The new trailer of ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD sounds like it has some new music by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave, which fans of the score to THE PROPOSITION are bound to appreciate: http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/archives/2007/08/new_jesse_james.php

Looks like it will be a fine film indeed, if the visuals are anything to go by. The novel is great.

    Thanks, excellent news indeed.

Franzie, how you come up with your thread titles is a different story altogether. I read it and was like "what the.... ???"!!

I'm looking forward to new westerns. Hope 3:10 To Yuma and Jesse James are great westerns. And of course, I'd sell my soul for a western score like Goldsmith, Morricone, and Bernstein composed. Franz, I liked The Proposition as a movie, but I admit to being sorely disappointed in the music.

I must admit Joan that my muscles tensed up involuntarily in THE PROPOSITION when the electric guitar kicked in. On subsequent viewings however, I've come to enjoy that moment. For me, the main appeal of the score is the morose main theme that plays over the final scene between Guy Pearce and Danny Huston.

I think that a more tough, orchestral sound like Fielding would have suited the film well also, but I appreciate that they were trying out new things. I don't think a more traditional Americana-type score would have suited at all... partly because of the location, but also the tone of the film.

Personally, I like the Thomas Newman feel the trailer had so I wouldn't mind something that sounds like him. But the movie looks fantastic! I remember when I first saw a teaser for it a long... long... long time ago. Hope it's good!

The trailer sounded very much like a Cave/Ellis composition, albeit in a much softer vein than most of THE PROPOSITION.

I hope this film and score are decent. We have seen so many films on Jesse James over the years, some good and some bad. The worst one of all was the one with Audie Murphy where he was the leader of the Quantrill outfit on the raid on Lawrence, when at the time he was a mere teenager and just one of the gang. In that film, they showed the Kansas River, but the mountains in the background was another big goof. LOL>

It reminds me of the scene in Bonnie and Clyde where they stole Gene Wilder's car and they started chasing them. This took place in North Texas and I got a big laugh when I saw the Sierra Nevadas over in the background during the chase scene.

I can't wait for this one (and why should I wait any longer). This has been on my radar since its announcement in 2005 (!) and that very first, quite haunting teaser we got back in '06 was extraordinary. I caught the trailer last night in HD on a friend's computer and I must admit: WOW! It looks like a long lost Terrence Malick film made in-between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line. And after the director's last work on Chopper, I'm assuming the violence will steer towards Peckinpah and The Proposition levels. I think the Western might come back in some form of niche; it's always been there, but only brave filmmakers (Kevin Costner included, Open Range is one hell of a film) have been venturing out into the West from time to time. Tommy Lee Jones' The Three Buriels of Melquiades Estarada (already mentioned in this thread) was some kind of great and the Coens' No Country for Old Men looks to be a tip-top post-modern Western. I reads that Ridley Scott has the rights of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian (also the author of No Country) on lockdown, which is quite unfortunate because he hasn't had the range to adapt such an epic tale since Blade Runner (let's face it, nearly everything after BR is weak for a director of his potential). I trust Scott Rudin as a producer, but I wish that Tommy Lee Jones still held the rights. He would have handled that well. I'm also looking forward to 3:10 to Yuma, it's a shame it has such a generic director but the cast looks nice.

I find of late I'm really appreciating adaptations of novels that preserve the author's voice. LITTLE CHILDREN, PERFUME (though translated!), and now ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES. So much of the power of this film, for me, comes from the rich cadence of that informed voice.

JESSE JAMES is a good film. Early on, I wondered whether it really might have been a teensy bit leisurely... not because it was boring, but more it was definitely not in a hurry. The last half hour of the film though is worth the wait. Quite a moving finale, as we see one guy become another. I wanted a little bit more of Jesse's wife in there.. she really isn't much of a character in the film, but what we have is better than what most films hope to offer.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack is an interesting one. It most underscores montages between scenes. There are almost no real-time scenes which feature the music, and the familiarity of the narration cues becomes a bit annoying when they all start the same way and plod along in the same rhythm. The four scenes that stand as exceptions to this, and which contain the most interesting use of music in the film, are: (i) the assassination of Ed (Jesse shoots in off his horse at night); (ii) the night train robbery; (iii) the assassination of Jesse James (a very strong scene) and (iv) 'Song for Bob'. The latter is the only part where I'd say the music really capitalises on its emotional potential to the best - it's such a strong finale cue, going a long way towards leaving the patient audience in a great place.

Good film. I want to see the shorter and the longer versions.

So, was the trailer music actually from the film then? I can't wait to see this. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be waiting for video since no place around me is playing this... stupid Minnesota and its twineyness... Also, anyone know if there's going to be a score release by any chance?

That music IS from the film. It's called 'A Rather Lovely Thing' on the soundtrack album (which I bought off the shelf in Sydney two weeks ago, so it is around).

Sooo I just checked on Amazon.com and they want $26.99 for the soundtrack. As far as I can tell, it's not an import or anything. Sooo Peter, is there any chance of you carrying this score?

Nevermind, I see it is an import, but they also list a Feb 5th release date (which is also the home video release date) so maybe we'll see something then.
