Everyone who has ordered a copy of this box via MovieMusic.com will get their box. Please be confident this will happen. I am hearing the word is spreading that MM isn't getting any copies and the whole box set is sold out. This is false, and very frustrating. One more chapter in the continuous fumbling.

I appreciate all the words of support many of you have sent in by email. Thank you.

Good to hear. Hope there isn't anything snarky going on. I absolutely do not need to make alternate provisions for another copy?

I find it hard to believe this would sell out before the Bernstein box, but then again, this market is rather unpredictable.

I just want to clarify, in case I was misunderstood: I was in no way suggesting that the Blue Box had been sold out. I was merely postulating that it might have. To the best of my knowledge, it has not, but it was a bit dodgy as to whether I'd be able to get a copy at the time.

I tried to order it here, but by that point I couldn't anymore. I just had to gut it out and wait for each page to download at ten minutes apiece.

I find it hard to believe this would sell out before the Bernstein box, but then again, this market is rather unpredictable.

Well, it's a matter of cross-appeal. The only audience for the Bernstein set would be... well... us. There are a lot of film music fans who would want this... and a whole lot of comic book fans too.

All this talk of Superman has me giving this box a second look...

Too much to get!!! They just put out the new Godzilla box set as well across the pond. Either way, this looks like an amazing set and will probably be the gold standard in soundtrack releases for quite some time.

    Hmmm

[b]Why, pray tell, should I fork out 120 crisp dollars for this set?

    a) I admit to never hearing a single note from any of the scores of Superman 2-4.
    b) I only recently got the Rhino set, after having the original 1CD release. I love them, and was very glad I got the 2CD upgrade.
    c) From the above description, the scores to 2 and 3 seem to be 'variations on a theme', by composers whom I am not (Thorne) or barely (Courage) familiar with.
    d) There's also the animated series guy, whom I have never heard of.

    On the other hand:
    The boxset looks great
There are new Williams themes in 4
The sound quality is apparently excellent (was the Rhino that bad?)

    Your advice, kind sirs?

Camillu, I have no idea why you should buy this set. I'm not much help because I'm in the same situation as you with no exposure to the scores in this box beyond the first film. I have the Rhino 2CD and honestly, it collects dust a lot of the time. Spending $120 for a better sounding copy of that score, plus a few more scores I care nothing about isn't exactly making me whip out my credit card.

Mark, okay - I'll bite (you can ignore Jonathan's post above). John Williams' Superman is one of his hallmark achievements. The music, in my opinion, is something I go back to and enjoy even more frequently than Star Wars. “The Superman March” is one of the most patriotic, heroic, memorable themes ever written for screen, period, and the rest of the music follows suit. I've always been in love with the love theme, "Can You Read My Mind," and “March of the Villains” is wonderfully quirky and menacing. I'm particularly excited to hear all the variations and nuance references to these themes and all the others across 10 years and 4 films of tremendous music by 3 composers.

I've always regarded Ken Thorne's scores for Superman II and III as huge compliments to Williams' original work; it's great to see them finally get some reverential treatment here. It truly is work worth owning and enjoying, and listening to Superman II and III makes going back to the original score an even more rewarding and eye-opening experience. And do I have to say anything about Alexander Courage? Composer of the original, legendary Star Trek theme? Master Orchestrator and Arranger? Maestro Goldsmith's most utilized? People have been feigning for the music of Superman IV as a holy grail to their collections for over 20 years now. While Thorne honored Williams' music and attempted to impose his creativity in a transparent, gentle, but dramatic and effective way, Alexander Courage stepped in and breathed a breathe of fresh vibrancy into the music of the property, not only honoring Williams' original work, but expanding upon it and rendering it in new ways that only a Master can do.

As Frank V said, Superman IV is the real gem of the set; don't let this mislead you though, as the other 3 films contain a lot of great music, stuff that should belong on the shelves of anyone that deems themselves a film music fan. It's not a matter of liking Superman. This is simply great music, and if you're not getting excited about this, you are broken inside, or you are truly missing out and need to take the leap of faith. Mark, I pre-ordered this set and I simply can not wait to receive it. It's going to be amazing. I whole-heartedly recommend you pick it up as well. At the end of the day, this box set highlights what should probably be considered the "Captain Blood" or "Sea Hawk" of our generation. They are high-adventure sci-fi scores with bold, epic, and monumental themes, big, complicated action cues, and soaring, sweeping melodies. Who here doesn't enjoy that stuff? It's a tad expensive, but if you can absorb the cost without flinching too much, you won't regret owning it. It's the equivalent of buying 8 other soundtracks for $15 a piece. You're going to do that this year anyway, and there's a high probability that those scores won't stand the test of time. That is to say, not buying this set is actually a waste of money. Allow the Man of Steel to save you from misappropriating your hard earned soundtrack monies.

If anyone is hesitating on adding this set to your collection, just know that at some point in your life, you will tap into the greatness of this music, but all that will be available for your enjoyment will be OOP copies of Superman Returns in the used bin, the watered down, wholly uninspired Superman: Doomsday, disregarded copies of the original Rhino set (better than nothing) and of course I'm sure you could turn to friends for CD-R copies of this set. But, nothing will compare to the joy and satisfaction of knowing that you participated in a major film music event, and now own a piece of film music history that is the definitive Superman I-IV.

Go big or go home. Get real or get lost. This is your chance.

So, my concern about the limited availability of the set wasn't *wholly* unfounded, was it?

But as long as Peter says it's fine, it's fine.

In the latest 'newsletter', our friends at BuySoundtrax seemed to have found it in their interest to tack on an extra $10 to the retail price.

And people will probably fall for it to. sad.

Sunday I'm running my first ever half-marathon, which I have been preparing for since 1st October, often at inhumane hours of the morning. I've decided that if I complete it in a respectable time (1 hr 45ish), I'll treat myself to this boxset to end all boxsets.

Thanks guys. I can only do a couple of those kinds of posts a year.

Good luck on the marathon, Mark. That's awesome. Do well so you can partake.

I ordered the box too, with the costs of the postage, I'll pay approx 170 dollars for it.
I've just watched the first film, and the isolated score has indeed better quality than the rhino 2cd set, which i also own.
The box set will be worthy, a real gem in my collection

Loved every minute! Was very hot and sunny throughout, which made for great scenery but didn't help the running much. Still I managed to complete the 13 Miles in 1 hr 49 mins....

Now off to order my reward!

Awesome bud, congrats on your run. That's some hardcore stamina. Glad to hear you are getting the Blue Box, I think you're gonna really dig it.

I too wait for the box, but being in Hungary, Europe I think I'll have to wait 'till the end of March.
Until then, I listen to my rhino set, and the short albums for Superman 2-3.

Seriously, the Rhino 2-disc is great; is Thorne's contribution really worth all of this?

The Rhino presentation of Superman: The Movie is good but the sound quality is less than desirable. If you compared the Rhino set to cues from the 2000 DVD Isolated score then you would be able to tell how good the score for Superman can be.

Since FSM worked from the original session tapes it will sound better than ever before.

In my opinion it is worth the $120 price tag but a lot of people are satisfied with the Rhino set, I for one am not. As I said I've been wanting a remastered version of the score ever since I heard the cues from the 2000 DVD version.

I am sure if you pass this up you might later down the road regret it and end up kicking yourself in the ass for it, especially when it appears on ebay months down the road for a much greater price.

I also think the sound quality of the Rhino release is poor. I also am annoyed by the fact that they put bonus and alternate stuff right in the middle of the score.
The FSM release corrects these problems.

Thorne's score is mostly a variation on Williams stuff, but still stuff I'd like to have. Such as when he's in bed with Lois, and when he returns to the Fotress to beg for his powers to be returned to him.

I don't remember too much of Part 3, so this will be interesting.

Superman 4 I'm totally looking forward too, I love that Nuclear Man theme!

I sgree with you Tim about the alternates being in the middle of the score it is annoying indeed. I'd always prefer alternates at the end of the score, having them during the score really disrupts things big time.

Well, I guess I should say a few words, although I am late to the game, but in the overused and old saying, better late than never. Firstly,I wanna thank Jeron for bringing this to my attention, cause as busy as I have been I had no idea about this. Well, for me this box set is an event, and event long overdue much anticipated. I am in a very peculiar place these days, back in school, working and making little to no money. It gets tough sometimes, but God has been substaining me. But rest assured, that as soon as my next check comes, I will order this set, because this is the type of music I grew up with. Without John Williams and his many scores, many of the joys that accompany my life would be non-existend. Without John, I would not be here on this site, without him I would not know Jeron, Peter and the rest of you fine people. This set is such an important event for me that it extends beyond material possession and advances to the very real and deep essence of my soul. Overdramatic, perhaps, but I don't care, that how I feel and that's what it means to me. Sure, you might have the Rhino release and it might be collecting dust, but that is more a reflection of you and your taste then the greatness of this work. I might have to eat less for a while, but my soul is always better fed with this type of music with this avenue of art. If you wonder about the money, well, it's a good reason, but, money is not everything. I don't know about you, but some of the music we enjoy here as a community, as a people who are not afraid to voice their affection for an artform terribley under-appreciated, some of that music substains me in an odd sort of way in this crazy world. Superman is an icon. Superman is a legend. Superman is everyone's hero. But guess, what made Superman come alive in the movies were not images, were not the special effects. What made Superman come alive, for me, was and is John Williams' music. For me, purchasing this set, is like purchasing a little bit of heaven.
Enough said, I'm done, I'm out.

    Scott

    YAY.

I guess on the other hand, as the article says, it makes shopping in the US more appealing. So... spend that Euro! Spend it! Empty your pockets.
