    FRANZ WAXMAN: A Centenary Celebration

    REBECCA
    SUNSET BOULEVARD
    PEYTON PLACE

    Joel McNeely • Frederic Talgorn
    Royal Scottish National Orchestra

2006 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary composer Franz Waxman. Waxman was one of film music’s earliest pioneers, creating the landmark score for 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein. His music would be heard in such classic films as Rebecca, The Philadelphia Story, Rear Window, The Spirit of St. Louis, Taras Bulba, Stalag 17, Sorry, Wrong Number, Mr. Skeffington and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Waxman was the only composer to ever win the Best Original Score Oscar in two consecutive years, for A Place In The Sun and Sunset Boulevard. His score for Peyton Place features one of the most beautiful and famous love themes of all time.

The commemoration of the Waxman Centenary is being noted by concerts and events all around the world, including a special tribute by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills and, during December and January, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

To join in this special celebration and honor this great genius, we have assembled this deluxe package containing three of Waxman’s all-time classic films scores – Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Best Picture Academy Award-winning film Rebecca, Billy Wilder’s Academy Award-winning masterpiece Sunset Boulevard (1950) and the scandalous 1957 romance Peyton Place.

All scores are newly recorded with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. This specially priced set contains over three hours of music by 12-time Oscar-nominated composer Franz Waxman.

    Limited Edition of 2500 Sets

    Catalog #: 302 066 777 2
    Release Date: 12/05/06

Don't they have anything better to invest their money in, rather than limiting the unlimited and readily available?

*shrugs* I don't have any of them, so if it's at a discount, I'm all over it!

these have all been previously released as separate albums. All worth while. I have all three, so I have no need to buy this set.

The difference being that The Omen Trilogy was just a rerelease in a boxed set at a lower price, which is regularly available:
    http://www.varesesarabande.com/details.asp?pid=302%2D066%2D687%2D2

    Happens all the time.

But this Waxman set is a limited release of albums which themselves are not in limited status. So... what's so special about it? Oh right. It's limited. COOL! Whatever.

I imagine that actually what's special is that it's cheap, not that it's limited. That Varese are giving novice Waxman fans a chance to own three of his finest scores at a cut-down price is to be applauded. Yet again, the (veiled) venom in this thread is truly bizarre.

Personally, Waxman is one of my favourite Golden Agers, but I still don't have ANY of the three soundtracks in question (I may have a suite or two, but that's it). So I would gladly have bought them if I weren't on such a strict purchasing "diet".

If you already have them...fine. But it's still great news to those who DO NOT and can afford it.

I don't think anybody is spewing venom, but we're all probably a bit confused. The first three discs of the Jerry Goldsmith at Fox thing come to mind again.

This release is presented as a limited edition, so I assume it's aimed at the film score fan. However, what film score fan doesn't have at least one of these recordings?! Waxman fans like myself probably already own all three of them. I guess some people like Thor who have been procrastinating will buy this release, but some of us simply feel that Varese pulling a Silva Screen is a bit disappointing.

This makes no logical sense. For all you know they are simply only producing 2500 units of this box set so that afterwards peopel will have to pay full price for the origiinal releases. Plus.....how do you konw the omen trilogy set didn't have the same amount of units?

Just cause it has a number next to it doesn't make it any more special.

    It's not like it's a club release.

I think you're reading too much into that... I see it more as them saying "this is a special offer - you can buy these three albums for a special price - but only for a short while! - after that you'll have to buy them separately if you want them" - they're doing a GOOD thing, and getting shot down in flames!

If "yawn - don't they have anything better to invest their money in?" or "what's so special about it? Oh right. It's limited. COOL! Whatever." isn't veiled venom then I don't know what is (except that it probably isn't veiled).

I don't have any of these discs so I would imagine this would be a good offer for me.

    EXACTLY!

Hopefully Peter has a link through the store sometime closer to the release date.

Those responses look to me like the result of boredom, not anger or predation. No snake ever bit someone because it was bored.

I agree with the positive interpretation of this release -- I think there are plenty of film score fans who don't have these scores. But I don't see anything here that qualifies as venom. Horner and Zimmer discussions, those are venomous. At worst, this thread is just verbalized apathy.

I'm quite interested in this set! I've got the Marco Polo release of Rebecca and am pretty happy with it,is the Varese one better? Does anybody have both who can tell me?

That's a great bargain to those who own none or one of these titles.

I'm wondering how it's packaged... The words "box set" make me believe it's a limited edition sleeve around the existing releases. I have to admit that it's a clever and probably successful way to dump boxes of CDs that are gathering dust in the warehouse.
