It's a new day and a new round. This time, Zimmer's scores go head to head in an epic battle in the great continent of Africa:CORNER 1 - Black Hawk Down
CORNER 2 - Tears of the Sun
Potential tag-team partners include Madagascar and The Prince of Egypt.
The winners take on The Lion King!
GO!

I go with BLACK HAWK DOWN. That really is a score that took an interesting ensemble, and made a film work. The main theme for strings and vocalist must be one of Zimmer's greatest achievements. Pity about the choppy music editing in the film.TEARS OF THE SUN has some good action, and some nice reflective music, but gets a bit bombastic, and the vocal stuff has also been done a bit.

You know it would seem most would choose Tears of the Sun because it seems like it is a more mature score but I choose Black Hawk Down.IMO, BHD has more interesting and original material. Tracks like Barra Barra make this a guilty pleasure. It's a harsher and more colorful score. I feel like I've seen the material in Tears of the Sun before.

Tears Of The Sun "mature," eh? Sounds loaded.Black Hawk Down for sure. "Tribal War" and "Leave No Man Behind" are my favourite pieces from the release. There's a great martial rendition of the latter theme in the film that should have made the disc, but didn't, for whatever bizarre reason.

I share all of Sean's exact comments. But I also think that Tears compliments BHD well; they're good to play together and/or mix and match cues.

Oh I can totally partake in this one... I am going with Tears of the Sun on CD compared to what was in the film... If we went by what was in the movie, I'd go with Tears of the Sun, but here's my thoughts on the CD:Track 1: A pretty good taste of what's to come. You get to hear 2 pretty good themes that'll be heard throughout the album.
Track 2: Not a very good theme. It seems to... off? It's just not very well written
Track 3: Somewhat repetative but ends up being rewarding as the track goes on, so I like it quite a bit. The end is a theme we'll hear again later on...
Track 4: Should've been replace with what actually followed track 3 in the movie. A very dramatic theme (heard at the beginning of track 9) played on a solo violin with Lisa Gerrard adding some vocals to it. It was very dramatic and touching in the film and of course, since the exact same cue repeats twice in the film, it's not on the CD (makes sense, right?)
Track 5: An alright droning and suspense cue that does a pretty good job leading us into track 6.
Track 6: This track has a lot of body to it. It features Lebo M, Lisa Gerrard, a choir and it's actually a really good theme (which is repeated from track 3)
Track 7 is about as pointless as track 4 since it's very close to track 2. It could've been replaced with something much more important from the film.
Track 8: Well this is just a rip off of Black Hawk Down in every way.
Track 9: This is the track that rocks the most. You hear a VERY dramatic cue by Steve Jablonsky to start off the track which leads into some pretty emotional action. There's heroic moments, and there's tragic moments as well. Easily my favorite cue on the CD.
Track 10: Where the crap is this theme throughout the rest of the CD? Come on now, this is such a good theme at the beginning of track 10 here (as I mentioned earlier, this is that theme that should've replaced track 4), it needed to repeat throughout the CD. Now because of the way it's presented on the CD, the theme has no meaning. It's just the way track 10 starts out... But the rest of the track is alright. It's big and thematic and features the same "Kopano" theme heard in tracks 3 and 6. I actually like the version of the theme heard in track 6 the best. But yeah...
I am sure you're wondering, why would he go through all this trouble? Well, in short I like tracks 1, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 10 from Tears of the Sun. The rest I can skip over. But for Black Hawk Down, I don't skip over any tracks. They're all very good and very listenable. Now, had they put together a more solid album for Tears of the Sun, I think I would've picked that as it has some way more emotional music than Black Hawk Down (I think pretty much all of Black Hawk Down's emotional music appeared on the album, aside from the variations of "Leave No Man Behind" heard in a couple of scenes). I think I might be over analyzing it a little. But hey, I listened to both these CD's quite a bit and I still want a freaken complete from Tears of the Sun (or else just like 3 cues that were missing).
So in short, I give this one to Black Hawk Down.

Good insight into Tears Of The Sun, Clayton. You and I discussed this ad infinity one day and both came to same conclusion about the hero's theme from that film, Where the hell is it!!?? It appears all too briefly at the beginning of the finale, but that's it. In the film there's lengthy, superior performances of it that would have occupied a healthy 4-5 minutes of playing time had it been arranged properly for release and could have easily replaced the redundant ambient tracks that poorly occupy this album. Wish I were a mover and a shaker.[Message edited by sean on 12-03-2007]

Here's what I would've done to Tears of the Sun:Track 1 - Left alone
Track 2 - Combined with the end of 7
I'd put the track from when Bruce Willis is talking to his men about the battle their about to fight and asking them to follow him. It's the theme that you hear in "The Journey".
Track 3 - Left alone
Track 4 - left off
Track 5 - Left Alone or trimmed just a bit more
Track 6 - Left Alone
Track 7 - Replace with the track that came after 3 in the movie in this spot, it would've been extremely fitting.
Track 8 - Toss up, but I would've included more action from the finale
Track 9 - Left Alone, or else included more action from the finale
Track 10 - Left alone
Really, I think the run times would've been about the same. There would've been like 1 more track that featured Lisa Gerrard and Lebo M, but I think it needed it because Lisa Gerrard's music just seems to be in 2 random spots (tracks 1 and 9, I think she only worked with Steve Jablonsky on the movie or something). Yes, I did over analyze this music, but oh well. I really liked the score in the film, and then was somewhat dissapointed with what was on the CD.
