Hi, I'm a psychology student at the University of Colorado and am conducting a research project on music's effect on mood. I need to find some music to play in each of 2 experimental conditions (Happy & Sad) and was hoping people had suggestions for what to use. Each piece of music needs to clearly convey the particular mood. So if anyone knows of some music that is clearly happy/uplifting or sad/depressing then PLEASE let me know! Thanks so much!

    Brittany

I think, (in addition to things like "Ode to Joy"), you should probably consider..

    "Schindler's List"
    "Home Alone"
    "Dances With Wolves"
    "The Great Escape"
    "Henry V" (Doyle)
    "Rudy"

There are plenty others, of course, but I picked these because of their variance on psychological "highs" and "lows", at least musically speaking.

For some reason, I was thinking about this thread this morning.

How about Donnie Brasco by Patrick Doyle? Heartbreaking in the film. Poor Lefty.

The same theme played differently to convey varying moods would also be interesting.A good example would be the soundtrack to Scent of a Woman. The theme for Al Pacino's character when played slowly throughout the early scenes well illustrates his melancholy mood.At the end when he has successfully defended his friend Charlie at a disciplinary hearing, the same theme is played loudly and triumphantly. Also, for happy and upbeat you can't go wrong with John Williams'1941 and Raiders of the Lost Ark marches.

EXTREME VOMIT-INDUCING HAPPINESS: Hans Zimmer's Radio Flyer should drive any sane person up the wall, like if that shroom sequence in Tenacious D In: The Pick Of Destiny was for serious and not pretend; makes me wake up in cold sweats at night, which is usually followed by me running into the wall in pitch black and being knocked out for several hours--it's a vicious cycle.

Personally the CD I find most cheers me up is Music From Carry On Films. The City of Prague do a pretty good job on this one.

As for depressing - pretty much any Howard Shore album. COPLAND and some of his earlier Cronenberg scores in particular (though not THE FLY, which is big and bold enough to not be depressing).

The only CD that's made me feel physically ill while listening was Dr Who At The Radiophonic Workshop Vol 2, including "music" from the Pertwee era.
