One of my top three most anticipated films this Fall - Brian DePalma's The Black Dahlia - has finally got some news in terms of the score. Silva (you heard correct) has some info at their site about the album release and Dan Goldwasser has recently included a First Listen article at his site. Isham's score sounds absolutely perfect on first impression: evoking the time period correctly and setting it well within the universe of James Ellroy historical fiction (listen for the similar Goldsmith LA Confidential orchestrations and inspirations).

I just have to say this: I think the film looks dreadful! Weak photog, bad casting. I guess they're selling the lurid aspect of the story (they can't be selling it on DePalma's worthless pedigree), which is probably all DAHLIA has going for it.

Thanks Ryan! I'm sure you're right! Boy howdy I wish that Brian Tyler would've gotten to score this!

I'll probably wait for the movie first, which fortunately doesn't come out much later here than in the US - I should be able to see it in early October.

As I said before, there are still plenty of promising movies ahead this year.

Just avoid the threads that Ryan comes out of the woodwork to descride his inevitable hate for one thing or another and I'm sure we'll all treat you just fine, James. Sean has a little history with Ryan's vitriolic ravings; so just let him (and recently, me) get it out of our systems and we'll get to talking film music. And, like Peter said, the score's release is upon us (and the film opened up Venice today) so I'm sure when everyone has a chance to hear more of the score (to some people, Dan's thirty second clips mean nothing, unfortunately) this thread will pick back up with actual film and score discussion. Hopefully you can join us at that time and share your thoughts. Until then, happy listening!

From what I've seen of this so far, it doesnt look too good. The book was very good and the old film on TV long ago with Efrem Zimbalist Jr and Lucie Arnaz was very good. A very tastefully done TV film from 1875.

Ohh-noooooo! Oh . . . wait. Peter, don't you (as both High FishChip and administrator) have the ability to delete the hate-spewing posts? After all, the reason I created this post was because I'm much looking forward to the film (as an Ellroy and DePalma fan) and even I didn't expect to be caught off guard by Ryan. Sometimes you just encounter people who scrape their nails against the chalkboard for you and I just can't help but become defense-ful (see also: my last post replying to John). I've let you know how much respect I have for the site, and I'd hate to go down because I was protecting my thread (with nice, inciteful links I might add).

I understand where you are coming from, Nutso. My post that you quoted (that I quickly pulled because your post to James was posted when I was posting my post) was lightedheard in nature, but nullified all the same once you addressed James in your post. I prefer the parties involved should address each other... I hate being pulled in publically when specific expectations are not met between unhappy individuals. I appreciate your attention, and hope all others involved do as well. And darnit, those who've proven themselves fools, I hope it sticks with 'em for next time.

I don't get it -- I post comments to the contrary of "nuts" and I get lambasted... Yet somehow I'm the culprit?

I'm sorry if I don't have slavish praise for FEMME FATALE, MISSION TO MARS, SNAKE EYES... Certainly not the work of a director on a hot streak.

If we're all supposed to agree with each other perhaps Peter should pass out the Kool-Aid?

And Sean, who cares about what Dan Goldwasser wants. He doesn't pull my strings, and last I checked he was run out on rails from this msg board. If that's the kind of company you keep then that's your business.

Holy cow how did I not realize that?! John, you're older than I thought. You guys must have had ace technology to make simple TV productions out of events that occur in the future. I blame the changes on Roosevelt's New Deal; it's that simple .

Nuts, just a matter of personal taste. You see, I went to see Munich and was very disappointed. But I should have known, because the R rating slop was going to be in there from previous experiences. I preferred the old TV film to that one too although parts of it were very suspenseful.

Just a personal preference. You go see it and enjoy. J.

I may give this one a shot. We'll see. This reminds me of the debate we had on Munich awhile back too. Once again I preferred the old TV film 21 Hours at Munich to Spielbergs. Just one view, don't get riled now. LOL.

The old 1975 TV film Who is the Black Dahlia? with Efrem Zimbalist Jr and Lucie Arnaz is quite good. Very well done. There were a lot of very well made TV movies in the 70s like this. Included in those were The Raid on Entebbe with Charles Bronson and an all star cast which came out within a few months after the actual raid. There was also another version, though not as good which came out quickly too. The one mentioned here was the better version though. It also starred James Woods, Peter Finch, John Saxon, Robert Loggia, Martin Balsam, etc. Exc film. and Yaphet Kotto as Amin. He did the role very well too.

    J.

Just saw it. The movie was captivating. I'm going to have to see it again to really comprehend every detail - there's a lot to absorb and I reached saturation point about halfway through.

That said, Isham's score was spectacular. It's one of the best scores I've ever heard from the man, and is truly one I look forward to owning. Highly recommended.

Still very much interested. Even though I'm completely tired of him these days, I even would have been looking for to a Horner score (as originally announced). De Palma has a tendency of getting excellent scores from any composer (even when they're not so interesting musically to make me buy the CD, they still work very well in the movie).
