I've heard talk that Sony Classical plans to reissue the CD previously marketed as Elliot Goldenthal's TITUS score as '302: BACK TO THERMOPYLAE' in the belief that more shelved stock will sell under that title, and that fans of the Tyler Bates score won't really know the difference.

The forthcoming "300 Deluxe Edition" set will include three additional score cues plus a remix by Philip Steir. It also features a 42-page hard-bound art booklet.

Holy f$%^ing $#!t. That piece of crap score? I could think of like 5 Goldsmith/Horner/Williams/ whoever that deserves a "complete" release, "300" are you @#$%$#%$# me??? Go grab "Titus" if you want more (not to mention the original!)
That's dramatic.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I was just looking at the prices for this release. $15 for a 60 minute, 25 track release, or $40 for a 29 track release... Why would someone spend $25 extra for 4 tracks? Is there something else that comes with the CD? Like a solid gold copy autographed by Elliot Goldenthal?Clayton

The way that statement is worded by WB makes me think they like Eliot way more than they do Tyler. Hopefully there are lessons learned by this... the temp track has moved the line so far, and now it has reached its end. Perhaps a huge retreat will be in order!

That was funny! On a more serious note, it's too bad Bates finds himself in this situation because the score is growing on me. It's always best to create and use your own work.

That little disclaimer is very surreal. It honestly seems like Warner is saying: "If we had known any better, we would've slapped Tyler on his wrists and made him return Elliot's music." Very nice find! I keep on meaning to turn on the commentary track on the DVD to see if director Zack Snyder or any other crew mentions the score. Since buying the DVD, I haven't really been to enthusiastic about viewing it again; I'm too busy with modern classics like Zodiac and The Host to be bothered.

Don't get me excited now. Actually, my dream composer for Watchmen (please, everyone, as a favor to us fans, there is no "The" preceding "Watchmen") has always been Marco Beltrami.

So...does this "mistake" (for lack of another word) in Tyler Bates' career turn any of you off his music or stop you from ever thinking of picking up anything he scores in the future?I still bought his "collector's edtion".
Don't get me wrong, I think what he did for 300 may be hurtful for his career, but, i still like the score to 300 (even thought I like Titus more) and his other scores.Just curious as to how this effects someone who likes his music.

I like the score, but I am very dissapointed that he couldn't actually write something original. He also did the same thing in Slither, but Universal didn't appologize for him ripping off Harry Gregson-Williams' Spy Game. I think it was because Slither was a much smaller movie, but it's still an IDENTICAL copy of Spy Game.Clayton

I simply didn't buy the score for 300. I'm willing to throw Bates a line here and there, with him being a new and upcoming composer who's finding his footing amongst a sea of other well-known composers. Of Bates' previous work I own both The Devil's Rejects and Slither; and while Clayton is spot-on about Bates stealing some of HGW's Spy Game for the latter, I think there are some well-meaning parts amongst it. My only worry for his future as a composer is what Zach Snyder ultimately decides to temp Watchmen with. He's gone on record that he wants a very Se7en/David Fincher feeling in the movie; which means he might temp it with some of Howard Shore's music. And certainly, many of Shore's scores lend themselves well to the world of Alan Moore's Watchmen (notably eXistenZ and Panic Room). I just hope that the score community's reaction to his blatant plagarism in 300 has convinced him to take a more original approach with the next one. At least I hope so.

The biggest reason for my purchase was the hopes that my $14.99 might pursuade Warner Bros. that Zach Snyder needs full creative control and whatever budget he needs for Watchmen. And coming from a man who praises Frankenfish and plans to christen his child "Kirk-Spock" I think you'd understand the need for a guilty please now and again.

As for Tyler Bates, my opinion of him specifically isn't harmed at all, as I'd be surprised if he was doing anything other than following orders. I also doubt his career is in jeopardy, as temp track copying doesn't seem to be very uncommon or particularly frowned upon within the film industry. He might piss off a few of the composers he copies, but they aren't the ones doing the hiring.
That disclaimer was pretty fun to read, though.

I have to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of 300. It's just a bunch of slow motion battles that take away from the real "money shots". Granted it is supposed to be a popcorn movie, but why not add more to it. Instead of having an hour's worth of slow motion footage, work on the story. Yes I realize this is a graphic novel, but there's no anticipation built up for the battle. So when the battles start, it's just meh to me. I didn't care about anyone involved or what they were fighting for. And the only reason I got the movie was because everyone of my friends and family kept talking it up so I was like "sure I'll get it on Blu-Ray" and then after watching it, it was just a big meh to me. The score is what kept me interested, even if it is stolen. However, if Tyler Bates keeps "borrowing" from other scores, I am afraid I wont be a huge fan of his for long. Not that I am a huge fan of his right now, but I do own The Devil's Rejects so that counts for something.Clayton

Easy there, BigT, I was just talkin' smack at my pal, nuts, and not writing about other people's opinions about the movie. (Just friendly bickering: He went after me for my love of Frankenfish and Star Trek and it made me laugh pretty hard; he's a funny bastard, that one!) As for what my serious opinion of 300 would be, it's the same as Clayton's.

Have you seen the workouts they went through?! Holy crap!
After listening to some of the cues outside of the movie, I have to say I actually like this score more than I did when I saw the movie. But now it's more obvious the things he ripped off, Titus, Gladiator, Passion of The Christ and Black Hawk Down. Some of it reminded me of Smokin' Aces for some reason... But really the only identical copy is Titus. Other than that it's just styled like the other scores.
