Funny that the main titles are in the middle of the album release.

I hope this one doesn't let me down; I've built up some mighty expectations for it.

If I'm interpreting the tiny, tiny text on Varese's pic of the back cover correctly (and I could be way off given just how tiny it is) only the tracks marked with asterisks contain material adapted from Serenada Schizophrana, which would seem to indicate that the score (or at least the portions Elfman chose for the CD) is composed of more substantially new material than previous reports have suggested. I'm very curious....

    Here's a small review:
    http://www.moviemusic.com/comments.asp?mm=standardoperatingprocedure&author=1605

I tried to find more reviews online for 10 minutes and none came up. Have review sites up and vanished? Forums don't seem to have done a good job replacing review sites, as the discussion seems to ever only be about 3 soundtracks at any given time, when there are at least a dozen new soundtracks every few weeks.

Anyone else buy or download S.O.P?

Hi Peter. I will add some comments later to your link. I've only heard half the album, but I really like this one. I'm surprised no-one - not even Ryan K - has reviewed it.

I haven't bought it yet (because I'd be one of the first to review it) but I plan on a purchase soon.

Yeah, what is Ryan doing? That misanthrope.

Saw the film today: so-so; kinda' just walked out after it was done and shrugged and went about my day (maybe this has more resonance for Americans?). The music is nice, simple but effective.

I haven't reviewed it yet because I'm simply enjoying it. To death. It also breaks my heart to love this stuff and see it more or less ignored. Case in point, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. That score knocked me out. I thought it was going give the film score world a collective chill, but no one would have noticed it, even if it were on fire in their lap!

I think STANDARD OP has remained fairly anonymous because it's the summer blockbuster season. I can't expect people to turn off ultra-classics like IRON MAN, PRINCE CASPIAN and the fan-favorite-can't-find-a-think-wrong-with-it INDIANA JONES to listen to STANDARD OP instead. Those that do, however, will be rewarded...

Maybe I should get off my ever-expanding, static-thanks-to-SAG ass and review the hell out of STANDARD OP.

Yes you should, because if there's one thing you and I agree on, it's the simple beauty of a great Elfman score.

Watched it again at work and was more impressed on the second pass, wholly impressed actually. Elfman's score was fantastic, especially the end credits... I believe it's the first cue on the CD. To deride the film as something that the American "left" will "eat it up" is ignorant; I wouldn't go down that path. Watch the movie and then comment on it, it's quite fascinating and the people interviewed are only those involved and their insight and the story behind those actual photos is illuminating. It's an even-handed representation and anyway, at this point in the game, it's very hard to swallow any "conservative" form of argument on any of this business anymore.

Just ordered this; very much looking forward to listening to it based on all the discussion I'm reading.

Haha Sean, I am NOT going any further down that path; but you're right, I should reserve judgment until actually seeing the film... my hopes just aren't that high.

That path is steep and treacherous LOL. Regardless, get the score, it's a very good listen.

I'm keen to see the film. It's a strangely topical subject for the director of THE FOG OF WAR and FAST CHEAP AND OUT OF CONTROL (Morris usually makes things people don't talk about topical). It will be on at the Sydney Film Festival next week.

Did you see his Academy Awards acceptance speech for The Fog Of War? Oh, brother.

Amazon shipped faster than a mofo. Ordered it yesterday and it arrived today. Craziness. SOP Theme sounds like Elfman meets Glass! Good stuff, though. I can tell this is gonna be a good album already.

Yeah, Morris said something along the lines of: "I want to thank the Academy for finally noticing my movies and giving me this award!" That spells grade-A dick-head to me.

He was probably sick of losing the Oscar to conventionally-made documentaries about children saved from the jaws of the Holocaust. Mind you, if the Oscars are beneath him, it's possibly also beneath him to have been eager to get one.

I suppose he could do the Scorsese grateful act of 'Let's not mention the fact that you're awarding me for the second most blatantly commercial project of my career, and one of the least honest.'

Either way, I was not impressed. The Coens were great this year: They obviously didn't care for the awards.
