So Dino De Laurentiis is still milking this franchise? This time with the director of The Girl with the Pearl Earring?! Now that movie was respectable, but the trailer and previews make this out to be in the Hostel vain. And a young Hannibal Lector and the audience has to sit through the explanation of why he's such an evil but charming guy; de-mystified cinema villians? Count me out. The one thing promising that I can admit all of the Hannibal Lector movies have had is a great score, from Manhunter on through its remake, the Brett Ratner-directed Red Dragon (still a great listen). Both IMDb and FSM list Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi as the composers. Although I've never heard of Eshkeri, I greatly admire Umebayashi; though the choice of a Japanese composer known for his contributions to Wushu-style martial arts epics and amazing Wong Kar-Wai "affairs" seems like an extremely odd choice. Too bad Peter Webber (the director, next to tackle a remake of Barbarella for the producer?!) couldn't bring up his rolodex and nab Desplat for a chance to deliver a really promising score. But, we'll see how it all pans out.

Any news on a score release?

They should have ended it with Silence of the Lambs...

In this case, it very well may be. I'd figure De Laurentiis would want to tap Decca for another release after they handeled the Hannibal and Red Dragon scores to great reviews - aside from Hannibal's tacked-on Hopkins dialogue - and good sales. I have no reason or need to see the film, but I'd be interested in hearing Umebayashi's music.

And Stargate, I wholeheartedly agree. Apparently, Thomas Harris was asked to revisit the character in the book Hannibal Rising specifically for a film treatment; I believe they were going to co-incide in release. Too bad, Brian Cox made such a great impression as Hannibal.

I want to hear Umebayashi's score too... but not in the movie. Time is too precious... will.not.waste.time.watching.this!

I want there to be a CD release; in that case no news on a CD release is NOT good news! Argh.... but there are always strong second chances with the DVD release.

Reviews will be posted overnight Thursday, that is, if it was screened for critics last night...

I came across a short news item on the recording sessions for Hannibal Rising at the official site of the London Metroploitan Orchestra. Not a whole lot of info, but still somewhat interesting:

    http://www.lmo.co.uk/?page=news&id=84

Umebayashi's not one of my favorite Japanese composers, though he has written a number of scores I do like a lot, and including this film there are at least two recent scores of his I'm hoping will get released. Haven't heard anything by Eshkeri yet, but he worked quite often with Kamen and Shearmur didn't he? I also seem to remember hearing that his score to Layer Cake was pretty good as well.

Considering the last good movie with Lecter was Silence of the Lambs, and Harris's Hannibal remains the worst novel I've ever read, I don't think I'll be seeing this movie. The horrid trailers sure don't help either.

    NP: Kinsey (Carter Burwell)

It's good to hear of his work with Kamen and Shearmur. Was his Layer Cake score rejected or did he work with Lisa Gerrard on the music. I greatly enjoyed the music in that film but it didn't seem to fit for a Hannibal story. And I'm reading some test reviews now that apparently lead me to believe that Lector was trained as a samurai by his aunt (played by Gong Li) during some point in his life. I know exactly: WHAT?!

    NP> Dario Marianelli's The Brother's Grimm (*****/*****)

He must have worked with Gerrard. Looks like there are at least a couple cues of his on the soundtrack. He also scored Uli Edel's Ring of the Nibelungs, released in the US with this incredibly generic title Dark Kingdom - The Dragon King. I think I caught a bit of that on the Sci-Fi Channel a few months back, but can't really recall the score.

Lecter trained as a samurai growing up? Jeez, maybe they should have cast Christian Bale and gotten Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard to score it instead of Umebayashi and Eshkeri!

    NP: The Fountain (Clint Mansell)

The fact that Peter Webber is directing this - I didn't know that - makes me more curious, and if Desplat was scoring it, there's a slight chance I might actually go and see it. But the CD will have to do for now, and only if reviews seem positive.

And only if there is a CD, which at the moment there doesn't seem to be.

The only thing that shore has done that is good is LOTR (Must admit I don't own the score to Se7en but it did work well with the movie)

So I'm guessing LotR is the only thing you've seen and/or own that he's scored?

That's absolutely the most absurd statement I've heard in my 21 years of life.

    Big time

Well, actually 20 but since my mom's allowed to lie about her age I figured, "What the hell? Age equals experience" . . . and I've had a few drinks in my time, and you HAVE to be over twenty-one to enjoy a refreshing alcoholic beverage.
