Have any of you guys ever personally ranked all the James Bond songs? I am curious to know where you think Chris Cornell's version sits.

This could be a good discussion, maybe if we start from the very bottom with the worst Bond song ever and work our way up......

Also, does anyone know if the film version is available anywhere? I'd love to add it into my playlist before I burn the extended itunes album onto 2 discs. Thanks!

I don't think I'm familiar enough with all of the bond themes to answer this yet. I have an afinity for Bono and Edge's Goldeneye (sung by Tina Turner) and McCartney's Live and Let Die. I think Cornell's is up there though. Good tune.

I'm going to think on this while I work. Though, listening to "You Know My Name", as much as I like the music in it, I don't think Cornell's vocals fit. I would prefer a male artist like David Bowie or Thom Yorke . . . hell, even Robbie Williams.

But the music? It's great!

Although when I think 'Bond Song' I usually think of brassy music and sultry vocals, like Goldfinger, Man with the Golden Gun, Goldeneye and Thunderball, I love the latest addition, and I think that along with Live and Let Die they have their own little niche as great Bond Rock songs. As songs per se I also like All Time High, Nobody Does it Better and You Only Live Twice, although maybe they lack that Bond sound.

You Only Live Twice is one of the greatest Bond songs. Nancy Sinatra nailed it. You Know My Name is up there, though. I honestly think you have to divide it up into three eras: First Gen (ex. Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, You Only Live Twice), Second Gen (ex. The Living Daylights, Live and Let Die, A View to a Kill), and our current era, Third Gen. I won't bother ranking the First Gen songs as I think they are all wonderful. Anything Barry participated in Second Gen is exceptional, too. The Living Daylights and A View to a Kill are probably my favorites there. Third Gen, you'll find my ranking below:

Surrender
You Know My Name (film version)
The World is Not Enough
GoldenEye
Die Another Day
Only Myself to Blame
The Experience of Love

It doesn't quite sound like a Bond song to me, but I've grown to like it. And it works extremely well with the opening sequence.

It's great to see this song getting good vibes from around the film music world.

"You Know My Name" is masterfully constructed. The more I've deconstructed it (I know, I'm obsessing), the more brilliant it has become. I can hear now that the opening guitar riff is really a compressed version of the James Bond guitar theme. Later, the melody for the verse (plays during the line, "If you take a life, do you know what you'll get?") is another variation on the main James Bond guitar theme melody...the intervals used are one and the same, and the way in which those intervals are repeated also have a very similar arc.

In the song's chorus, (during the line "Arm yourself because no one else here will save you") the melody is now outlining the same ascending chord line that plays underneathe the main James Bond guitar theme. All the while the You Know My Name chord progression outlines both the main James Bond theme's chord structure as well as On Her Majesty's Secret service's chord progression.

The point is, what some have unfortunately dismissed as "some random alternative sounding pop song" is in reality one of the most cleverly crafted "prequel" song/themes of all time. Every bit of it was born from a pre-existing idea from James Bond's rich musical history. And therefore, as this new theme then works its way through the underscore, it fits seamlessly and foreshadows all the right moments in all the right ways.

This is easily my favorite of the "new generation" Bond songs and ranks up with the best of all 21 for its effectiveness.

-Brendan

I enjoy it, but it doesn't match my two favorites, Live and Let Die or The World Is Not Enough.

It's not as good as the Christmas tree song from OHMSS! That's right, I'll be here all night.

I have noticed this as well as the opening riff . I'll have to listen more closely for the other similarities you mentioned. This song is a blast to listen to, and seeing these details pop up is wonderful. I just hope the film version makes itself available!

If you are serious then I agree with you, yes big shock I know.

I think it ranks up there with Madonna and Sheryl Crowe as being a less than memorable song. Not as awful as DAD but not too good.

Or!
