Viacom has sold off Famous Music, the music publishing division of Paramount Pictures. Sony/ATV is now the owner. This opens up at least a little bit of speculation, specifically regarding movie soundtracks....

Isn't Sony owned by Universal?
It seems like Sony Classsical, RCA, Philips, Decca, and Universal are all combined and released on any given label, at least in regards to classical.posted 05-31-2007 12:23 AM PT (US)

Sony and Universal are two totally different music empires.I think it could be rather interesting actually. And hopefully a good thing for us.

That's assuming Sony has any interest... let's hope there are some Star Trek advocates over there, because the only way I see this happening is if someone decides to spearhead it personally simply b/c they want to. As much as I'd love to see new Star Trek releases, I don't see how anyone could see much profit in it...

The only difference now with a new owner is there may be someone to answer the door when the producers come knocking. Before there wasn't.

Good point. Any idea what's IN that catalog?

Essentially all original music written for Paramount Pictures movies from 1928 on! This is broad, though, as many publishing rights may be co-owned, especially on films were Paramount Pictures was not the sole owner/producer of the film.

In that case, how does this apply to the Indiana Jones scores?

But yeah, on to specifics...
Raiders of the Lost Ark for one! George Lucas and Sony combo... not that there is a 100% direct relationship in this specific case, but look at what Sony's done with all that Star Wars music once Sony got it. Having Indy music in circulation again would be fantastic.Umm, a 1000 unit limited edition of the complete remastered Beverly Hills Cop score? I need an expanded Axel F theme.
But I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Intrada might show interest in some Mancini titles like the original tracks (even if in mono) from Hatari or Breakfast at Tiffany's.
It would be nice to see something like Chinatown back in print... although Universal may still have a contract on that publishing right, which came from Paramount's sale of ABC Records to MCA in the 70s. It will likely end up that some out-of-print rarities like this one and The Ten Commandments remain tied up until licenses expire (or at least until lawyers find new loopholes that may open when a huge publisher like Famous Music is sold!!).
Of course... this all presupposes someone at Sony will listen. They have been tough to crack, but it can't be worse that it was with Paramount... that was as bad as it could get.

Well, then would this mean that Young Sherlock Holmes might actually get a *real* commercial release? And heck yeah, Indy music. There we go. Make it happen! Also, I honestly wouldn't mind having some music from Beverly Hills Cop. That'd be some campy fun.[Message edited by Jeron on 05-31-2007]

Um, Famous Music is a PUBLISHING company. This deal has nothing to do with Paramount's MUSIC masters or those rights, it only has to do with their publishing rights.

Viacom's selling off one aspect of licensing remains interesting. I apologize for my excitement when later posting about things that have more to do with mechanical master licensing. But either way, I am excited to see this. I think it will lead, directly or indirectly, to some promising opportunities for little labels.[Message edited by PeterK on 05-31-2007]

How is it that Jeron and Bri can turn a wonderful, intellectually stimulating discussion about the Music Business into an episode of Romper Room fatser than James Horner can throw in his tradmark 4 note "evil" theme into any given piece of music?
