    INTRADA Announces:

    SATURN 3
Composed and Conducted by ELMER BERNSTEIN
    INTRADA Special Collection Volume 36

The late 70s and early 80s were a renaissance period for the science
fiction genre, spurred on by the remarkable success of STAR WARS. One
such entry was the 1980 film SATURN 3. The remote Saturn 3 botanical
research station, named after its location on Saturn's third mood, finds
Adam and Alex (Kirk Douglas and Farah Fawcett) enjoying solitude and
romance, until bad guy Benson (Harvey Keitel) shows up to wreak havoc
and turns the station's robot, Hector, against them. Soon the thriller
switches into high gear as Hector is stalking Adam and Alex through the
    botanical station's warren-like biomechanical corridors.

Composer Elmer Bernstein, who had scored sci-fi early in his career
(ROBOT MONSTER, CAT WOMEN ON THE MOON), had not scored a horror film per
se. SATURN 3 plays as much horror as it does sci-fi, a sub genere
revitalized the year before with ALIEN. Bernstein's brilliant effort
went largely unheard in the final film. He wrote for a massive orchestra
including extra brass, divisi string parts, a stunning array of
percussion players, large male chorus, solo soprano, piano, xylophone,
and harp. The score ranges from complex, experimental writing for
strings to explosive percussion riffs, from delicate harp arpeggios and
haunting solo soprano lines to powerful brass fanfares and dynamic
hammer-and-anvil rhythms. Saturn 3 was probably the most challenging
    score in Bernstein’s impressive repertoire.

This INTRADA release features the complete score to SATURN 3 in the
original chronological sequence that was intended, mastered from the
    original stereo two-track masters.

This release is limited to 2500 copies.

So in a way it is Heavy Metal as well, as some had guessed.

I'd forgotten just how much I like that Taarna theme. As soon as I heard the audio clip of the end credits, I knew I'd be ordering this one.

I wish some one these special releases would be for unreleased scores instead of already released scores and giving us an extra 10 minutes. I don't need those 10-15 minutes that much.

Give me something we haven't heard before.

Saturn 3 is not a released score, at least on CD. This will have far better sound than the cassette version and contains unused cues.

But this is the first legitimate release of the score on CD, isn't it?

Peter, it's safe to assume you're filling out pre-orders now and that Buysoundtrax won't be holding a majority of these for ransom, right? I'm not able to order one right off the pre-order batting line-up, but I was wondering if you'd have a few in back order for late hitters like myself.

The score for this is very good and the stalking music in it is exc.

I laughed big time when I saw Kirk's nude wrestling scene in this. He got to show off his body in his sixties. LOL.

Can you tell me where in there did I say anything about bootlegs and supporting them? I have no idea if this score has been bootlegged before or not. I just know it was released in some compacity before.
    Never even heard the score.

I only have 3 Bernsteins scores in my collection and that is Ghostbusters, Stripes and Wild Wild West.

Then why are you complaining about a legit release? How'd you even konw it was released before? I just don't see the point of you complaining that Intrada chose to release this title, that evidently, a lot of people have been wanting....

You have Wild, Wild West but not Magnificent 7? You should fix that right away. Great Escape if you can find it reasonable as well.

I had to read the description carefully, but at first, it sounded like a tropical version of Carpenter's "The Thing".

This has never been released in a legitimate form at all. Most people have never gotten any of the bootlegs, which were reportedly of bad sound anyway.

The only thing of this score that has ever been released in any form is the LP of Heavy Metal, only because that score featured a theme carried over from this one (that wasn't used in the film).

Therefore this constitutes an album of completely unreleased material.

So Jeff78, what, exactly, is your point?

This post likely means nothing, but I recently watched Roll Bounce. Mix a little of Clarke's retro score with Bernstein's music from Saturn 3 and I is stuck in a groove. Gimme some skates. Size 17.

I have about 37 CDs not counting these two I just ordered on him. Also about 50 LPs and 25 tapes and some 45s, but there is one I would really like yet-the CD for Heavy Metal. I have the LP and the LP for Spies LIke Us. I recently got the Sweet Smell of Success LP really cheap and it has that great opening cue "The Street". Reminds me some of Rat Race. One of my favs on him are those two cuts he did for his son on Rough Riders. Great score by both.

    Looking forward to Saturn 3.

Another fav of mine is that club release of CAst a Giant Shadow and the the one for Scalphunters. Both great. That Cast CD has great sound. The old LP from UA was like many of them back then, didnt sound too good.

REcappiing from my earlier posts on this. I like the score a lot except for those two disco clips. The rest of the score is quite good. Especially good are the stalking cues and that opening and closing. Very powerful. Still laugh about the nude wrestling scene with Douglas fighting Keitel. A mid 60s man wrestling nude. LOL. Lots of star power there. J.
