I just thought of this (though, Sean, I believe you and I joked about this over the phone): shouldn't Juno Reactor or Paul Oakenfold or some other outdated electronica/techno "artist" be scoring this? I mean, it's gonna suck anyway (despite the inkling of talent Giacchino has, I would never hold him in such high fashion as Erik and Demetris have here).

Yes they should. It seems weird that Giacchino would be scoring it. Or maybe get Trevor Rabin, he's scored Gone In 60 Seconds and Torque... and I think some other crap racing movie as well.

Dude, don't mess with Torque. That's my all-time favorite score.

Yeah, that's right, Andrew; I mean those two brothers already know Juno Reactor, so they could just call them up to lay down some sick beats.

Giacchino has lots of experience with electronics/techno beats and such. And the music from the opening of the trailer reminded me of Giacchino's work on the new Space Mountain Ride he worked on last year. Maybe the Wachowski Bros' heard that piece (and the other techno-stylings of Giacchino in Alias) and thought that particular sound fused with Giacchino's orchestral sensibilities might work for their new film.

Among some people around here it's standard operating procedure.

    It's actually our Modus operandi.

But can't the same be taken to its extreme at FSM. Have you seen their The Dark Knight trailer discussion thread? What a joke!

The 2nd trailer looks slightly (just slightly) better.

I agree. I wasnt too sure what to make of the first trailer (since I'm not all that familiar with the source material), but at least the new one has more footage and less "blink and you'll miss it" editing.

It took me a good 20 minutes to wade through this post, but there seems like a lot of people have written off the movie already, based on the short trailer.

I think its a tad unfair that everything the Wachoskis do now is being compared to the Matrix. They've only directed four films so far, but I've really enjoyed three of them (Revolutions hurt me so bad, I still cant talk about it!), so all I'm hoping is that Speed Racer will be a fun pop-corn movie.

I was surprised when I first heard Giacchino was attached to this. But when I took into consideration some of his older work (Alias in particular, as someone else here pointed out), I realised he might just be able to provide an appropriately thumping soundtrack to the movie that at the same time is still listenable (I would find a Rabin score, or Juno Reactor music difficult to appreciate as a listening experience outside of the movie). I'm curious to see how he'll approach this.

There are no electronics in the score whatsoever. Giacchino however IS going for that techno styled sound but will be doing it with live percussion and a gigantic symphony orchestra.

I have to admit, I'm a little relieved to hear that. On the whole, I'm not the biggest fan of the synth score (which is the route I assumed he'd take). And the most recent electronic /orchestral hybrid I'd heard (Tylers "War"), just didnt sound as great as I'd hoped. Funnily enough (considering all the discussion thats gone on this thread beforehand), Goldsmith was always a deft hand at combining the two!

But it will be interesting to see how he "synthesizes" a techno sound with traditional instruments

Just being nosey, but how did you happen across this juicey nugget of info?

Errr ... no. Transformers was bad, but it was still watchable. Speed Racer just looks utterly awful. I would rather watch Transformers again than watching this.

No problem. Michael and I are friends and we chatted about it recently.
