I just saw that PK created yet another package update thread for Howard Shore's LotR trilogy of scores; which, let's face it, have created an entirely new generation of score enthusiasts. I decided to run some quick checks of previous LotR-related threads; specifically before the films were released in cinemas. I wasn't a member during this time, and I don't remember lurking about these parts (I can't even recall when I started doing that). I do remember my very first score purchase being The Phantom Menace back in 1999; but for some odd reason I don't ever remember there being any doubt about Howard Shore's abilities in regards to this undertaking. On my research, I found this particular thread and many of the posts (from many members who still actuvely post here) are very doubtful of any of Shore's abilities. Hell, even Brian was unsure; he clearly wanted Horner to come through and deliver another patented "masterpiece". Even Elfman (!) was considered a more-valuable cantidate for the project. While I can understand choices such as the still-living Poledouris and Goldsmith, Kilar and Barry are nice choices, but Carter Burwell? I love his scores for the Coens and his others; but his style would be extremely awkward for the silly land of Middle-Earth.

But thankfully Shore was chosen, we get some attention from a boring Academy, Doug Adams gets a great job, package update threads become the rage, and people look at my Cronenberg/Shore thread.

Now we're clearly in world harmony.

The funniest thing from that thread, Andrew, is that Mark Olivarez LOVES The Patriot! HAHA! "Crazy bastard, he's gonna' get us all killed."

Since I had associated Shore with rather dissonant music like Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, I was very disappointed. Boy, was I ever surprised as to how melodic and thematic Shore could be. Turned out to be a great choice.

Joan, you're telling me that you never gave stuff like Big, Looking for Richard, Ed Wood, or eXistenZ a listen?! You crazy woman you!

There's a lot of funny stuff in that thread Sean. I've been scouring through all of the pre-LotR threads and there were some serious characters around here. I did a lot of LOLZ-ing.

Ah Mark! You can listen to the score all you want, but do you like the movie?!

Hey Nuts, most people find me quite SANE.
Yeah, I've heard two that you mentioned. Really enjoy BIG. It was actually LOTR that made look at Shore's other scores.

I was familiar with Shore essentially by reputation. I knew he was well-regarded, but his soundtracks from movies I'd seen--The Fly, Silence of the Lambs--though effective at the time, didn't stick in my memory. Thus, I was rather dubious. I had also heard that Wojciech Kilar had been in the running and didn't get it. I loved his music for Dracula, so I was disappointed that he didn't get the nod.

However, HS proved all the doubters wrong in spades, and I've seldom been so happy to be proved wrong!

Oh, Mark loves it when the sexist, anti-Semite Mel Gibson runs at the screen screaming while carrying the stars and stripes all in slow-motion.

I have to say, The Patriot is probably Williams's worst score to date; it's certainly his most embarrassing--Amistad is a close second.

I'd love to hear Ed Wood, but couldn't find a copy yet.

Funny, I was handed a copy. It's great stuff.

Now back to more important things, like The Patriot!

Do what you must to hear it gkgyver! It's a great score aside from Hollywood Records seeming to one-up Decca by including dialogue over some great cues.

Does anyone else like to play The Aviator and Ed Wood together?

Honestly, I think after Big I had no hesitation that Shore was capable of a score like LOTR...

If I'm in a Shore mood (which is at least twice a week), I'll program the two together. They both utilize that trademark Golden Age sound and they both are amazing!

Andrew, I think you misunderstand: gkgyver was probably suggesting a sexual innuendo, to which your response was to be: "I LIKE."
