So, I felt I should remind everyone here that tomorrow on SciFi, the last episode of "Stargate SG-1" titled "Unending" will air here in the States, and I know for me, with most shows I love, it's always bitter sweet.I remember like it was yesterday, rewind to 1994, "Stargate" hit theaters and I was floored. I remember seeing it more than a few times and of course had Arnold's score...one of my first CDs actually.
A friend of my father's that a series was in the works, but it was on Showtime, that we didn't have. Boo-Hoo.
So I waited, and waited and then...forgot about it. I knew it was on, but I figured it had been on for so long, what's the point? I was at school and had run out of either "24" or "The West Winng" and I wanted to start a new series. Jeron suggested "SG-1". Perfect!
I kicked off the show and haven't looked back. Some great SciFi here, in a series that's always well produced in every aspect. With some great characters, (Jack and Daniel) that I loved from the movie, and new ones too (Sam and Teal'c to same some) the show has taken on a life of its own and has always been a joy to watch.
It took them a few seasons, but they finally locked Joel Goldsmith into full time scoring duties, and eventually, he'd travel with the show to "Atlantis." Joel's music is amazing, and it's only gotten better with time. In the last two seasons, we're introduced to the Ori and Joel uses a dark choral theme that's just amazing writing for a TV series.
"SG-1" reminds us that there really is some good TV in the world. And I think it stands as one of the great pilers of episodic SciFi TV.
But we still have "SG-A," which is amazing too, and soon, we'll have a thrid spin off called "Universe." But I know that I'll miss the adventures of "SG-1." I guess there's something to be said for the original huh?
I've seen the final episode, thanks to my "Hookup" and really, it's an interesting episode, and you'll be glad that "Ark of Truth" will be coming this Fall.
I'm glad I own this show on DVD, and I hope there will be some more music released for it.
Anyway, remember to watch.

I've been an SG-1 fan for years and it is sad to see it go. But I also keep in mind that it got 10 healthy seasons, something most TV shows cannot do. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I really enjoyed the past three seasons (there were great episodes and then there were not so good episodes). The first seven seasons though... I pretty much liked every episode.SG-A is another story. I couldn't get into it. The cast is just too weak, IMO. Perhaps I'll give the DVDs a try if and when I buy them.
Joel did do an incredible job with the music. The first season he spent a lot of time taking over the reigns from Arnold's themes. After that, he developed some powerful motifs. I sometimes find myself paying more attention to the music than the picture.
Looking forward to tomorrow night's episode and the not one, but two succeeding movies.

Yeah, "SG-A" takes a season to find it's feet, but 2 and 3 rock. Season 2 is on DVD, and Season 3 hits in September.Give it a chance

I had to sneak into the theatre to see Stargate because I was too young to get passed the rating (what was it? PG-13? HA!) and was caught, but the usher was kind of enough to let my friends and I into the screening anyway. It's one of my most fond movie-going memories to date (caught this one at least 4 times in the cinema, along with Star Trek Generations that year, wow '94!). I loved the film and score! I paid $30 of saved up allowance money to buy Arnold's music on tape!!! HAHA! Crazy! Anyway, too bad this show is gone. It was good and fun, and I'm glad their doing some TV movies with it, so that'll be another ride coming up. SGA lost my interest pretty quickly this season after "The Return Part 2" (which I thought was fantastic)... Joel Goldsmith continues to deliver some classy music for this series, so I hope he releases way more of his SG music in the future!

Atlantis is supposedly going in a new direction next year with Carter joining the cast, I'll give it a shot, but I haven't enjoyed it that much other than the crossover episodes.

There's 2 Stargate SG-1 films being made right now that will be direct-to-DVD films. They will be wrapping up the story arc with the Ory and such. There is also a third Stargate series in the works right now.

I mentioned the third series. And I'm also betting SciFi will premiere the movies before they hit DVD.

I doubt Sci-Fi will air them before they're released.

Um, they can get a larger audience that way. And since SciFi is producing them, it makes sense. I'm sure if anything the DVD launch will be within days of it being on TV or visa versa.--Brian

Brian is probably right: TV first, DVD second. The looks-to-kick-frakking-ass Battlestar Pegasus movie/"event"/2-part episode will air first in November on Sci-Fi Channel and then be released on DVD a few days later. SG will be no different.

It will depend on wheather SCI-FI has patched fences with MGM/UA who actually own the property. Reportedly, MGM/UA was not happy about the cancellation of the series and considered shopping the series to other venues. They felt the series still had plenty of life left in it. Unfortunately, SCI-FI has exclusive rights to run new episodes and to buy out that contract would be prohibitively expensive. That was the main reason that they went direct to DVD. SCI-FI does not control home market distribution and MGM/UA does. MGM/UA felt that the abrupt end would damage the aftermarket sellibilty of the DVD's not mention foreign syndication, of which SCI-FI get's nothing at all.
I am sure SCI-FI would love to show the follow-up movies and I hope they do but it will depend on exactly how many pounds of flesh MGM/UA wants to extract and whether SCI-FI can still make money.

Rant begin.Sci-Fi is an absurbly horrific network. I rate them second worst in my book only marginally behind the ultra-bad UPN. Between fake wrestling and absolutely pathetic "Sci-Fi Original" movies, Sci-Fi has almost next to nothing in terms of good science fiction. They treat their schedule as a dart board, give good shows like BSG HUGE 9-month long breaks (wtf is that?!), and was only able to retain the worst of the Trek series.
I hope MGM tells Sci-Fi where they can stick it. I'd rather buy the DVDs than have to sit through an airing on that obscene network.
End rant.

I'm in Canada, so we don't even get Sci-Fi Channel... we've got the Space Channel and that's pretty darn good: all the Treks air on it; same with SG and BSG (even BSG 1980!!! and the original series); and so much more. No wrestling on the Canadian version, HAHA! So, I'll buy the DVDs anyway and forgo watching the SG movies on TV.

I loved it. It may not have wrapped things up with the Ori (that's what the upcoming movie is for) but it was a beautiful episode and a touching farewell. Shades of "All Good Things" from Star Trek: The Next Generation. And that is a nice comparison and good company.

That's why we get "Ark of Truth." Which they've said all along will wrap up the show.--Brian

Yes, I know. I'm just venting my shock. I think the final episode was a rush job due to the cancellation. I just think it was poorly done especially considering it is technically the series finale.posted 06-22-2007 10:55 PM PT (US)

It wasn't originally intended as a series finale, though as they thought they were getting additional seasons, right?posted 06-22-2007 11:12 PM PT (US)

Yes, they thought there was going to be at least one more season for SG-1. I thought the series finale for SG-1 was a bit of a let down as well. I'm glad Richard Dean Anderson will be in one of the SG-1 movies and he should have been in the series finale.I'm interested to see where Stargate Universe goes...hopefully it will be as good as SG-1 and Atlantis have been.
