    Film critic David Ehrenstein writes:
    quote:
Saw it last night. Not bad at all, but not likely to win much audience or critical support due to grimness of plot. Brilliant score by Thomas Newman clearly designed to invoke the great days of Korngold and Steiner. Haven't heard this many music cues on a score since Far From Heaven.

I always thought Thomas Newman was a weird fit for this movie as I sort of consider him the antithesis of the classic Hollywood style that Soderbergh is clearly trying to evoke, but perhaps I underestimated him. I'm certainly intrigued.

Anyone know if this score has a record label or release date yet?

Maybe he is emulating Alfred Newman, which would be very interesting and quite lovely.

God I love that poster soooo much. Sure it's a straight riff on Casablanca's one-sheet; but damn a poster like that is a sight for sore eyes. It's a great joy to hear that Thomas Newman has evoked some Golden Age charm out of this one. I thought Mark Isham was the only one up to the task.

You don't get much closer to Golden Age scoring than Newman's Meet Joe Black, whose string sound very much evokes his father.

Here's an article from the NY Times where they discuss the old style Hollywood filmmaking style that Steven Soderberg used on THE GOOD GERMAN.

I agree with Southall--I absolutely love the "Meet Joe Black" score.
And to answer the question if he is emulating his father, I believe he is.

    This was noted on clooneystudio.com:

"Tom drops a hint about his score for The Good German, saying that it will be a twist on the Old Hollywood style of film music, a step into his father's [Alfred Newman] shoes."

    Here is the interview:
