Listening to the score... and... I hear some terrific nods to Kamen's unmistakable style. Smart of Beltrami to go that direction, rather than alienate all of us who still wish Kamen were still alive to score this film. Of course, there's a healthy 70-80% Beltrami presence here, but I'm glad Kamen is getting some homage.Impressed so far. Hopefully the movie has legs.

Which piece of classical music does this Die Hard score lean on, out of curiosity...?

I though that piece was only for the trailers.

Ahhh Mark, if there's one constant in the universe it's that I'm always right and you're always wrong... JK! LOL!From what I can tell this nifty new Die Hard score doesn't take any direct classical nods. There's for sure splashes of Kamen's "terrorist" theme and the way this entire score is written definitely is a tribute to Kamen's Die Hard scores; it reminds me of the way Beltrami treated Goldsmith's material for The Omen re-make. "Out Of Bullets" is a fantastic example.

I think it is a very mediocre and boring action score. It's nice to hear Kamen's theme though.
In my opinion Beltrami is not a very talented composer. He had written 2 or 3 good scores, after that he only repeats himself. His "horrorish" style is very boring.
The only good part in his action scores are the percussion performance, which is usually creative.NP: Live Free or Die Hard ***/*****

When Beltrami gets creative with his orchestration, he writes some of the best current action music out there (I Robot, Hellboy, Flight of the Phoenix), but sometimes it just isn't there (T3). Either way, he's one of the only composers I look forward to hearing new work from anymore. I'm curious about how his signature sound will fit in with a Die Hard movie, but I still can't say I'm altogether excited about it.

I recently heard some of the first track on the album and was wondering: is this the only portion of the CD that sounds distinctly like Kamen's previous Die Hard scores or is it just the "terrorist" theme that makes a few appearances here and there afterwards?Looking forward to this one; it sounds like the album is pretty relentless.

I have to listen to the score again, but I think that might be the only part of Kamen's score that is referred to directly (on more than just the first track, and with a bit of variety might I add): A lot of the action writing definitely has the Die Hard sound to it, and you could make comparisons to Kamen's "The Battle" and "Assault On The Tower" from the original to this one.

Suprisingly, initial reviews from both critics and moviegoers are very positive. I would have expected the moviegoer scores to be high (as most of the posts are from midnight showings attended by rapid fans), but the critics seem pleased overall as well. Not what I was expecting, and I am now very much looking forward to the film.
I very much enjoy Beltrami's work, so I am looking forward to this one.

Best movie of the summer so far (that I've seen) and a welcome return to a solid action film. Yes, some of the computer plot points strain credibility, but it works overall.I didn't notice the music much...accept from the obvious (and very cool) Kamen references.
If it wasn't for kids and that robot movie coming out, I would go see this one again
