When pulling CDs for various orders the other day, I came across different orders for both Enemy of the State and Enemy at the Gates. It got me thinking this could be an interesting forum topic with two levels of creativity:

    1) Finding pairs of movies/soundtracks that are similar in name (as in the above example)

    2) A brief discussion on the two, comparing them when applying your likes and dislikes when it comes to your preference of movie music.

You have to put your thinkin' cap on for part one, unless you have a super pimped up computer that can do the finding for you. Part two shouldn't be too hard...

This can be an overlapping thread where new comparisons can be made at anytime. If you think of a new pair of similarly named movies, post it right away!

So, we begin: Enemy at the Gates or Enemy of the State... which would you play first?

Sadly, I would say "pass" on both of those...

    However:

    The New World vs Waterworld?

    I say Waterworld. What you?

Two I keep mixing up when typing their titles: Sleepers and Sneakers. One is an underrated and very unusual Williams score, not his most entertaining, but with a highly engaging action cue. The other, despite its heavy Glass and Beethoven influences (and Pärt, apparently, but it's been too long since I've heard any Pärt myself), is Horner's best score.

    My vote goes to Sneakers.

Here's a tough one: Last of the Dogmen or Last of the Mohicans

I'd rather play both at the same time than have to choose.

You are a super hardcore movie music fan to want to play both at the same time instead of choosing between the two! What do you think: one in each headphone, or both loudly in the same room?

    We need more like you!

    Ahum, Darkman or Dark City?

    Blue or red?

    Red Planet http://www.moviemusic.com/soundtrack/redplanet

Tough one, although I'd probably side with Fenton...

Blue vs Red Pill strikes again...

THE THIN RED LINE (Zimmer) vs THE THIN BLUE LINE (Glass)

I go with the Zimmer score.

    Also:
    - THE FOG OF WAR (Glass) vs THE DOGS OF WAR (Burgon) - Glass wins this time, but that's only because I haven't heard the Burgon score, and don't really like Burgon as much as I like Glass in general

    Easy call?
Bad Boys (Mancina) / Bad Girls (Goldsmith)?

    Bad Girls...because I can't find it.

    Slightly tougher...
Midnight Express (Moroder) / Midnight Run (Elfman)?

    Midnight Run.

    Who remembers...
Get Carter (Tyler) / Get Shorty (Lurie)?

    Get Shorty is groovier.

    And also...
Gods and Monsters (Burwell) / Gods and Generals (Frizell)?

I do enjoy a good Burwell score...G&G is decent, though, so tough call.

    Buggles or The Police?
The Lion King (Zimmer) / The Leopard Son (Copeland)

I'd go with The Leopard Son, but not because I don't like Zimmer...

    Tough one..
Mr. Baseball (Goldsmith) / Mrs. Winterbourne (Doyle)...

I'd side with Doyle on this one.

    Not bad...
    Spaceballs (Morris) / SpaceCamp (Williams)
SpaceCamp still doesn't have a legitimate release....

    A slight stretch..
    1941 (Williams) / 1492 (Vangelis)

    1941. Catchier.

    Spy Game (Gregson-Williams) / Spy Kids (oh..let's say...Elfman)?

    I enjoy Spy Game...

The Terminal (Williams) / The Terminator (Fidel)

    The Terminal is fun.

    And the triple threat...
Iron Giant (Kamen) / Iron Monkey (Venable) / Iron Will (McNeely)

Venable's got promise, but this fight's between McNeely and Kamen, and I'm partial to Kamen.

Cute idea, Peter, and there are so many creative answers.

I go with Cool Runnings (Zimmer), Cool World (Isham) and Cool Hand Luke (Shifrin.) Well duh, Luke and Shifrin would win every time.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to:

Return of the Jedi or Return of the King?

I can't decide. Maybe King wins because of all the tracked in music in the Jedi finale, whereas King has loads of new brilliant music comapred to the previous 2 films.

Another two I keep mixing up:

...especially since it's the latter one that actually has lions in it.

Bee Season (Nashel) or The Sting (Joplin/Hamlish)?

    I'd go for The Sting...

Merchant of Venice (Pook) or The Borrowers (Gregson-Williams)?

Merchant of Venice is very intersting.

Fly Away Home (Isham) or Drop Zone (Zimmer)?

Zimmer's got some intersting riffs in DZ, but Isham overall.

North and South (Conti) or East-West (Doyle)?

Tough one. What do you think?

Edward Scissorhands (Elfman) or The Cutting Edge (Williams)?

Cutting Edge is pleasant enough, though Scissorhands is really a classic.

    Troy (Horner) or Rome (Beal)?

I'd go with Rome, right now.

    Eragon (Doyle) or Eraser (Silvestri)?

Doyle has a pretty good fantasy record. Sticking with him.

The Black Hole (Barry) or Event Horizon (Kamen)?

Kamen even spoke poorly of Horizon. Barry on this one, for sure.

    Firefly (Edmonson) or Dragonfly (Debney)?

    Firefly, without hesitation.

Kama Sutra (Danna) or The Firm (Grusin)?

    Grusin's a little more captivating.

    Backdraft (Zimmer) or Sirens (Portman)?

    Backdraft.

    Ghostbusters (Bernstein) or Poltergeist (Goldsmith)?

    Ghostbusters.

True Lies (Fidel) or The Straight Story (Badalamenti)?

    Badalamenti on this one.

    Transamerica (Mansfield) or Transformers (DiCola)?

    Wow, that's unfortunate... DiCola.

Casablanca (Steiner) or The Usual Suspects (Ottman)?

    Seemed inevitable...

Cleopatra (Jones) or Snakes on a Plane (Rabin)

    It's a stretch...

    other longshots...
Cat People (Moroder) vs. Dog Soldiers (Thomas)...
Pearl Harbor (Zimmer) vs. The Nightmare Before Christmas (Elfman). [ouch.]
Dolphins (Wood) vs. The Net (Isham)...
    Bambi (Churchill) vs. Godzilla (Ikufube)...
The Godfather (Rota) vs. Stepmom (Williams)...
Julius Caesar (Scott) vs. House of Flying Daggers (Umbayashi)...
Aliens (Horner) vs. Green Card (Zimmer)...

Wow Lancelot, those pairs are extremely creative. I had to stop and ponder the connections for a few of them, and the answers (connections)were worth the cognitive and humorous journeys. Really well-done.
(P.S. Love Doyle, but I'd pick Conti's North and South over East and West. NS is just gorgeous.)
