Still working on mine for this month. Several to come though. Just ordered these two:1. This Island Earth-Salter, Stein and Mancini
2. Remo Williams-1985 by Safan, very nice score. Similar to his Last Starfighter score. I had some crude tapes of this, but nice to get this now.
Son of Morning Star is my fav by him. Major Payne also really good.
Also, ordering these soon:1. Flyboys-Rabin
2. Kingdom of Heaven-Gregson williams
3. Herrmann at Fox part 2J.

I managed to nab a few on my way home from work:RIDE WITH THE DEVIL - Mychael Danna
-I picked this one up at a used store after I had put it off for a long time since my initial finding of it (thank God for my luck of it still being there). I'm a Danna brothers fan and anything good I can pick up for $6.99 is a nice deal; especially when it's out of print. I've never seen the movie, but being a Western fan, I had to pick the score up. It also has a FishChip recommendation.INSIDE MAN - Terrence Blanchard
-I'll admit, this is my first Blanchard score. This is also one I've been putting off. It's always seemed to escape me or I've always gotten something more "high-profile" ever since Sean recommended it to me during the film's theatrical release. After I viewed it on DVD recently, the score shot to the top of my "must-haves". After two listenings, this thing is the biggest contender for my favorite score of the year. Every minute of it is memorable in my ears. It also feels very Goldsmith- and Barry-inspired, which are two of my favorite things. This is a definite recommend and I'm sure a few that picked it up earlier in the year can vouch. Maybe I'll stop listening soon to get in a hearing of my new Danna score
.

Haven't picked up INSIDE MAN yet though I certainly intend to, I thought the film was very convaluted but the score was great. There was definitely a Barry'ish sound in it.RIDE WITH THE DEVIL is an excellent score to a very fine film.

HOLLYWOODLAND - Marcelo Zarvos
- This was a conflicted purchase. Earlier today, in one had I had two Philip Glass scores (Roving Mars and The Illusionist) and in the other I had this. I've never heard Zarvos' score for Door in the Floor so I made this as a blind buy purely on my love of the film genre and jazz music in film score. So far, it's good. Nothing great as I pointed out earlier in my endless ravings on Inside Man (which I still listen to all-too-frequently
) but it's still a very servicable score that reflects the time period very well. Did I make a mistake in not purchasing either of the Glass releases?

Nuts, I like the new format you've introduced into this thread. Normally I don't visit the "what's new in your collection" threads because I've been accustomed to them being lists... which does nothing for me. I'd like to see others adopt the complete nut format. Yeah, you would be copying the nut... and I know nobody wants to do that. Especially me. My copier lid just doesn't close right, and sometimes the nut ends up just looking like... well, a blackened nut. But regardless, thumbs up![Message edited by PeterK on 09-15-2006]

What do you mean, new format? That he's linking the title to an item in the moviemusic.com store? Here are my (DVD) news, by the way:
* ROGER HODGSON: TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME
The first ever solo DVD of ex-Supertramper Roger Hodgson. Primarily the concert he did in Montreal earlier this year. Electric atmosphere, even though Hodgson was without band and performed solo on piano, guitar and electric piano (with only an added sax player). Lots of great supplements. Only problem is that there's a flaw with the disc, and the last four tracks of the concert are gone. Waiting for a replacement.
* PINK FLOYD: PULSE (2DVD)
From their 1994 Division Bell tour, mainly the Earl Court's gig (I attended their Oslo gig myself this year). Amazing light show and everyone in top form. Only one missing is obviously Roger Waters. Great extras, except that I missed a making of/behind the scenes-documentary. Glad to finally have it on DVD.

Sometimes a blackened nut is just a blackened nut; know what I mean? Yeah, I thought I'd provide some links for those who might be interested in ordering the scores after they read the Nuts Seal of Approval (or Disapproval); maybe give you a little extra money to keep you off the streets
. Because, sometimes a FishChip on the street is just a FishChip on the street.
But back to the point of the thread: new additions:AN AMERICAN HAUNTING - Caine Davidson
- Davidson is a newbie, but that doesn't discount this score as being a toss-away. It's a great little horror score; spooky, thrilling, and emotional when it need be. If you have iTunes and can access this soundtrack (and are a fellow fan of horror music) I definitely say go for this one. This is also completely orchestral, so don't think this is like the recent crop of horror scores that are just made up of creepy, droning atmospherics and noises.SUPERNATURAL - Christopher Lennertz
- This is from a WB show I have yet to watch (nor really have any interest, teenage monster slayers have been done before, and peaked their profection with Whedon's Buffy series) but this score definitely interests me. I've not heard much of Lennertz's work outside of the video game scores he got started in but I'm looking forward to hearing this.(* Of note, Peter, these won't feature clickable links as being that they both don't have official CD releases and must be downloaded off of the internet using a - preferably - pay service)

If you're just starting to look into Blanchard's work, may I suggest these:
http://www.moviemusic.com/soundtrack/originalsinA very jazzy, Latin flavored score with a lot of drama and a great last cue: "Boat to Havana."
and
http://www.moviemusic.com/soundtrack/evesbayou-scoreThis was my first introduction to Blanchard and I was really quite impressed.
and last
http://www.moviemusic.com/soundtrack/cavemansvalentineA rather odd film, but a great score. Very classical and inventive. Also reminds me A LOT of Bernard Herrmann's "Citizen Kane" in it the main theme.

>Did I make a mistake in not purchasing either of the Glass releases?,<I haven't heard Roving Mars so I can't speak on that but I was originally excited about The Illusionist as well. After seeing the film and hearing the score in its entirety I didn't like it as much (the score, I mean) I'm not sure how to verbalize why, but I would counter that maybe you didn't make a mistake.

Also have these coming now:1. Giant-reissue
2. Blood on the Sun-good score by Rozsa from the 1945 Cagney film. He did all the karate fighting in that one long scene. Being very athletic, he trained for quite awhile with a martial arts expert for this movie. Did a good job in there. The music is pretty good. I had the old LP of this from Citadel from long ago. The sound on that wasnt too good. I'm hoping they really cleaned up the sound because it is very good especially the action cues and the fight music for the long karate scene. I've been waiting for this all month:THE BLACK DAHLIA - Mark Isham
- After hearing SoundtrakNet's First Listen, I was hooked; after seeing the film I was thrilled. Now, hearing it on CD, I'm sold. Depending on how the rest of the year plays out (he still has Bobby on it's way), this could very well be Isham's best score. The (as DePalma refers to it) "mourful trumpet" theme is outstanding and Isham plays it himself to perfection. After the opening track, it becomes the domininent theme and it's played to it's full extent (the piano rendition is my favorite). The score is very much in the vain of Goldsmith's LA Confidential so we can officially classify this noir-music as "James Ellroy material". Fans of Golden Age score should appreciate this, as well. As for it being better than Goldsmith's score for LA? I'll have to get back to you on that one.

ALL THE KING'S MEN - James Horner
- This is a bit like my mini-review for The Black Dahlia above: this is a score we got a first listen to on SoundtrackNet. Most of us were impressed and happy that Horner is increasing his ability to write something fresh for a change. Overall, I'm liking it. There are little bits and pieces where the "Hornerisms" are almost unmistakable; but overall, the finished product is solid . . . I would almost consider it worthy of some mention at the end of the year. It's very thematic but the darker moments are more memorable than the softer fare; which I never find with Horner.

Juat wanted to comment on two of the new ones I just got:Remo Williams and the Blood on the Sun and other cues by Rozsa. Like many of the Rozsa fans it was good to get this. The Blood score is very good, although like on the old LP, the sound fluctuates some. This is due to the materials it was made from. I like the music though especially the fight cue for the hand to hand scene. Those two choral cues from Ben Hur and King of Kings on the end of it are very good. I have that old LP they came from. They sound so much better on here. Really nice.
The Remo CD is pretty good. Several good cues. This composer is very underrated and underused. His Son of the Morning Star(the TV movie on Custer) is fantastic. Last Starfighter, Major Payne are also very good. Remo's fanfare sounds very much like the music in Last Starfighter, both written pretty close to each other.
Also these CDs are on the way now:
1. This Island Earth-Stein, Salter and Mancini(clips of the Tarantula score written for an earlier western by Mancini are also in this)
2. Old Gringo-exc western score by Holdridge another very underrated composer
3. Dark City-Jones
4. Voyage to Bottom of the Sea-Goldsmith scored episode
a couple more I cant remember right now.J.

I picked up Lost, Season 2 on Friday night. I've been anticipating this since the second season ended and it's good stuff. A lot of dark creepy stuff..maybe that stuff is just what stands out to me but I'm noticing a lot of it. I was a bit disappointed on my first listen but my second listen is much more enjoyable. So happy these Lost scores are getting released. For now I rate it a 4/5..With further listenings though it COULD be a 5/5. =]

Yesterday I picked up:PETER PAN - James Newton Howard
- I've always had a very strong love/hate relationship with JNH's music. When he scores well, he always knocks it out of the park. When I find that he doesn't; he never hits a foul, it's always a strikeout. This might be one of those strikeouts for me. Take this into account, I love, love, love Jan Kaczmarek's score for Finding Neverland and have a deep soft spot for Williams' Hook (and being as it was the first Peter Pan adaptation I saw as a kid - I didn't see the Disney version until later that year - I have another soft spot for the film: guilty pleasure). Now, when JNH knocks it out of the park, this guy's name is usually associated: M. Night Shyamalan. We can't deny it: Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village are wonderful listening experiences and at least one of them belongs among best scores (I'll give a hint: it starred a raging Aussie with a knack for gratuitous bloodshed in his movies); and to some (more than likely a crazy person who likes being disappointed in horror scores on early Varese CDs) The Sixth Sense might be a favorite. But other directors, it's a tough call. He's certainly filled his repetoire with near-masterpieces Dinosaur and Waterworld and one flawless work: Snow Falling on Cedars. The Peter Pan story has always been a magical story, all of the scores I previously mentioned are magical; why can't this be? This sounds like it wants to be Dinosaur or Treasure Planet and at the same time can't figure out how not to be a Harry Potter score. There are a few good, solid tracks here and there with beautiful orcehstrations and motifs; but it's not enough (and don't get me started on "Flying").
