Compare this year with recent years... what do you think?

Some guy at the Chicago Tribune called this year a stellar year for soundtrack lovers. Here's his article.

    Comments?

Can we start blabbing about the best score of the year already?

I thought the article wasn't that interesting, given the writer's greater affinity for songs in movies, more so than score; and even then, a lot of the score round-ups are hurt by plot descriptions. (I'm sure Andrew will be pleased that Stardust is mentioned, along with all those Alexandre Frenchsplat scores.)

Let's start babbling about the best of the year. The only two that come to mind for 2007 are Hans Zimmer's Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End and Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica: Season Three. Both receiving generous airplay from me. There's a few other fun scores out there like Beltrami's 3:10 To Yuma and Powell's Bourne Ultimatum... and Zimmer's Simpsons. Other than that, it's tough; Howard Shore failed to deliver anything substantial for a standalone listen from Eastern Promises: Good in the film, boring apart from it.

    Well, I liked...

    - Zodiac (Shire)
    - The Lives of Others (Yared/Moucha)
    - Lust, Caution (Desplat)
    - The Golden Compass (Desplat)
    - Planet Earth (Fenton)
    - Atonement (Marianelli)
    - Island of Lost Souls (Cornish)
    - Ratatouille (Giacchino)
    - Angel (Rombi)
    - The Bourne Ultimatum (Powell)
    - L'Ennemi Intime (Desplat)

Some good back-ups: Lair (Debney), Moliere (Talgorn), As You Like It (Doyle), Eastern Promises (Shore), I Know Who Killed Me (McNeely), Mr Magorium (Desplat/Zigman), Sleuth (Doyle), Year of the Wolf (Kantelinen), 3:10 to Yuma (Beltrami), Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Cave/Ellis), Moving Music (Amar), The Last sin-eater (McKenzie), Medal of Honor Airborne (Giacchino), Requiem for Katrina (Blanchard), BSG 3 (McCreary), The Sun Also Rises (Hisaishi)

Also (from last year): The Good German (Newman), and Painted Veil (Desplat).

Also a great year for re-recordings (Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Sea Hawk / Devotion, Fahrenheit 451, Mysterious Island, Spellbound) and re-releases (Alien, Monsignor, North's 2001, The Last Valley, The Wind and the Lion, Les Miserables, Ann of the Indies).

Some bad ones / disappointments / very average scores: Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Harry Potter V, The Brave One, Flood, Michael Clayton, Silk, 1408, The Last Mimzy, Spiderman 3 (ie the mess it was)

It wasn't horrible. No worse than 04, 05 and 06, in my opinion.

I was sitting here thinking about CD's I got this year... The Simpsons, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and Bourne Ultimatum... That's litterally it. I also got The 'Burbs and Bad Boys though, but I wont count those... So really, this year actually did suck to me. Kinda sad that out of all the movies I saw there were only 3 CD's I got (and I haven't even seen Bourne Ultimatum, I just got the score because I have the first two).

It was a great year for re-releases, but not for new soundtracks.

Michael, you're too "generous"... On the other hand, you have no At World's End on your list: Zimmer did a better job on that score than any score/composer you've listed there.

Clayton, I'm about on par with you there with what I've purchased for 2007. 3:10 To Yuma will be the last '07 score that I'll buy.

Wait... was 1408 this year? Because I picked that up as well. However, aside from the final track it was kind of dissapointing. I remember the score being much better in the movie (probably because I was enjoying the movie). So really, that wouldn't make my list of good scores from 2007.

I'm as generous as I am. Neither too much, nor too little. I could say you let Hanzie off the hook very easily. I enjoyed that score the month it came out, but there's probably only 2-3 tracks I listen to on a regular basis since then.

Incidentally, how many of my top scores have you actually listened to? They don't seem like the sort of things you would have stepped out for in the first place.

I did add one to my list that you mentioned that I'd completely forgotten about though, so have some peace in that. :P

I found that one a tough one to rate. There's 3-4 tracks I really like, but the sound design stuff is a bit average.

Not stellar year but it didn't suck anyway. Scores I liked are in 2007 are:

    - Bee Movie (Gregson-Williams)
    - Beowulf (Silvestri)
    - Enchanted (Menken)
    - Lair (Debney)
    - Medal of Honor Airborne (Giacchino)
    - Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium (Desplat/Zigman)
    - Planet Earth (Fenton)
    - Ratatouille (Giacchino)
    - Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (Zimmer)
    - The Water Horse (Howard)

We also had some really nice complete releases for Godzilla and LotR RotK!

Michael, there's 2 or 3 on your list that I haven't listened to; I'm just not in the Howard Shore/Alexandre Frenchsplat are gods and every score they release is incredible group that you and Andrew partake in. I'm picky nowadays when it comes to actually purchasing a score, as opposed to downloading it, since it used to be that I collected scores like bottle caps: No more; I have to be taken by at least one piece for me to dish out cash for the hard copy of a score.

I can only say I'm glad I'm me and not you, because if I were you, I wouldn't be enjoying much of all that music you're downloading.

Really? Because it's all your favourite music from this year; that list of yours, my downloads are found there. I think you misunderstood me.

I mean you're downloading a lot of stuff you obviously don't seem to like much.

Yep. I don't bother downloading stuff if I don't like it. It certainly gets deleted fast if I give it a shot and I download it.

Usually I just DL stuff that gets leaked early before buying it....or if it sucks, decide not to buy it

Yeah, see, that's where you misunderstood me. I like what I download, I just wouldn't spend money on it. Hence, hard copy scores are elevated to a new level of greatness, IMO. Not only that, we get a lot of promos at work (Lust, Caution, for example) and those are free, too.

Nice try with the double team there, tjguitar.
