also want to spare all of you kind folks, so we have decided to reveal this info:It is what you think it is. The composer has a birthday next month. (The composer is living.) The franchise that the box set represents has a big birthday next month. (The franchise is living...for the most part.) My coproducer on this project is Mike Matessino. Read between the lines, OK? 8CDs, 160 pp. book, $119.95.
There will be a first pressing of 3,000 box sets so we certainly want to sell as many asap as we can, but there is little likelihood of it selling out instantaneously.
Please, hang in there, and thanks.

Everyone is speculating a Superman box set. It would make sense.

There might be. They might ... though unlikely they'll probably throw in a complete Superman Returns score too. Grant it's not golden age but it's part of the Superman franchise and the original themes were by Williams.

What rules this out from being Indiana Jones?Because that would fit most of those hints as well.

The first Superman comic was June 1938.Hmmm....no sure what birthday the franchise has next month but William's birthday is February 8.

If it's indeed Superman, I would say this is the best release in years for me. Even better than the LotR Complete Recordings maybe.
I would simply love it.I mean, complete LotR scores were more or less a given, but I didn't expect the three sequel scores to Superman have a decent release ... well, ever.

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=47252&forumID=1&archive=0&pageID=18&r=733More from Matessino:

Since Lukas indicated my role in this project I'd like to chime in with a couple of things. While I am not particularly pleased with how the announcement process has unfolded (the unfortunate disclosure of the box color was one thing, but aggravated by production delays that dragged us into 2008), none of this has changed the quality of the final package and how pleased we are with it.
I regret that it's going still be several weeks until the rest of you have it in hand, and within that time I hope that anticipation remains at the appropriate level (in other words I hope it doesn't either die down or go off into the twilight zone). Expectation, however, is a different matter. Simply put, my recommendation is that no one make an assessment of any potential music contained in this set based on anything previously available. To use a cliche, "forget all you know or think you know." Please wait for the official announcement and listen to the audio samples. There will be many surprises, delights, and revelations in this set, and along with them will be a book that takes score documentation to a whole new level. Certainly no collection of this composer's music should be without this set, but in my opinion it belongs in any soundtrack collection. I look forward to finally being able to share it with all of you.
Thanks for your patience and good humor in the mean time. To quote another Richard Donner film: "It's all for you!"

It's most likely a Superman box set. We just have to wait and see until next month I guess.

Yeah I know, speculation is often a waste of time---but it happens. I just can't imagine wanting to listen to 8 straight discs of SUPERMAN, as iconic and classic and wonderful to listen to it is.
I will want this set---but probably ask for it as a gift as it's just way out of my price range, and would set me back to much on other things I want to get before they sell out etc.posted 01-23-2008 01:51 PM PT (US)

SupermanSuperman II
Superman III
Superman IV
That can fill up 8 discs. It's pretty obvious it will be music from all 4 films.

I don't quite understand the people who decided to not buy this thing based on the scores in the films, even though MM said that what was previously available isn't even close to doing the work of those composers justice. If they don't have the money, well, that's perfectly fine, but otherwise it's like completely dismissing Christopher Young's Spider-Man 3 based on the 50 % that appeared in the film.

Like JW recorded a score for Superman II before Donner was fired and replaced with Lester? It would have to be something as drastic as that to convince a lot of people, I'm guessing. Then again. Matessino isn't one to overhype a product. I'll wait and see---and most likely ask for it as a birthday gift---hopefully it will last that long.

Unless I don't know how to read between the lines... or even on the lines... it doesn't appear this would be a limited edition. "The first pressing will be 3,000 copies" should insinuate something. It would be a real shame for everyone involved if the amount of work involved in making this box were to come and go in a few months because it's limited. Kudos to Intrada for not selling short their Alien release and making it a regular release.

Actually, Lukas said that the initial run would be 3000 depending on how fast that sold would determine whether he ordered more so I suspect that if demand is high then we will see further pressings.

Thanks Michael. And what then did he suggest was the criteria to determine demand? If 3000 boxes are sold in 6 months, that's good demand.... but maybe demand is being hoped for in something unrealistic like 4 weeks, which would be sad!

The other point is, at least with this info, we're glad the 3,000 number isn't a finite limitation set in stone due to licensing, a factor which several other CDs, FSMs and others, have suffered from. So, literally, it's not a limited edition. That's good.

Lukas also hinted at perhaps re-packaging them differently after the first 3000. My guess is that they would be sold individually.I wonder if they found some more alternate material for Superman, plus didn't Mike Mattesino mention on one of the Superman movie websites that Williams wrote some traditonal 50's rock tunes to play as source cues. He wasn't able to include them on the Rhino set.
If there were some more bonus/alternate cues found I could see Superman with 3 discs, Superman II - 1 disc, Superman III - 2 discs and Superman IV - 2 discs.
If my memory is correct Superman IV was originally over 2 hours and Courage was supposed to have scored that version.
Maybe one of the discs is the original 2 LP presentation of Superman.
We'll find out next month.

I read on FSM that the 8th disc could be a DVD of Donner's Superman II re-cut with new score. I don't know whether that's just speculation or whether it's based on facts, though.

Your not going to until ScreenArchives announces it. I highly doubt it will be at Amazon at all unless SAE, MM etc sells it through the amazon marketplace, but I doubt that will happen since amazon takes a fairly large chunk.
