Did we have one of these last month? I didn't buy anything thus I don't remembere posting in one. Either way, a new month has already begun and we have reporting to do!

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST - Hans "Long John" Zimmer

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT - Brian Tyler

DUNE (Expanded) - Toto

I'm a huge fan of Lynch's Dune and the Herbert books, so this score has been eluding me for a time. I finally snatched a copy for cheap off of EBay. Tyler 3 Fast 3 Furious is an interesting score to say the least. It's not to stellar, but the orchestral and rock moments are blended well; "Symphonic Touge" is pure Tyler-delight. I'll share my PotC 2 thoughts on that nice little thread PK started for us.

NP> Zimmer's PotC 2 (?/*****)

This is awesome. The Blood suite is outstanding, and very well played. Plus it was the first time I'd heard Young's fantastic Scaramouche, which then was the reason for me to watch the movie, which then turned out to be brilliant as well.

Syriana - Alexandre Desplat, love this score, but parts kind of remind me of King Kong for some reason...

Pirates 2 - Hans Zimmer, though I don't like it as much as the first one, it's growing on me, aside from the King Arthur and We Were Soliders parts... and the horrible "remixes"

Bulworth - Ennio Morricone, love the first suite on the CD, except for the one woman's vocal parts that weren't in the movie (Thank God!!!)

The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift - Brian Tyler... Once again I found his score to be a copy of other stuff, and once again, I really didn't mind all that much.

Clayton, I'm glad you picked up Bulworth. That theme is one of Morricone's best. There are a lot of 'best' with him, but that theme just seems to hit all of the right notes--literally. And I had the same reaction to the vocal parts (not the Dell Orso part, which is fine) as you did when I first got the album many a year ago, but now they don't really bother me. I guess I've heard much worse. But yeah, that other featured vocalist can really get to howling once she gets going.

Batman (Elfman)

The Last Samurai (Zimmer)

The Da Vinci Code (Zimmer)

I was uneasy about buying The Da Vinci Code. I had listened to some short preview clips from a few tracks and didn't really care for them. I bought it because of all the praise it was getting. It ended up being okay. It isn't really a stand out score from Hans Zimmer. I think the real highlights of the score is "Poisoned Chalice" and "Chevaliers De Sangreal."

Posted this in the soon-to-be long lost 2nd thread--

Found these second hand:

Restoration (James Newton Howard) - $9
The Power of One (Zimmer) - $7

That's about it for the weekend.

I also picked up Horner's Vibes earlier this month for $25. It's not so good.

Actually, it was released by Fontec. I got both the Bekkus from Amazon Japan. Here's the link to Symphonies 3 and 4:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00005EZSZ/249-1385166-8577963?v=glance&n=561956

I really like his stuff so far. I even ordered the DVD of Matango just to hear his score. I also ordered a disc with his 5th Symphony and Piano Concerto, but it's still on backorder. Pretty sad that the one disc I order from the U.S. is the one that hasn't shipped!

NP: Battle Royale II (Masamichi Amano)

No problem. A couple of weeks ago I spent the better part of a night bumbling my way through the Japanese Amazon, Tower, and HMV sites on a quest for Bekku, based solely on the partial clips of his first two symphonies I heard at Naxos's site. I had a bit of luck and found a few other cds of his stuff. In fact just tonight I finally broke down and ordered another interesting item I came across. A double disc set of Japanese violin works.

If my translations are right, it features works by Akira Miyoshi, Irino Yoshiro, Toru Takemitsu, Roh Ogura, Taro Nakamura, Ikuma Dan, Hara Hiroshi, Maki Ishii, and Sadao Bekku. A lot of names I'm not familiar with, but based solely on Takemitsu, Dan, Ishii, and Bekku I though it was worth looking into.

NP: Night Crossing (Jerry Goldsmith)

Great weekend for Goldsmith...I mean, for me. Yesterday, at a Half Price Books, I found Powder for $5. Today, I found Inner Space for the same price.
