Intended in a spirit of fun:- Horner on Ron Howard for THE MISSING - 'he didn't want a western score...'
- Ridley Scott on GLADIATOR - 'I didn't want a typical sword and sandal epic score...'
- Christopher Gordon on MASTER AND COMMANDER - 'Peter (Weir) said he didn't want 'film music', and especially not the swashbuckling adventure score this sort of movie would normally receive.' (Though in fairness to Weir, he DID tell them what he wanted after that.)
- Alexandre Desplat after talking with Stephen Frears about THE QUEEN: 'You can’t go too dark, too suspenseful, too funny or too sweet'
- Murray Gold on VANITY FAIR (tv) - 'he said he didn't want to hear any saxophones...'
- Alan Silvestri on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - 'they didn't want any flutes...'
- David Shire on THE CONVERSATION - 'he said he didn't want an orchestra.'
- Jerry Goldsmith on PLANET OF THE APES / PATTON - 'he said 'no piccolos'!'
- Alexandre Desplat on THE PAINTED VEIL - 'he didn't want any Chinese music or instrumentation...'
- Steve Zaillain on ALL THE KING'S MEN - 'I said I didn't want anything like what he'd done before.'
- Michael Nyman on THE PIANO - 'She said she 'didn't want any of that Greenaway crap.' '
- David Julyan on THE PRESTIGE - 'Chris said he didn't want a period score.'
- Patrick Doyle on ERAGON - ' (They) didn't want any 'classical-sounding' music...'
- Bernard Herrmann on (an unnamed project he rejected) - 'They said they didn't want good music.'
- Richard Thompson on GRIZZLY MAN - 'He (Werner Herzog) said it wasn't about what he wanted. He felt Tim (the subject of GRIZZLY MAN) would have liked my music in the film.'
- Danny Elfman on SPIDERMAN 2 - 'He said he didn't want any new music. Just re-enactments of cues from the first and other films.'
- Lennie Niehaus - 'He said if he'd been given Oscars already for producing and directing, odds were on they'd sooner give him an Oscar for composing music than for acting! Three strikes, we said, and he's out... Then he said Million Dollar Baby didn't count because they messed up the paperwork.'

You should see what happens when they ask for a tea or coffee in the production office...Ryan

There are a lot of great laughs in there Franz, especially the Horner comment and the one from Herrmann. Pure class that man had!

(Though in fairness to Weir, he DID tell them what he wanted after that.)<<I loved the fact that they used Vaughn's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis on that film. One of my favorite pieces of music. Another "swashbuckling" score probably would have been as dull as hell.

This thread reminds me of a story Vincent Schiavelli tells in the behind-the-scenes doc on the Amadeus Director's Cut DVD. At the very beginning of the film, Schiavelli is outside and walks up to the door of a building. He said that on the first take, Milos Forman started yelling at him, "No! No! What are you doing?! That's completely wrong! Television is ruining you, Vincent!!" On the second take Schiavelli said he walked up to the door in exactly the same way as he did before, but this time Forman said, "Much, much better, very good, Vincent!"I think sometimes directors just need to make themselves think they have absolute control over every single aspect of the film, even if deep down they know that's not quite true.
