Ok, new poll is up. I expect bloodshed in this battle of the best scores of summer 2006.Zimmer vs. Zimmer vs. Ottman vs. Powell vs. Newman vs. Geeamochacino.
Arrrrrrrgggggggggh! Really. There's Randy Newman sitting in the ring... does he have any hope with two Han Zimmers coming down the aisle, spotlight shining bright and 4 babes escorting the two hims?? Damn this cloning!

I hope JNH has a good chance at next year's Academy Awards with Lady In The Water.I can't really decide on a "best" summer score. POTC 2 doesn't stand a chance in my book, and the same goes for M:I III.
Probably Superman Returns or X3 ... or Da Vinci Code. I like parts of them, but there's nothing that makes me go "Whoa!"
"Power Of The Sun" came close, though.posted 07-23-2006 08:00 AM PT (US)

FSM is right, "Power Of The Sun" sounds like The Witches Of Eastwick... so good as that theme may be, it once again shows that Ottman should stay away from using a temp score in the editing process: It influences him too much, and from the wrong sources, especially the all-too-obvious references to James Horner (of all people!) and his music for Legends Of The Fall and Brainstorm. X3 sounds too much like Elfman in some places and Barry in others, thus downgrading it's sustainability and appeal. For my money: JHN's Lady In The Water and HZ's The Da Vinci Code take home gold. Now, if only they could combine their powers in the fashion of those two scores then we'd be cooking!

I can't really vote for any of these cleanly... there are parts from each that I like... and maybe there are more parts in DAVINCI CODE than others, but there isn't a clear leader for me. This summer just hasn't lit my fire.

Um, that movie bombed. Disqualified. I know, terrible, as any score figuring in as the "best" probably belongs to the worst box office performer of the year.Really, though: I guess there could have been "other" as a voting option. But then again, that's what this thread is for!

PotC 2 by Zimmer at 41%!!! It's an out-rage; though I did throughly enjoy the film. My money still goes to The DaVanci Code and Nick Cave's and Warren Ellis' score for The Proposition; but since one of those two isn't included in a (FINALLY!) new poll, I chose the one that was available. Though this summer has been lacking quite some, X3 and F&F: Tokyo Drfit stand out in my collection as outstanding contributions by both of their respectable composers (John Powell and Brian Tyler, respectively). And, PK, thanks for not including M. Night Shyamalan's pompous Lady in the Water as a "summer blockbuster". I had to catch that pile-of-shitte after my return trip from Mexico yesterday evening and it's official that Shyamalan needs a writer and NO final cut in his contract. What a wasted potential.

Hmmmmm....M.I.3 -- good action music, but no consistency. Feels like a video game score (albeit a good one at that) since it feels a like they were only concerned with one scene at a time, rather than the whole.
Poseidon -- ughh...
DaVinci Code -- can't comment on its use in the film (didn't see it) but this one has received quite a few turns. Impressed
X3 -- very impressed by Powell's work on this one. Consistent use and development of themes. I enjoyed it slightly more than Kamen's subdued score and much more that Ottman's erratic score for X2.
Superman Returns -- good score with some great "sections." As with almost all Ottman scores it feels "temp-track" in nature for the new material. Overall an enjoyable score.
PoTC -- when I first put this one in the player I choked. Having seen the film and listened a few more times, I must admit to enjoying it. Not a great score, but one fit for this film.
CG Films -- have not seen a single one from this overstuffed group (Cars, Over the Hedge, Monster House, upcoming Ant Bully). Can't see any of them topping this list though.
Lady in the Water -- staying far away from the theatre, but I plan on picking this one up. Judgement reserved for later.
At this point...the vote goes to The DaVinci Code (X3 close behind.)

Someone used the word pompous to describe something above... unrelated perhaps, but I find that term fits almost all the 'scores' machined out this year. The only genuine articles that breathe with their own inner life seem to be Schifrin's Abominable, and at least the intent behind Monster House (Pipes).

Superman Returns has to be the definite stand-out, with such great use of William's themes and original material this score is the score of the summer. On the other hand though, POTC is second because it suffered from a lack of excitment that was only heard in one track (wheel of fortune) and this can be mainly due to the movie's lack of exciting scenes, which kept the score fairly quiet.

There's a ton of exciting music which just didn't end up on the disc. What we get instead is a that awefull whatever track at the end. Somehow Zimmer always manages to leave off some of the most enjoyable tracks. My favorite unreleased Zimmer track being the dog fight scene in Pearl Harbour.

I vote for X Men 3. The Dark Phoenix cues alone had me hooked. But maybe it's too early for this sort of poll. We still have four and a half months left!

Wow, where the heck do you live that you have 4 1/2 months LEFT of summer? My summers are barely (er.. barley!) three months long....Not enough barley.

Sometimes at the Disney offices (in-between non-stop listenings of Tiesto's PotC remix and The Cheetah Girls Too soundtrack) the summers seem to last for like a whole year and the Christmas comes (thank God Eisner's out!) and then it's summer again. Maybe vdemona works with me or near my office somewhere. Or maybe they're just experiencing to love that is Cheetah Girlz Too!

I voted with my wallet. The only one I've bought is Dead Man's Chest. And it's likely the only one of that bunch that I will buy.I liked Superman, but as I told my wife when she asked if I would buy the soundtrack -- I already have most of it (and all the good parts) on my "Superman -- The Movie" CD.

I got WTC yesterday and am really impressed by it.My personal top summer score is Lady in the Water, with The Great Eatlon my absolute favorite cue of the year.
And talking of Dead Man's Chest, I just deleted all but two tracks - I can't stand the rest.

I found The Lady in the Water score to be very moving as well. It reminds me somewhat of The Village, which I own.I like just about anything James Newton Howard creates anyway though!

Are you to tell me that Dead Man's Chest is the official winner of this one? It's leading by a long shot and I don't see anything else catching up before FishChip puts up a new poll (in a few years
). I'm pretty disappointed. I'm sure sweethaley85 is happy.

The new poll will be up in 20 years, actually. My new moniker is Fish Van Crinkle.Everything on the MM site is slow, except for shipping packages. Things happen where the money is.... which gets me wondering:
Can I convince everyone to buy my bubble gum machine quarter receptacle? You plug it into your computer. Every time you put a quarter in, a new poll comes up on the MM site.

POTC 2??? It was too similar to the score from the first one. As I was watching the film I kept hearing the same themes over and over. Don't get me wrong, love the original score but come on...

I'm still pretty upset that PotC 2 managed to nab the top spot on this poll.
