Hey, folks-
Chris Coleman over at Tracksounds has put a lot of effort into getting this set of Soundtrack specific "awards" put forth, and there's now an opportunity for everyone to vote for some notable scores from 2007. As a bonus, there's a chance to win some prizes from iTunes and Amazon for those who participate.

Please take a few seconds and check it out--
Tracksounds Cue Awards 2007

Huh?!
Who could make a sensible choice from those nominations?

'Best Surprise of the Year'
Well certainly THE LAST LEGION, LAIR and STARDUST surprised me. LEGION was, on balance, even more annoying than ERAGON, which was surprising. STARDUST and LAIR were both very enjoyable, but included some very audacious temp track lifts, and it was surprising to see how much it didn't matter in the case of LAIR, but how much it did in the case of STARDUST.

'Biggest Disappointment'
Excuse me, so TWO Desplat scores are competing for this dishonour? That just makes no sense.

'Best Score Missed by Oscar'
THE GREAT DEBATERS? AMAZING GRACE? ORDER OF THE PHOENIX?! ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE?!
Who comes up with this?

'Label of the Year'
Clearly releasing ALIEN, WIND AND THE LION, Alex North's 2001, MONSIGNOR, SPELLBOUND and many many more did nothing for Intrada's chances. What exactly did Sony Classical release in the soundtrack realm last year that came close to rivalling that?

'Best Score to a Dramatic Film'
Order of the Phoenix is a drama?

'Disappearing Composer'
Trevor Rabin is disappearing? Can we go negative on that one?

'Breakout Composer'
Why Mark McKenzie this year? Did THE LAST SIN EATER or THE ULTIMATE GIFT really bring in the crowds?

Suffice to say, it's often hard to think up a list of nominees that could be less interesting than Oscar or BAFTA, but with umpteen categories, the CUE AWARDS achieved this rare feat.

I hope it's all just in fun... because who would really want to listen to 5000 score cues this year to come up with 5 to vote on? Ok, that's what I thought!

Although I bet if we narrowed the whole thing down to one category here in this thread and had a discussion on it, it would be more rewarding.

The best theme of the year. Let's discuss just the best damned overall theme of the year. There can be a lot of meat on this bone... just hope there's lots of carnivores around!

So, what was the best theme of 2007?

'Briony's Theme'?

'Wong Chia Chi's Theme'? Or 'Dinner Waltz'?

The 'love theme' from the last PIRATES score?

'Toschi's Theme'?

They're all top themes, I reckon.

Not unless 2007 runs until May of this year.

Is Franzie the only one who listened to film music this year?

Besides the ones already mentioned:

Now that I think about it... there was a quaint but awesome little theme in Year of the Dog. I don't know if admitting this affects how uncool I am.

Something about Rescue Dawn too that I recall. There's also the hijacked Korean anthem in D-War that made for a good theme...

What about all those Varese Sarabande score CDs from 2007? There's something brewing in a few of them, too.

Didn't the guy complaining about these choices vote in the equally head-scratching 100 category IFMC Awards?

Decepticons and Optimus from Transformers are pretty memorable for me. Plus I agree with the Love Theme from Pirates 3. And also 'Up Is Down'. But that's litterally all I can think of. Unless Smokin' Aces' "Dead Reckoning" counts, cuz that gets stuck in my head a lot. But it's very simple and very much taken from Requiem For A Dream. Was The Fountain released in 2007?

Come on Ryan, we know it must strike to your very core to see a Danny Elfman listed among the DISAPPOINTMENTS of the YEAR.

Btw, I'm pretty sure Christopher Coleman voted in the IFMCA too. Goes to show, one voice can get lost among 40.

I gotta go with Pirates 3. There was a lot of good tracks on that one IMO, but it seems so long ago, well, I guess it was over 6 months?

The reviewers on the site make nominations. Those choices, are whittled down to five. Guess you can't please everyone, but it's some manner of keeping the discussion and enjoyment active. The idea is really to reach out to new listeners as well, so there are a lot of general "public appeal" nominations.

Clayton, Fountain=2006

I was just shown this best/worst of:
http://www.americanmusicpreservation.com/best2007.htm

Yeah, it is the worst of 2007 yet! I do a whole lot of inner complaining when I see threads about "what's your favorite online soundtrack store?" and don't see the MM store ever mentioned, but this is small nuts compared to this newest best of 2007 list that completely IGNORES Intrada records and Doug Fake under "Best Label/Producer" category.

Look at it again:
http://www.americanmusicpreservation.com/best2007.htm

No Intrada. Whatever.

These best of lists are becoming more and more mediocre every year. No good.

Maybe we need to start our own awards, given out to the people who make these internet awards and best of lists.

I say we call them the Whogivesacrapsies.

And just so you know, I try to pimp MovieMusic's store at every opportunity. SAE's service is great, but I'll take great service and $1 shipping over great service and a piece of cardboard or a magnet almost every time.

Missing Intrada on that list is strange, especially given how many of their releases appear elsewhere on Roger and Steven's lists. Probably an accidental omission.

The 'Best Labels' list at Tracksounds seems even more boneheaded somehow. Given the labels listed and my prior experience running a review website, I'm tempted to think the uncharitable thought that the category should be renamed 'Labels most likely to send out review Cds'.

$1 international shipping would be nice. We would buy buy buy. Oh wait, we already buy buy buy.

I couldn't remember any, obviously. I was much more thrilled with reissues than new scores in 2007.

Granted, we got some fine re-issues last year; but, honestly, it sounds like you didn't even bother with new stuff.

Well, it's more that I just don't really remember what year stuff was released in and the stuff that I did see was not very memorable. i thought Pirates 3 was great. (but never actually saw the film I didn't know it was 07. I liked Da Vinci Code too...was that 07? Was that 06? I dont remember. Was Eragon 07? I didnt like that one that much. Harry potter 5? Wasnt a big fan. Was Ghost Rider in 2007? I know I bought that from Peter but I foudn it largely unmemorable as well.

I really liked the Eddie Vedder stuff in INTO THE WILD, but I dont even remember the score.

I don't know that i saw too many films in 07. I liked Transformers well enough, but it was rehash of a billion prior Rabin and Zimmer scores, and thats fine with me, but it was the first time where I watched a movie and really noticed the temp track---when I heard the Batman Begins motif I started thinking about Batman instead of just focusing on the film at hand. I liked Tyler's AVP:R well enough (score), but thats not really the kind of score I go back to often.

I'm very excited for Indy 4, and as far as I'm concerned this is the first score I have been looking forward to this much since REVENGE OF THE SITH.

I had a friend send me some newer scores--golden compass, magorium emporium, but they just didn't do much for me. I'm personally more into bombastic brass and percussion than the serene woodwinds and strings that desplat seems to be all about. Sure, I like some mellower stuff like LONESOME DOVE but the bulk of my collection is bombast and I'm just not hearing that in scores these days, it may have bombast, but not much melody or thematic development. If you have any suggestions that fit this criteria, by all means!

I have a score from 2007 that I thought actually stood out. The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Just got it in the mail (and watched the blu-ray... stupid HD DVD port... but that's beside the point). I thought tracks 1, 3, 7 & 14 are really great.
