This top-secret J.J. Abrams project is right around the corner (January 18th) and Sean and I are wondering who's composing this silly little movie. Anyone know?

Well, considering that's is supposed to a found recording ala Blair Witch, I doubt that there will be much (if any) score at all.

The trailers have no score, just some sound effects.

I say Michael Giacchino, because he did such an incredible on Mission: Impossible III that you'd believe-hands down-he was born to score Cloverfield and Star Trek! He's such an outstanding talent and destiny is calling: Andrew, let's hope he answers!

    Nice... classy.

Anyway, Michael is not involved with Cloverfield. He is currently working on Lost and Speed Racer and once they are done he will begin work on Star Trek.

There was a rumour that Giacchino had recorded a piece for the end credits, but I guess Erik has just debunked that!

It slipped my mind, Erik: Your lack of a sense of humour. Now, CHOP-CHOP, dig deep about that rumour, I want that answer yesterday.

I didn't check for spoilers, but this article confirms no composer has been attached for "Cloverfield":

    I stand corrected!

Giacchino has written an overture for the movie which plays over about 2/3 of the credits. A big Ifukube inspired marching piece. I hope someone releases it...

Yes, Giacchino recorded a 12 minute piece for the end credits with an 87-piece orchestra and vocal soloists in Bratislava. No other score is used in the film.

I'd love to see that, the music from Lifted and other animated shorts he's scored put on to one disc. GIven that Cloverfield is a Paramount property, and the shorts are Disney, that may seem closer to unlikely.

And desipte arousing the wrath of its detractors, if iTunes offered up an mp3 ep of that score track (or as a single, perhaps), I'd definitely get it that way.

Giacchino composed a terrific ending piece that will probably not be heard by most people as they left at the end. It is a great Ifukube/Gojira homage. (But I just can't remember a soprano being used by Ifukube.)
If you see this movie, stay for the music.

Absolutely! I'd actually get this track if it was released (along with the already mentioned tracks from the Pixar shorts, I really enjoyed One Man Band by the way).

Joan, Ifukube has used a female voice before, not in the main title but for Godzilla's death in Godzilla vs Destroyer.

I had no idea there was an end credits piece, but I had too much of a headache to stick around anyway. Needless to say the cinematography was a little too epileptic for me. I hope the cue will be available for download, as I don't think I could sit through this in the theater again. I can't wait until the DVD comes out, though. That way I can use the pause and slow motion features to find out just what the hell I was looking at. Actually it was a pretty fun movie, regardless.

I called Michael and he was eating dinner and he said he'd call me back. Plus, he was going over on his minutes for the month so he might use his unlimited weekend minutes to give me a shout on Saturday or Sunday (generally the weekend).

Oh, you meant Michael Giacchino?! He changed his number and I haven't been in contact with him since.

Do you think Tom Hanks will be nominated for his work in Cloverfield? I haven't seen the film, but I hope so. I heard he was the best monster . . . ever.

But seriously, Hanks losing out to Russell Crowe for best actor in that year, when Crowe won for Gladiator. That was the moment when I realized they must have not watched either movie and just decided that Tom Hanks already had one (despite that movie not being nearly as good as Cast Away) so they might as well give it to Crowe as a consolation prize. I mean, who in the world thought that Crowe was great in Gladiator? Sure, he was tolerable (and the film just barely), but he didn't work next to a volleyball (I'm referring to Helen Hunt).

They were doing it out of guilt for not rewarding Crowe for THE INSIDER a year before, and LA CONFIDENTIAL before that. And perhaps they were anticipating the guilt of not rewarding A BEAUTIFUL MIND the only award it actually deserved - an award for Russell Crowe. Or they might even have been thinking ahead to MASTER AND COMMANDER and... well, you get the point.
