Here's round three of the increasingly popular MovieMusic Main Events.Pirates are the theme of this one; oh, and Hans Zimmer:
Corner 1: Muppet Treasure Island
Corner 2: Pirates of the Caribben: At World's End
GO!

Pirates 3 by default cause I have not heard the other one....regardless, it's a pretty good one, my favorite of the trilogy.

AWE by a wide margin. Mostly because it suited the movie much more than the Muppet score did.

At World's End wins, by far. It's one of Hans Zimmer's best scores to date, fits the film perfectly, and is fun as hell to listen to.Muppet Treasure Island, on the other hand, has not aged well and suffers from a lot of the vices that, for me, plague much of Zimmer's earlier works: Other than the intro music, the remainder of the score is a hard swallow.

Pirates 3. I agree... one of Zimmer's best scores to date.

Very close race. Wow. Muppet Treasure Island was much earlier in his career. One thing I like about that score is that Zimmer is so original with his writing. There is a new theme around every corner, and the action never lets up. But like others have said, it hasn't aged well. Also, it is a little too childish for me at times. As for POTCIII, the music has finally gotten more orchestral. I have always disliked the POTC scores because they are too hollywood for me. They went for that generic electronic sound which made the whole series sound the same and flat. But At World's End changes this somewhat. More themes, more diverse instrumentation, more real instruments (especially the solo instruments). A downfall, though, is that Zimmer still borrowed from other scores.
Being that I have always disliked the pirates scores, it might seem like I'd pick Muppet Treasure Island because it is a very worthy score. Not the case here, I would have to choose At World's End to be the better score here just because of the maturity compared to MTI. MTI has it's many good moments but Zimmer took POTC in a new direction, a good direction.

Alright, fine - I haven't checked the forum in a few days; have been distracted by the likes of Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, and Crysis....interesting little game you have going, Andrew. Space them out a little more -- otherwise you'll get bored with it yourself!

I dare you to keep these things going for a year straight. Are you as disappointed with Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 as I am? Both are very good games, for sure (Assassin's Creed is very remarkable and the first time I've felt like I was playing a truly next-gen game, aside from BioShock); but I don't think either deserved the high praise they've received. Especially COD4; talk about a been-there, done-that experience with a mediocre, cliched scoring-approach. Don't get me wrong, multiplayer is a blast; but the single player campaign is a big bore. However, Mass Effect is a goddamn masterpiece alongside Super Mario Galaxy. I'm with you there, Ju-On.

The score to COD4 sounds too much like Kingdom Of Heaven. Gregson-Williams did do it.

I'm with you there, Ju-On.I'm not too disappointed with CoD4, but I'm still trying to get through it -- I'm playing first time through on Veteran, and moving slowly b/c I've got all these other games I'm playing at the same time. It's pure unadulterated craziness. Assassin's Creed is a lot of fun; haven't even gotten to the third dude yet tho, so still a lot left on that one. What's your gamertag?

Kr0n0s87 . . . but I need to renew my Gold Subscription. I haven't had much money to throw around for that, but hopefully I'll be getting some pay soon.Oh, before you bring up that point; I had all of these games paid in full before they were released.
And, yes, Assassin's Creed is a lot of fun; I just wish it had more variety and a better score (ha, funny, I put Goldsmith's The 13th Warrior into my hard drive to take care of that problem).

I actually still wish there was a score to Domino, just for the cue for the final shootout. I need to try Assassin's Creed though. I recently started playing games on my PS3 (I beat the crap out of Uncharted already) so maybe I should get that when I am done with Lego Star Wars...

Doesn't the music in the scene where the president is about to be assassinated (riding in the car/opening credits)sound like Saladin and To Jerusalem from Kingdom Of Heaven.

I think it was Alf's theme in Domino... It's the same exact recording of that instrument, just placed against different percussion loops.

Your right. Just use precreated loops and the same synth arrangements for everything. This was a team effort too. I think there was another composer working with him. I hope his game score for Metal Gear Solid 4 is a bit more original.

HGW usually knocks it out the park for his MGS scores; they're some of my favorites of his. If he doesn't deliver, then . . . I don't quite know yet.

Jeez, I suggested this round and haven't even responded. As much as I... admire.. Muppet Treasure Island, I would probably give this round to AWE as well. The Muppets for me is when Zimmer started to shape his sound to more what it is today (along with Drop Zone). And while a little crude, I think it still stands the test of time. My only other qualm with Muppets are those damn atrocious muppet songs right at the beginning of the disc (sorry, Shiver My Timbers does not work for me).

Nuts, I think it's time for 2 new Hans Zimmer rounds. One can be Hans Zimmer At War and be The Thin Red Line vs. Pearl Harbor and another could be Hans Zimmer Plays Ball and it could be League of Their Own vs. The Fan. I also think we need a Mark Mancina one, just in honor of August Rush. It could be like "Sad Vs. Action Vs. Disney" or something... yes...But seriously, I do think HGW can get it right even when using samples of other scores. I mean technically, Tony Scott has a tendency of using scores from other movies. And COD4 is a video game that probably didn't give HGW a huge ammount of time to write. I don't think that last sentence was actually a sentence, but you get the idea.

Andrew: I think you should quit your day job if Harry Gregson-Williams messes up Metal Gear Solid 4: Too Solid To Quit. That would be an appropriate response on your part, would it not?Clayton: Yeah! "Hans Zimmer Goes To War!"; "Hans Zimmer At War"; "Hans Zimmer Attacks Japan"; and "Hans Zimmer At War In Africa." Well, we'll let Andrew sit on this one and decide what kind of tricks he has in store for us.
