Tyler's recreation of "It's a Long Road", there were wrong notes. It's frustrating and pretty pathetic. If, after copying Goldsmith's work note for note, you still can't get it right, well... sorry guys. As much as Jerry Goldsmith may have put on the page, I think he put just as much into the music that went undocumented; personal nuance that can only be reproduced by Jerry himself. He knew what he was doing.
But hey, Brian - don't take it personally. I'm sure you're a great guy and I know you're passionate about your work. But you're no Jerry Goldsmith, and I'm sure you'd agree. Happy Birthday.
Jerry, I miss you so much.

Wow, no feeling in that there post! Very well said. I think it reflects the staid "challenge" put on composers by today's bland directors and temp scores, or did I say library music? I think a great percentage of today's films suffer this, but there are still some cool little films being made... which reminds me, I need to start watching a lot more so I can find them. That's the exhausting part...Oh. Happy Birthday BT... wait. The other BT. Yikes. I'd better get out of here...

He's got some great ones (the final track in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Star Trek: Enterprise "Regeneration", Timeline, Darkness Falls); some good ones (Frailty, Children of Dune, Terror Tract); and some bad ones (Rambo, the rest of tFatF: TD, AVP: R, Annapolis). Hmmph, sounds like every other composer, ever.Happy birthday anyway. I really enjoyed the chats we had about your "almost" rejected Rambo score. The fans saved that one for you.

I have only tFATF and War OSTs in my collection that represents Tyler's creative work, all his other works doesn't stand as a separate albums for me, but I'm waiting for more quality electronic and action score in the future, best of luck, Brian!

His score for Regeneration on "Enterprise" was above average for the show; definitely a standout among all of the other episodes, with the exception of a few episodes by Velton Ray Bunch, and also Mark McKenzie (who took a very Jerry Goldsmith approach to scoring). My Brian Tyler collection is as follows:
Alien vs. Predator: Requiem
Annapolis
Bubba Ho-Tep
Constantine (Badelt / Tyler)
Constantine (Tyler only)
Darkness Falls
Fast and the Furious, The: Tokyo Drift
Godsend
Greatest Game Ever Played, The
Rambo
Star Trek Enterprise: Canamar
Star Trek Enterprise: Regeneration
Terror Tract
Timeline
Timeline (Expanded)So, it's not as if I haven't (and still don't) give him a chance. I probably own more Bryan Tyler music that people who actually love him, oddly. That said, Tokyo Drift is probably my favorite out of everything. Timeline pales in comparison to what Jerry did.

I'm one of the few I guess who think Brian's TIMELINE is actually better than Jerry's effort. I think they both have merits, but when you melt off all the cheese (the synth ram horn, LEGEND-era electronics) from Jerry's score, you're left with a mid-light reel of recycled Goldsmith ideas.

You're not alone Ryan. Years ago, when I first got the SACD for Goldsmith's Timeline, I preferred it over the Tyler score. Now? I don't ever listen to the Goldsmith one for the reasons you cite (I was only in the beginning of my Goldsmith collecting then). At least the Tyler score gets a few listens every year from me.

Agreed. I very much enjoyed Tyler's effort over Goldsmith's.

Jeron, I figured you were drunk, on drugs or under emotional duress after being assaulted at an Arby's when you posted your TIMELINE diatribe.

Well, I did it, I got Partition and I'm really enjoying it..very melodic and refreshing from his action stuff. I know it's been compared somewhat negatively to Tyler's Children of Dune so I guess that'll be my next one. Good score, though! ****/*****posted 06-07-2008 08:30 AM PT (US)
