Making a short film and I am looking for some creepy amibient score to feature. Something along the lines of Beltrami's Omen score but even more ambient than that. I need creepy sounds.

I've always thought "The Fury" was particularly disturbing. But if you want something more contemporary, Jablonsky's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is just noisily eerie.

I saw a short film from a film school recently that had a truly chilling score performed on prepared instrumentation. Well nicely put together. It was called KEVIN, and the composer was one Patrick Nellestein. Perhaps he has a website?

EDMUND BUTT's THE DARK is really effective.

Btw, from your description, what you need is Japanese Horror stuff. Like the original RINGU scores, or the original DARKWATER.

John Williams' Images is definitely the creepiest score I have ever heard. But perhaps the best ambient creepy stuff is in some parts of Goldsmith's Omen scores, Bernard Herrmann's Psycho and Howard Shore's scores Silence of the Lambs and Se7en. Thomas Newman's Murder(in four parts) from Road to Perdition is also atmospheric and creepy as hell.

Nice, lots of ideas, thanks a lot. I have been looking around and tell me what you think of Jablonsky's Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Young's The Grudge? I read that The Grudge is really minimalistic and is just a collection of creepy sounds and musical ideas with no particular melody(not like that overplayed cheezy halloween CD everyone uses for parties). That's what i am kind of shooting for.

My recommendations are always as follows: any horror score by Christopher Young (they're all great), Alien 3 and/or In Dreams by Goldenthal, Alien by Goldsmith (or what's left of it), The Cell by Howard Shore.

    Enjoy!

The scores / composers mentioned in the above post are absolutely marvellous indeed although i believe that by the BackToTheFutureFan's sayings, Japanese horror stuff (as i already said) or even Young's THE GRUDGE (the 1st not the 2nd one) or even stuff like JOHN FRIZZELL's STAY ALIVE is what he's actually looking for.

Whatever the *@%YU)!*% music Kubrick employs in 'The Shining'.... Yikes it's scary, and so effective. I'd never really want to listen to it by itself, but it works wonders in the movie.

Try some of the solo albums from composer Simon Fisher Turner if you need some strange effects and ambient sounds.

    Here's a thought

Don't put any music in. Shoot and edit the film, find a composer whos work you admire and have the composer score the film from scratch. See what happens. You might get something unique....

Wouldn't that be something. I bet any one of us here would love to have something scored for us personally. Thanks for all the feedback. Looking into the Grudge, or i might just do a little myself. I wish I could find the shining.

I agree with "The Shining" but also John Corligniano's (sp?) score to "Altered States".

Well, would you? It's not like there aren't composers on these boards.

I am a college student making $9.50 an hour as a drafter with bills to pay. I have no money to commission a composer. And I wouldn't think that a composer can afford scoring a film for next to nothing. I imagine they have their own expenses.

While THE CHANGELING may be the scariest score of all-time, Michael Levinas' "Ouverture Pour Une Fête Étrange" is the scariest piece of music I've heard. It makes Goldenthal's ALIEN 3 sound like Edelman's KINDERGARTEN COP!

    I agree with Incanus.
Howard Shore's score to "Se7en" is one of my all-time favorites. "Greed Photos pt.1", "The Apartment" and "Books/Phone" are some of the creepiest tracks I've heard.
They have this impression that John Doe is always watching from the shadows. Raised hairs on the back of your neck type-stuff.

"The Silence of the Lambs" is a close 2nd.
"The Asylum" and "Lector Escapes" are the best on there, to me.

And "From Hell" always offers a few chills.
