I've been waking up at unearthly hours over the past 2 months so as to do 5Km of jogging before I head to work, as part of what I hope will be preparations for the Malta Half-Marathon in February. After the first 3 or 4 jogs I decided to strap my iPod nano onto my arm and load some appropriate music on to help the minutes fly by. Sure enough I found that a few well-paced tracks actually helped my cut down my time significantly...

Here are some of the ones I'm using. Please feel free to add to the list since I'm trying to refresh my playlist as often as possible.

    1. For warming up (something slow and not too hectic, but with a definite repetitve 'beat' and steady flow).

Title track - The Day After Tomorrow (Harold Kloser)
Death is the Road to Awe - The Fountain (Mansell)
Main Theme - Terminator II (Brad Fiedel)
Fargo, North Dakota - Fargo (Burwell)
Suite - Forrest Gump (Silvestri) - works well becuase after a while the more energetic 'running' music kicks in
The Egg Travels - Dinosaur (JNH)
The End - Shakespeare in Love (Warbeck)
Leave No Man Behind - Black Hawk Down (Zimmer)

    1. For the Jog (something with a quicker pace, which ideally maintains the same pace throughout the track, and has a definitive rhythm or 'beat').

Tangiers - The Bourne Ultimatum (Powell) - my current favourite
Now We Are Free - Gladiator (Gerrard/Zimmer)
Africa Rundown - Casino Royale (Arnold)
Oveture - Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (Kamen) - 'opus' version
Running Scared - Main Title (Isham)
    Title Track - Unbreakable (JNH)
Ball - Plunkett & MacLeane (Armstrong)
Opening Titles - Fear (Burwell) - from his website
    Rescue - Rescue Dawn (Badelt)
Theme from Shaft - Shaft (Hayes/Arnold)
The 3:10 to Yuma - 3:10 to Yuma (Beltrami)
End Credits - Apollo 13 (Horner)
Mona Lisa Overdrive - Matrix Reloaded (Davis) - gets a bit too hectic at times
End Titles - Driving Miss Daisy (Zimmer)
Up Is Down - POTC: At World's End (Zimmer)
Main Theme - Men in Black (Elfman)
The Rhythm of the Horse - The Horse Whisperer (Newman)
Main Title - The Contender (Zimmer)
    Training - The Contender (Zimmer)

plus these classics for the final sprint..
Gonna Fly Now - Rocky (Conti)
Eye of the Tiger - Rocky III (Survivor)

I then usually have something relaxing lined up for my cooling down and walk home... - Iguazu or Sacrifice from The Insider usually work fine.

Sometimes I skip tracks because the temp isn't right, and sometimes I try out tracks which don't work at all, but overall these tracks are making my jogging much more enjoyable and effective.

any suggestions? what do you listen to while you jog? I'm sure there are hundreds of other great tracks because I selected these from the few scores I currently have ripped into my iTunes library.

Rudy's The Tryouts and Take Us Out are up there with Gonna Fly Now for fitness inspiration!

Redemption from Rocky 2 is also pretty cool.

Run Forest Run, from Forest Gump is pretty rousing too. (Oops you already mentioned that)

I also give Williams Olympic stuff a spin when excercising too, and some action Star Wars music.. Superman too

Kamen's On Wing's of Victory is great for exercise too.. imo

Wow! I thought I was the only one.

Here are a few favorites on my iPod running mix:

"Bullies and Sweet Rock" from THE ANT BULLY by John Debney
"Bumblebee" and "Arrival to Earth" from TRANSFORMERS by Steve Jablonsky
"Main Title" from FOR LOVE OF THE GAME by Basil Poledouris
"Drive Away" from LEMONY SNICKET by Thomas Newman
"Main Title" from BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA by Aaron Zigman
"Prologue-The Car Jacking" from BAD BOYS by Mark Mancina
"To Victory" from 300 by Tyler Bates
"Alone in a Crowd" from POLLOCK by Jeff Beal
"Training Hard" from THE KARATE KID by Bill Conti
"My Name is Lincoln" from THE ISLAND by Steve Jablonsky
"Gonna Fly Now" from ROCKY by Bill Conti
"Theme from Hoosiers" from HOOSIERS by Jerry Goldsmith
"Theme from Hot Fuzz" from HOT FUZZ by David Arnold
"Dinner Rush" from RATATOUILLE by Michael Giacchino
"Tryouts" from RUDY by Jerry Goldsmith

and all of John Williams' Olympic anthems...

You've got about a dozen or so on your list that are already on my running mix. I'm constantly trying to find more. It's interesting some pieces I think will work well end up not working at all and others I put on just to try end up being gold.

It is indeed amazing how much of a boost the right piece of film music can give you on a good run. It shaves down quite a few minutes off my time.

I'm training for my first half-marathon too!

    Great post!

Great post. I do the same thing.

I think everyone runs to "Gonna Fly Now."

Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom - Conan the Barbarian

Tapir Hunt - Apocalypto (Great if it's still dark in the early morning)

    The Crusade - Forrest Gump

The Uruk-hai - The Two Towers

Journey to the Island - Jurassic Park

    Anything epic.

Started going through my unripped CDs to see which tracks to rip and add to the playlist...

    From 'The Truman Show':
    Drive
    A New Life
    Underground/Storm

'Homeland (Main Title)' and 'Run Free' from Spirit (Zimmer)

'Ray's Theme' from Steamboy (Jablonsky) - I always thought this track sounded just right for some Olympic montage

'Journey to the Line' and 'Stone in My Heart' from The Thin Red Line (Zimmer)

'Beirut Taxi' and 'Fathers and Sons' from Syriana (Desplat)

and how could I have forgotten Morricone's:
The Ecstasy of Gold (The Good the Bad and the Ugly)
On Earth as it is in Heaven (The Mission)
    L'Arena (Il Mercenario)

and for 'Bullies and the Sweet Rock' as suggested above (from the Ant Bully) I edited out the first minute and 37 secs.

Paul's Theme (Jogging Chase) from "Cat People" works...

    Also Powell's work on "Endurance"--definitely.

I've sprained my ankle while running to get a coffee... I'm now playing PLANET EARTH as visions of restored leg use fill my head.
