I watched that trailer a little while ago. It sure is a vibrant shade of awful.

Wonder how many seizures Giacchino's gonna have while scoring that thing…

If nothing else, the track titles for the score album should be hilarious.

And I think we can agree that it looks a damn sight more engaging than TRANSFORMERS. Make of that what you will.

Transformers was watchable... this... not even the trailer is watchable because it induces vommiting. It's the syrup of ipecac of the film world...

Yes. I have a different opinion here.

I don't get all the hate for the trailer. It's EXACTLY like a SPEED RACER cartoon come to life. What the hell these guys were expecting is beyond me.

For months all I heard about was TRANSFORMERS how great that was and I never got it because it was after "my time." Now I think SPEED RACER is before these guys' time and thus they don't get it.

I think I'm going out on a limb here, but it *looks* like a well done live-action cartoon. Cheesy as hell, but pretty-looking. Probably will be fun, too.

At least, that's my opinion after seeing the trailer.

Here's a reply: that in itself was an inane comment.

As for the trailer, the story side of my radar detects a big STINKER, but the illustrative side is a little pumped on the EYE CANDY scale, which is why I would assume it appeals to Lancelot too. Of course I've never seen much of Speed Racer, aside from seeing it parodied on a Geico commercial, but I thought it was pretty bold to see it capture the anime aesthetic in live action. If this bombs, at least it's going down in some pretty impressive flames.

You guys want serious discussion about this silly piece of garbage, fine. Beyond the overwhelming barrage of flashing colors, sets, flying cars, etc, this film is taking an age-old cartoon and turning it into utter waste. I don't need to see Speed Racer on the big screen. It only belongs, as a cartoon, on the late night cartoon network time slot. There's no need to bring it back to life.

So, the crazy Wacho bros are going to take one of my old favorites and inject some hyperstupidity into it. This is why it will suck, why the "10" of us already hate it, and why the inane comments are flying. No can take this seriously regardless of how pretty it looks.

I saw Transformers last month. It too was utter garbage and I can only hope Michael Bay will address my invoice for the 2+ hours wasted watching it.

Hollywood has lost creativity, so they're taking old cartoons and kid shows, and shooting them up with mindless, confusing CG action scenes along with pointless plots and shallow character development.

And that is why I hate this trailer and what is soon to become a bomb of a movie.

That's the problem, we don't need a Speed Racer movie and with the Wachowski's proven record of being derivative I'm pretty sure that movie will fall flat. Visually stimulating? You mean the jumpy edits and bad-90s CGI? It looks like a terrible videogame . . . for the Nintendo 64.

And I don't believe any of us heaped any type of praise onto Mikey Bay's Transformers. That movie is trashier than this, simply because it ruins a decent franchise. I'm not so sure that Speed Racer has the same clout it once did over 20 years ago.

I don't know anything about Speed Racer, so I'm open to liking this movie. The trailer doesn't impress me, yet it would be a pleasant surprise if the film did.

Andrew, Transformers 2007 is just as stupid as it's origins; no "decent franchise" was ruined by that movie--what we already knew was simply just reiterated to us.

I am with Sean here... But I can't imagine the movie impressing me at all. Siezures yes, impressing no... but it did remind me of N64!!! I was watching the trailer going, "man... what does this remind me of?" and then when Andrew said N64, I was like "HOLY CRAP! THAT'S IT!"

As for James, you're right. Speed Racer is before my time. The cartoons I've seen have been pretty much as bad as this teaser. So I guess it is fitting. Now if they tried to make this movie at least somewhat serious and not like the cartoon mixed with seriousness (if that makes sense) it might have a chance of me purchasing a ticket for it. But to me, in my book, it's a little behind Herbie Fully Loaded...

No. And he's going to screw up the Star Trek movie, too. Andrew, I'm waiting for a convincing argument from you as to why I should pay attention to Giacchino's music (that "complex" action music for that dumb Mission: Impossible movie he did you tell me about isn't anything if he's using the wrong notes [and that's exactly what he did... "Gee, I think I'll play that bridge attack music, wasn't that ever compelling" haha], and Lost is pure boredom also), and for that matter, Alexandre Frenchsplat too.

I actually did like the score to True Lies, as synthy as it was. I think the Bridge Attack scene actually was my favorite track on the CD. It had a great build up to the main theme if I remember right... Now that I think about it, they need to freaken release an anamorphic version of that (or better yet, on Blu-Ray).

Yeah the DVD for True Lies blows: bad transfer, ridiculous menus, and zero special features; they could do a number on this one if they tried. As for the score: It's pretty good. The Harrier sequence is the best part (film and score!), and I also quite enjoyed the action music for "Escape From The Chateau" and the opening rendition of the main theme is pretty cool, too. I wish the bathroom fight scene music was on it, though.

Absolutely he does. Never mind what Sean just posted... Michael is easily one of the best of the new crop of composers out there.

There haven't heard one bad Giacchino score. From his wonderful early film work on Semper Fi, Redemption of the Ghost and My Brother The Pig to his video game music... most notably MOH, MOH: Frontline and Secret Weapons Over Normandy to his fantastic TV work (Alias and LOST) to his oh so enjoyable recent film work (Ratatouille, Sky High, The Pixar shorts... even The Incredibles - although the Barry influence gets a tad annoying), he is the most promising of the new generation of film composers.

As for Trek and Speed Racer. I have no doubt in my mind that we are going to get two incredible and vastly different styled scores. One will feature a rousing epic adventure score while the other will be reminiscent of his work on the new Space Mountain ride... which is a hoot! I'm looking forward to hearing these two scores.

I know it was directed at you. I thought I'd chime in with my two cents on the matter since I could see a bash Giacchino party beginning.

As for Braveheart. Braveheart is ONE of my all time favorite films and is ONE of my all time favorite scores... but NOT my ALL TIME favorite film and score.

    ALL TIME!!! lol...

You know, it's probably just the Star Trek thing that I have to wrap my head around: Those scores are my favourite scores of all time (lol!), literally, and I just have not heard anything from Giacchino yet that makes me trust that he'll do Star Trek justice in the way that Goldsmith, Horner, Eidelman, etc. have done for the previous films.

Not sure what's so funny about ALL TIME...

As for Giacchino doing Star Trek justice. This guy was born to score a big sci-fi adventure film like this. If you listen to ANY of his video game work you'll hear that he knows his stuff and has a gift for melody. He also has an appreciation for everything film music and understands what he is up against. Trust me, he knows what he is doing and WILL do the Star Trek series justice. I mean, he won't write anything as bad as Insurrection or Nemesis, I can guarantee you that. Look, younger film composers have faired pretty well in the the Star Trek universe. Horner and Eidelman impressed... Giacchino WILL do the same.

Erik, do you have the complete scores to either Insurrection or Nemesis? If you did, than I don't think you'd be calling them bad. Also, Goldsmith's worst ideas are better than most, if not all, other composer's best ideas: He's the master and no one can match him, no one.

Yes I do and I think they are below average Goldsmith scores. While I LOVE the "Ba'ku Theme" from Insurrection the ripped-straight-out-of-US-Marshalls action music was irritating and paint by numbers.

Nemesis just stunk from start to finish with a so-so reaction on my part for the new Remus theme. But again, it was below standard Goldsmith writing... especially for a Star Trek film. This stuff seemed to belong in a third rate action film rather than a Star Trek film... and yes, the last two Star Trek film weren't anything special either. But after listening to the first three Goldsmith Trek scores you'd think he'd hold these films a little higher on the pedestal. I mean, Trek 5 is the WORST Trek film ever made yet just listen to that classic score Goldsmith crafted. Unfortunately, the last two Trek scores contain some of weak writing in Goldsmith's career and are two of the weakest entries in the series. I expected much more from Goldsmith.
