The artwork printed on the CD label itself is probably one of the coolest I've every seen.
For those searching local music shops look for it under AVPR and not Alien versus Predator: Requiem. Or else you might give the store clerk a brain aneurysm.

I approached a very pretty girl working in FYE today. Very clean looking, as apposed to the goth/lesbian looking punk rockers usually in there. I asked her if they had received the soundtrack to Alien versus Predator: Requiem. She stopped what she was doing and started to think about it. She then said "Oh, I don't think that has come in yet, but we do have the other one, AVPR."

The movie looks sick. And the clips off Tyler's MySpace sound sick.

    SICK!!!

Brian, is it Brian Tyler doing Celtic? Because if it is, than I'm down with it.

I should be picking this up tomorrow. Based on the MySpace clips and Intrada's brief summary, this is going to be pretty relentless. Long album, too. Listen for bits of "Bishop's Countdown" in "Decimation Proclimation". Also caught some Predator in another part of the album.

The homages seem to be more in the vein of what Beltrami did with Die Hard 4 (whereas the score is entirely Tyler, but the past scores weave in and out in a more broad sense). The main theme has a very Goldenthal-esque flair to it, though.

    Strap in, I'd say.

From the first 5 minutes of the film (link below), I hear shades of Goldsmith's Alien, especially in the ambience, when the Predator ship crash lands on Earth I hear it ebbing towards John Frizzell's cacophany of brass from Alien Resurrection, and then as father & son run from the crash site Horner's percussive writing is definitely a factor here, think "Ripley's Rescue" and "Futile Escape," and his screeching horror motifs from Aliens come into play as the two are surrounded by Face Huggers. The Predator on his homeworld getting ready for battle definitely has shades of Silvestri's Prtedator. I'm impressed.
    http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/a/Aliens-Vs-Predator-Requiem/index-3687454.html

    The MySpace clips:

    "Decimation Proclamation" HIGHLIGHTS

01:52-02:23 -- Definitely a nod to Frizzell's swimming action music from Alien Resurrection: One of the only positives from that score.

02:23 -- Fans of Elliot Goldenthal's Alien 3 will the love brass that kicks into the relentless action music.

04:07-04:57 -- The Goldenthal sound kicks in to stay for a bit echoing his swirling minimalism in strings from "Lento," only played much faster here by Tyler and mixed in with some that kick ass "Futile Escape" music from Horner.

07:07-END -- The music goes straight into "Bishop's Countdown" until the end of the track.

What Tyler's done in using inspiration from the previous Alien/Predator scores is impressive. Other than Tyler's work on Enterprise, I hadn't really been taken by anything else he'd composed. AvP Requiem is a welcome score and from that piece alone it sounds like he's done justice to the legacy of the music he's continuing here. This can only mean good news for Rambo: Which is a much tougher challenge, IMO. His incorporation of the other sound from the previous Alien/Predator scores is a classy tip of the hat, nowhere rip-off or copying, but a respectful nod.

    "Aliens Vs. Predator Requiem"

Holst's "Mars, Bringer Of War" pounds out pretty relentlessly through this cue; very cool! You can hear the Goldenthal "Lento" shades once more, which is quite cool.

I'd say Tyler did a way better job than Beltrami ever did in tipping the hat to past scores; Andrew says to blame Len Wiseman for that.

I'm surprised no one has pointed out that the chief inspiration for the score is Randy Edelman's sci-fi classic "COME SEE THE PARADISE." You remember, it's the piece that was used in the trailer for every thriller in the 1990s.

Also, based on the first 5 minutes of the movie, they will be tracking in bits of the actual scores from the previous Alien and Predator scores. This should only serve to confuse people as to what Tyler adapted himself. So far, it seems to be working well.

I was going to comment on that, you can tell that by the way that clip is edited and by the way it ends , it is'nt the final cut. Its was just an extended trailer.
And I don't think there going to use the music in the actual film either.

I haven't heard the first two Alien scores (I'm lukewarm about Horner and especially Goldsmith), but Goldenthal's score for the third installment is ummmmm.... my 15th most played soundtrack CD ever... which should give you a good idea what I think of it!.

So, does the majority of this score tend toward the avant-garde/horror genre or the more mainstream action movie sound? If the former, I'll probably hit 'purchase' right now.

Music sounds invigorating and the previous look great. Hopefully this one does not let me down.

I was going to bite the bullet and get this one on ITUNES, but I noticed the 13-minute Taking Sides track is not included. Oh well, guess I will need to go search.

    80-minutes!!! Awesome.

Somebody mentioned Bishop's Countdown...is that a direct incorporation of Horner's music on the album?

Well, I watched that recording session video, and alas - I have blindly purchased it as my first Brian Tyler score. And to get free shipping, I conveniently added Marianelli's Atonement as well. Meesa happy as a dog with six bones today.

FYI, that makes only my 6th 2007 score purchase. The others were Bourne 3 (3/5), Pirates 3 (4/5), Harry Potter 5 (2/5), and Eastern Promises (4/5). I bought bits and pieces of Ratatouille and Lust Caution on iTunes as well - both excellent.

No, it's not a direct incorporation of it, but it's close to that: Watch the video, there's a great example of it being used in the action music.

The 5-minute clip gives me even more hope! But the directors said the cut is different than the final film. I am guessing they tracked in the old film music to attract even more fans of the films.

As long as the nods and references are strong, I will be happy.

I was wondering why that track didn't remind me of Mars the first time I listened to it. I listened again, and I can see a vague similarity, but the rhythms really don't have much in common.

See, Mars is notably in 5/4 time and has three separate groups of rhythmic figures per measure. D-d-d-DUM dum DUM-DUM-DUM...

The rhythm here is in 3/4 time and consists of Du-du-dum DUM DUM DUM... The orchestration does hearken back to Holst though.

This very rhythm can be also prominently found in Horner's "Legends of the Fall," track 4, "To the Boys" AND in another score I heard recently, but it is maddeningly escaping my mind at present.

Don't mind me... I just felt like being a nitpicker tonight.

What's I, Robot? Didn't Will Smith make a movie called I Am Robot and now he's releasing a sequel called I Am Legend? Beltrami must be pissed off that he wasn't hired for round 2!

Neo, you're talking smack. It's pretty damn obvious Tyler was using "Mars" as a crutch there, and it works... he wrote the piece in 10/4.

But how do you figure it's in 10/4?

10/4 signature occurs when Brian Tyler finishes a cue, turns to the "Brothers Strauss" (LOL! What a retarded name!) and says: "10/4!"

I used my Super Saver option too and it looks like I won't receive the score until the middle of January!

Discovered that I'm a bonehead and figured out that "Album Only" means buying the album from Itunes and not brick and mortar.

After striking out at my two local Best Buys and I broke down and settled for the instant satisfaction of Ituness.

Great listen...will need to run it through multiple times to get everything out of it.
