This just in at Varese. 3 strong titles:

BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE
    Original Television Soundtrack

Music Composed by George S. Clinton

    WINNER OF SIX EMMY AWARDS!

Beginning with the Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE intertwines the unique perspectives of three characters: Charles Eastman (Adam Beach), né Ohiyesa, a young, Dartmouth-educated, Sioux doctor held up as living proof of the alleged success of assimilation; Sitting Bull (August Schellenberg), the proud Lakota chief who refuses to submit to U.S. government policies designed to strip his people of their identity, their dignity and their sacred land — the gold-laden Black Hills of the Dakotas; and Senator Henry Dawes (Aidan Quinn), one of the architects of the government policy on Indian affairs.

While Eastman and patrician schoolteacher Elaine Goodale (Anna Paquin) work to improve life for the Sioux on the reservation, Senator Dawes lobbies President Grant (Fred Dalton Thompson) for more humane treatment, opposing the bellicose stance of General William Tecumseh Sherman (Colm Feore).

Hope rises for the Sioux in the form of the prophet Wovoka (Wes Studi) and the Ghost Dance — a messianic movement that promises an end of their suffering under the white man.

This hope is all but obliterated after the killing of Sitting Bull and the massacre of hundreds of Lakota men, women and children by the 7th Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek on Dec. 29, 1890.

George S. Clinton was Emmy-nominated for his beautifully authentic, period score.

    THE GREAT DEBATERS
    Original Motion Picture Score

Music Composed by James Newton Howard

Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South and inspired by a true story, The Great Debaters chronicles the journey of a brilliant but volatile coach (Washington) who uses the power of words to shape a group of underdog students from a small, modest black college in East Texas into an elite debate team while challenging the social mores of the time, culminating with a groundbreaking invitation to debate Harvard’s championship team.

The film also stars Forest Whitaker (Best Actor Oscar winner for The Last King of Scotland) and Kimberly Elise.

The inspiring and emotional score was composed by James Newton Howard.

    CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by James Newton Howard

    Tom Hanks
    Julia Roberts
    Philip Seymour Hoffman

    Directed by Mike Nichols
    (Closer, Primary Colors, The Graduate)

CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR is the true story of how a playboy congressman, a renegade CIA agent and a beautiful Houston socialite joined forces to lead the largest and most successful covert operation in history. Their efforts contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, with consequences that reverberate throughout the world today. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman team with director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to bring George Crile’s best-selling book to the screen.

Charlie Wilson (Hanks) was a bachelor congressman from Texas who had a habit of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. His “Good Time Charlie” exterior, however, masked an extraordinary mind, a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog, and in the early 1980s the underdog was Afghanistan — which had just been brutally invaded by the Russians.

Charlie’s longtime friend and patron and sometime lover was Joanne Herring (Roberts), one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Believing the American response to the Russian invasion was anemic at best, she prods Charlie into doing more for the Mujahideen (Afghan freedom fighters).

Charlie’s partner in this uphill endeavor is CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Hoffman), a blue-collar operative in a company of Ivy League blue bloods. Together, the three of them — Charlie, Joanne and Gust — travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.

Their success was remarkable. Funding for covert operations against the Soviets went from $5 million to $1 billion annually. The Red Army retreated out of Afghanistan. When asked how a group of peasants was able to deliver such a decisive blow to the army of a superpower, Pakistani President Mohammad Zia ul-Haq responded simply, “Charlie did it.”

The score for Charlie Wilson’s War was composed by James Newton Howard.

Universal Pictures opens Charlie Wilson’s War on over 3000 screens on December 25th.

I think that even Sylvester Stallone considered him for Rambo; now that would have been interesting!
