    W000t.

Direct from moviemusic.com warehouse in Florida, the newest score from Brian Tyler arrives at my house *ON THE RELEASE DATE*

Gotta love mail order. I remember when I tried to buy the Babylon 5 tv series on DVD at Borders, and they'd be like, "it was just released today, it won't be in for a couple weeks"

    Gotta love online ordering/pre-ordering.

Well, I've heard comparisons to CHILDREN OF DUNE, looking at the liner notes, the orchestra only consists of a string section, an oboe and some horns (I.e. not a lot of wind instruments)

and the back credits Tyler as "piano, percussion and "stringed instruments"

As for how it sounds...umm...I'm kind of behind on my listening queue...soo..I'll get back to you!?!

I'm listening to the end credit track just for PeterK.

Some nice strings with acoustic guitar chords backing...then another acoustic guitar joins in w/ some nifty finger picking...some cool tympani rolls (I assume elctronically produced as no percussionist was credited?) Some ethnic percussion joins in. Guitar fades away and strings crescendo into a signature Brian Tyler melody somewhat like Annapolis then joined by what could be an attempt at a synth choir, or just a cool synth patch...horns and oboe come in w/ new melody, strings back up. More tympani rolling into the trademark Brian Tyler crescendo/decrescendo eighth note pattern...transition into a beautiful minor keyed theme, which sounds influenced somewhat by parts of Lawrence of Arabia and Stargate...tympani roll into more of the same, but bigger and bolder. End back with the cut from the beginning of the track w/o the acoustic guitar backing though not much of an ending, kind of just ends/fades.

In other words, hells yeah, score of the year, but I can't think of very many good ones from this year anyway.

(But I like virtually everything that Mr. Tyler has put out, sans Big Empty, so i'm probably biased.)

Wow, I emailed Brian about the percussion yesterday and this was just his response:

    quote:
    Hey there TJ,

Almost everything was live (no-electronic) on the soundtrack. In
fact, I do have a set of timpani here at my studio that I played
along with a huge amount of other percussion instruments. I think
some electronic elements must have survived but the vast majority I
played live. As for the orchestra, I conducted the Hollywood Studio
    Symphony.

I hope you enjoy the soundtrack!

    Best,
    Brian

This reminds me of Harry Knowles (of AICN fame) recent name dropping on his Oscar nomination news story . . . "I just got off the phone with Guillermo Del Toro."

But I'd probably trust TJ more than Harry Knowles; even I've gotten a response from the likes of Brian Tyler and Marco Beltrami (thanks of course to Jeff).

Yeah, I used that form on the official site, I didn't mean to imply that I know the man personally or something like that.

    that is probably true Peter.

Even with basic music like rock, it could be crap but just cause you know the guys, you think its kind of cool.

Sounds like my experience with friends in local bands throughout the local Atlanta area. Very few of them actually play the music that I enjoy outside of film music but I still get out there and support them. I'm even in talks to do one of my friend's music videos but the band is that screeching scream-o crap that gets unlimited play on the radio around here. But hey, I gotta eat!

I hate it when I read a film music fan call another genre of music "crap", then whine when someone doesn't appreciate film music.

Nuts, I happen to love screamo, emo, post-hardcore, whatever you want to call these splintered genres, as much as Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer or Elliot Goldenthal!
