JOHN WILLIAMS TO SPEAK AT BERKSHIRE MUSEUM AUGUST 21
PITTSFIELD, MA (August 14, 2007) – John Williams, acclaimed composer and Boston Pops Laureate Conductor, will join host Martin Bookspan for the “Joys of Tanglewood” lecture at the Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield on Tuesday, August 21, at 10 a.m. The lecture will conclude the 2007 series, which is co-sponsored by the Berkshire Museum and the Tanglewood Association of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Association of Volunteers. Tickets are $12 ($10 for Tanglewood Friends and Berkshire Museum members). Tickets are available by telephone at 413-443-7171, extension 10.Williams is Boston Pops Laureate Conductor and currently holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. John Williams has composed the music and served as music director for more than 100 films, including Memoirs of a Geisha, all six films in the Star Wars series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Terminal, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Angela’s Ashes, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, JFK, Hook, Home Alone, Presumed Innocent, Born on the Fourth of July, the three Indiana Jones films, Empire of the Sun, The Witches of Eastwick, E.T. (the Extra-Terrestrial), Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Williams has received 45 Academy Award nominations. In addition to his film music, Williams has written many concert pieces, including two symphonies, and concertos for bassoon, cello, flute, violin, clarinet, tuba, and trumpet. His Soundings was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the opening of Disney Hall in October 2003, and his Horn Concerto was premiered in November 2003 by the Chicago Symphony and its principal horn Dale Clevenger. He composed Call of the Champions for the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the NBC News theme “The Mission,” the themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic games, and Tributes! (for Seiji), honoring Seiji Ozawa’s 25th anniversary as BSO music director.
Series host Martin Bookspan is best known as “the voice of Lincoln Center,” a role he has had since the first Live from Lincoln Center in 1976. During his distinguished career in print and broadcasting he has worked with the BSO, the New York Philharmonic, classical station WQXR, and channels 7 and 11 in New York City. He is the author of 101 Masterpieces of Music and Their Composers and Consumer Reports Reviews: Classical Recordings.
