one of the great pleasures in listening to the music we all love is digging through the stuff you haven't listened to in years it seems and re-discovering what made you buy it in the first place.

I pulled out 2 Portman scores the other day while making a tear-jerker CD for my father, and was reminded how much the drama in music, if done right, just keeps one listening. the two scores were Legend of Bagger Vance, which is just magical, and Only You, which has a similarly outstanding theme that evokes a certain sense of nostalgia.

    nifty.

Hey JJ... long time no talkie, bud.

I recently did this with Portman's stuff too. I really dig Legend of Bagger Vance...

What I find myself doing a lot of lately is actually going back and cycling through older Goldsmith, Williams and Barry. I've got so many albums of theirs... 88 Williams CDs... 161 Goldsmith... can't recall the Barry... and I'm finding it harder and harder to have a sharp mind on all the music like I used to. My collection has grown beyond my mental capacity, lol. It's always fun to go back and listen to those old gems, though.

Listening to King Solomon's Mines right now.

Its funny, Jeron. I have been listening to that King Solomons one a lot lately. Its one I really like. I have always liked several cues on it, but especially the four extras that were on that other LP. They are all on the later Cd. The new names for those on the CD that I am talking about are:

no. 3, 5, 7 and I forget the other. In addition to those I have always liked Forced Flight, esp the opening part of it, Dancing Shots and the opening bars of Pot Luck. Great stuff.

I am also going back and listening to lots of older scores later. I now have around 183 Goldsmith CDs and I have always liked that Blue Max and listen to it often. We saw it at the Ridglea on the Roadshow trip in summer of 66. Those aerial dogfights so much more realistic than the CGI fake stuff in the new Flyboys I saw on TV. That looked terrible.

Pulled out The Haunting recently after about two years and have been loving it. I remember being disappointed when it first came out (of which I wasn't the only one it seems) and I grew to like it as an average score, but now I'm really enjoying it. Something beautiful and deceptively simple about it. A solid album, I think.

The one by Goldsmith? Overall still average, I'd say, but it has a few very nice highlights.

I played JW's Hook earlier. I still don't rate it that highly though it does have some great moments such as 'You Are The Pan'.

IMHO, you can't really rate Hook too highly. I played Star Wars again yesterday, for the first time in several years. Surprised that the SE of this first score actually sounds good.
