Hello everyone,
The last Film Music on the Web update for 2006 has gone online. Fifty plus soundtrack reviews again deck our halls, and I hope they'll be of interest. Our specially recommended albums this time around including re-recordings of western classics True Grit and Red River, James Newton Howard's Lady in the Water, and the especially unusual score by Borut Krzisnik for Peter Greenaway's A Life in Suitcases. Also recommended are Lalo Schifrin's Abominable, Francis Shaw's Ivor Novello winner Evil, John Powell's United 93 : http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/index.htm
Also reviewed in this edition are Superman Returns, X-Men 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, The DaVinci Code (we're running behind!), Desplat's Les Corps Impatients, Frankel's Curse of the Wolf, Gabriel Yared's animated film music, Factotum, Tuomas Kantelinen's Mother of Mine, Battlestar Galactica 2, John Williams' Checkmate, Bernard Herrmann's The Wrong Man, Debbie Wiseman's Haunted, Manderlay and many more.
We also mourn the late Basil Poledouris, whose contribution to American film music's Bronze Age was inestimable: http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/2006/dec06/tribute_poledouris.html
Our edition went to print too late to include a retrospective of the late Shirley Walker, who sadly passed away last week.
Not to be flippant, but we also say farewell to ourselves. Yes, Film Music on the Web is closing its door for the foreseeable future - which is likely to extend into the unforeseeable future. It's a lot of work to pass through the hands of two people, and now that those who've paid the way in the past are rolling back their support, this seems an unfortunate but necessary time to celebrate seven years of reviewing. I've only been part of the site the last year and a half, but it's been a good time, and no doubt I'll find another web-based soapbox to muse (however layman-like) on the subject: http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/2006/dec06/ed_goodbye.html
Fortunately seven years worth of soundtrack reviews will remain available online archived, and I hope those of you with an interest in the subject will find those of use.
Thankyou to everyone who has contributed either directly or indirectly to the site along the way. Composers, readers, family, friends, students, teachers, soundtrack message board sages - you've all contributed in your own way, some of you without realising it. Feel free to get in touch with me on any matter relating to the site or just to talk about film music - a good conversation on the subject is rare and always welcome.
Regards,
Michael McLennan http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/index.htm

I'm very sorry that this site must close. I wish it could be different. It is our loss to lose such a website that does such a fine job of reviewing our beloved film music.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've been following the site since you joined it, and I enjoyed it a great deal. Glad to see that the archive of reviews will remain online.
