    So far...

    1492: Conquest Of Paradise (Vangelis)
    Children Of Dune (Tyler)
    Apocalypto (Horner)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Zimmer)

I don't normally regret purchases, but I regret the POTC purchase... not a good score. Lucky I got it for $5 as well as 1492.

The first of the year for me:

    MISHIMA - Philip Glass
    - This one is a complete delight for me. I've never heard the music nor have I seen Paul Schrader's film (though I am a fan of he and his brother's writing). Being a fledgling-Glass fan, a new discovery is always note-worthy; and I firmly believe this is some of his best stuff. The string sections are performed by Kronos Quartet, and, as always, don't disappoint. It's also a very diverese score, with Glass reaching a lot of range musically. Any other fans out there?

I'm also wishing I had remembered that Thomas Newman's The Good German and Alexandre Desplat's The Painted Veil were released today as I wasn't really looking for anything new (January and Feburary are always filled with dreadful films anyway).

    NP> Glass' Mishima (*****/*****)

MISHIMA is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Glass's film scoring. (NAQOYQATSI and KUNDUN are probably the other peaks.)

There's one track on there that could best be described as minimalist karaoke... with whining violin solo over electric guitar and band arpeggiation... really odd, dangerously infectious.

I agree on the NAQOYQATSI and especially Kundun - which I purchased nearly half a year ago and it hasn't left my disc changer except for the occasional car trip! I believe the track your refrencing is "Osamu's Theme: Kyoko's House"; it's one that never fails to bring a smile to my face with its inventiveness.

I'm not that excited about Kundun, but I agree about Naqoyqatsi: It's amazing, and doesn't have do hide behind the monolithic first score of the trilogy.
