Time to kickoff the last collection thread for 2006!

    THE PROPHECY - David Williams
    - I remember very little things about this movie, I remember Viggo Mortensen as a superbly evil Satan and the fact that Christopher Walken was in it. Surprisingly, I picked up the score (and cheap too, $5.99!) based on some reviews I read late in the Summer; one of them was by Tom over at GoldenScores. I don't know what I was suspecting when I put this into my car's CD player as I drove home; but it certainly surprised me. This is honestly one of the most beautiful and captivating pieces of choral scoring I've heard. And it has just the right balance of thrilling and brooding music. I'll call it the score that Zimmer wishes his DaVinci Code score was (surprising for me to say that, I love that score too). "All About Fate" opens the score on a haunting chorus and is, in itself, enough reason to at least hear this score.

SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW - Edward Shearmur
    - I'm growing tired of these: scores that sound like a particular temp track that you just can't shake the similarities. If you've heard Shearmur's score (keep in mind, I find Shearmur to be a great composer after The Count of Monte Cristo and Reign of Fire) and anything with the name "Superman" or "Star Wars" in it than you undoubtedly know what tempp was used. All in all, this is a mediocre release. It reminds me of JNH's King Kong. I'm sure I would have loved this early in my collecting career.

    King Arhur - Zimmer

Bombast with no variation. First listen was ok. I hope it grows on me. No tracks stood out. Maybe I missed something.

    Armageddon - Rabin

A few tracks on here are worth the money. Probably Rabin's best. Long Distnace Goodbye/Landing and Launch are the highlights.

    THE DEPARTED - Howard Shore
    - Have I made my love of Shore apparent enough in the past? Sure, I hardly post on the LotR Package Update thread; but that's because I actually look forward to everything Howard Shore is involved with. I'm not just into hobbits and wizards. Once again he proves himself and I can feel good about claiming him to be amongst my top 5 favorite composers ever. This is an interesting score. The thing I enjoy most about Shore is the fact that he can move between music styles almost chameleon-like. Outside of his LotR repetoire, his work is extremely diverse. This shows what he's capable of. The tango-inspired score he provides for Scorcese's exhilerating film captures a sense of cat-and-mouse that is rarely ever achieved in scores of this nature. The primary guitars are superb and its great to see the great SNL-alum G.E. Smith partnering with Shore again. Definitely recommended for Shore fans and fans of the film. You others might have trouble adjusting to the non-Middle Earth sound of the whole package.

Some of you guys must spend your entire checks for a month on all these.

I remember when I was such a cheap bargain hunter and got so much for my money. Well, things kept going up and even though I still get plenty of bargains, they just arent nearly as cheap as they used to be.

    This months purchases so far:

    1. Taras Bulba-Waxman
    2. FSMs Undefeated/Hombre-interested in hearing the trailer music for Hombre. I heard this music when I saw the promo once many years ago and vaguely remember it. One, want to see if its the same music I heard then and see if I can identify it.
    and
    3. 36 Hours great piano work by Tiomkin
    4. Predator 2-Silvestri goes wild on the bongos-some of this is pretty good
    5. Frieds I Bury the Living, etc. Return of Dracula so on
    6. Korngold's Sea Hawk and other themes, I have had the LP for a zillion years, but never got around to getting this until now, it has some extra music over the old LP
    7. Capricorn One-Intrada-was very fortunate to find this and I did not pay ebay prices either for it. LOL.

Some more to follow later this month.

    J.

When I look back at my checking history, its really amazing how I've pretty much evened out in how much I've spent and how much I've sold...granted I sold all of my guitar effect pedals which helped immensely.

But considering I haven't had a job since I graduated high school (June 2004, started working Sept 2003), I think I've fared really, really, well. After I graduate from college and move out, and have to actually pay for the cost of living, i don't know how I will be able to keep up this hobby, without selling everything I have and simply relying on the digital copies I make.

    Another this month...

    The Omen (Beltrami)

A very good score. Reminded me why I got into this music in the first place. Beltrami is the next generation big time composer.

    ERAGON - Patrick Doyle
    - It pains me to say this, but this is Doyle at his mediocre best. Certainly given the subjwect matter, he did his best. But he's more than capable of delivering a timeless and classic score to a abhorrent motion picture (Frankenstein comes immediately to mind). I noticed some of these same remarks on the Eragon thread and I'm agreeing with them. Granted, this is still great music and much more magical than most composers could accomplish; but it lacks that certain Doyle-greatness. Here's to hoping it grows with age!

PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER - Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, and Reinhold Heil
    - Seriously, where did this come from?! I'm creating a thread for this masterpiece.
