Here's something I'm curious about... in a year where most scores have been offering up the usual temp track jobs, what cue is the one that took you by surprise? That one piece that really made your ears perk up.

For me, it's "The Seduction" from Beowulf. The action music was fairly typical for Silvestri yet sparsely and effectively done, and I liked the recurring Hero Comes Home theme, but "The Seduction" really came out of nowhere for me. A lot of words come to mind in trying to describe it: simple yet subtle, streamlined yet unique, menacing yet beautiful. It's not a powerhouse action cue, but there's definitely something powerful about it. The orchestration is definitely the work of a master with the echoing acoustic guitar. Everything about that cue seems just right. I'd love to hear Silvestri in this mode more often, as long as the material would allow it.

    Hey, maybe he'll re-use "The Seduction" in G.I. Joe . . .

I like this topic, give me a little time and I could think of mine.

Word is that it'll be used as the theme for General Hawk.

Al, definitely agree with ya. Beowulf on the whole is a score no one has bothered to talk about, and I think that's sad, because it was really quite good and worthy of conversation.

    Good idea for a thread...

Some cues that spring to mind:

    Fireworks (Harry Potter 5)
Because I never thought electric guitars would fit a HP scene so brilliantly.

    God's Theme (Evan Almighty)
Because I didn't expect such a classy, unique track from a run-of-the-mill comedy.

I Don't Think Now Is The Best Time (POTC3)
    Because of the arpeggio

For me the most surprising cue of 2007 was the end credits cue for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

My reaction at the time: 'What?! There's MUSIC in this film?!'

Ha! Yeah, I was surprised at that too. And oh how delighted I was to hear Burwell back in his Blair Witch 2 mode.

For me it was "Wolsey Commits Suicide / Finale" from THE TUDORS by Trevor Morris. "The Seduction" from BEOWULF is definitely among the best.

Bible Study by Marco Beltrami from 3:10 To Yuma. I wasn't expecting something like this from Beltrami. I love his work but this track was so unique in its sound design that I absolutely love it.

Possession by Nicholas Hooper from Harry Potter 5. Who knew music so close to Thomas Newman's score to Cinderella Man would fit in a Harry Potter movie)

Legends by Mychael Danna from Surf's Up just because even though it's used in the trailer, I wasn't expecting music like this in the movie.

Song For Bob by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis from The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I knew I loved the trailer music, but this track is excelent and it makes me want to watch the last 5 minutes of the movie every time I hear it.

Word Clayton, I just bought this score yesterday. While I'm upset that some of the wonderful music here didn't make it to the film, I'm glad to hear it here. This cue is certainly one of the best, and I agree 100% on your feelings.

I'm also excited to see your love for Beltrami!

Another of my favorite tracks is "A Game of Cricket" (Track 5 on Becoming Jane).
