Fans of David Arnold surely recognize the name of the composer of this spectacular swashbuckler score – Nicholas Dodd has orchestrated and conducted all of Arnold’s famous scores, including Stargate, Independence Day and all the four latest James Bond scores. The huge orchestral score Dodd has composed for the French-British adventure movie, Treasured Island (L’Île aux trésors), is only his second as a solo composer, following the acclaimed Renaissance which came out in 2006. This is an amazing roller-coaster ride of a score, filled with exciting action writing, grandiose themes (we’ve been humming the main theme ever since we heard it for the first time, and there is also a wonderful Barry-esque love theme in the score) and an abundance of big and complex orchestrations. Performed with great stamina and enthusiasm by London's Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of the composer, Treasured Island is the type of swashbuckling symphonic score that got many fans of film music attracted to the genre in the first place!

I see from the link to the Upcoming Releases, that MovieScoreMedia is doing KLIMT.I have to say, the score to that film was the only good thing about it.

Wow! Well I'm glad I placed my order. A run of 500 is pretty tight, but I'm sure everyone that wants one will get one if they take the initiative. Looking forward to listening to this in its entirety. I've always wanted to get a better handle on where Nicholas Dodd ends, and where David Arnold begins. This album will be quite telling in that respect, seeing as it's 100% the Doddster.

Jeron you may be a tad disappointed in trying to tell them apart, either that or you're going to wonder who eaxctly writes Arnold's music.

Dodd orchestrated Joel Goldsmith's scores for Kull the Conquerer and Stargate: Atlantis, both of which, well, have that "Arnold" sound --- but I suppose it should be called the "Nicholas Dodd" sound. It's a clear example of how powerful an orchestrator's creative influence can be. I think in the case of David Arnold, well, David's music actually lends itself quite well to what Nicholas Dodd does. Their collaboration, in my mind, is a "match made in heaven." Arnold's strengths come in the form of melody and structure; also in how he approaches a scene or action sequence w/ music versus how another composer might. Arnold's personality comes through in these ways and is evident in his creative choices.
In listening to the clips of Treasured Island, I totally expect to hear that "Nicholas Dodd" sound, but what will be even more interesting is observing the other part of this man's musical creativity, something we don't hear very often, due to his role as an orchestrator and the fact he's primarily taking what David Arnold writes, and then re-expressing it on the page for the orchestra. I don't expect to hear David Arnold's melodic sensibilities in this, though I do feel they have lived long enough with each other to rub off on one another in quite a few ways.

Only 500 copies, Stargate. Super super limited run, which is why I didn't hesitate to press "Buy Now" as soon as I saw how many were being pressed. Movie Score Media is selling the digital album at 320kbps off of their site, as mentioned above. E-mail around and see if any of the retailers have extra copies, if they do, they won't be listed on the site. Aside from that, kinda sucks... Brian (Crono/Kyp) wanted a copy as well, but you know what the say... a day late and a dollar short...Jeron

Jeron,If you're interested in hearing more of Dodd on his own,you should check out his score for the film "Renaissance". It definately has more than a few of those Dodd/Arnold moments. One cue in particular would totally be at home in one of the Bond films.

Yo Matt! Long time no talk.
Cool about Renaissance. Is there an actual album available? How easily attainable is it?posted 01-27-2008 02:03 PM PT (US)

Hey Jeron,Yeah there is an actual album...an import. But it's not readily available anymore from what I tell. From what I understand, the album is not the best representation of the score itself, but I haven't seen the film so I don't know what it's missing. Let me know if you're interested in getting your hands on it.

No problems.... what do you guys think of this album? I find it pretty interesting that a couple of scores featuring a similar theme with Nicholas Dodd all over them are available within weeks of each other. Wanna guess the other one I am thinking of?
