Morricone speaking about Italy's fantastic victory over Germany in last Tuesday's World Cup semi-final...

Speaking of music and the World Cup, so far the world's biggest sporting event has been pretty poorly serviced in the music department. There were some decent songs along the way, but compared to the olympics, the World Cup just can't seem to do it right.
The Sony albums are pretty lame most of the time. Instead of finding some way to compile the official songs from the various countries, the Sony albums just push Sony artists. They produce so many different versions you need a full time staff to keep track of the various releases.
Even the official themes aren't all that good. France '98 had some acceptable dance tunes as official anthems, but Vangelis' Korea-Japan Anthem was kind of average. This year isn't much better.
If Morricone is so passionate about football, I'd expect him to come up with something a lot more inspired than the insipid anthems of the past years.
Some of the comments he made in that other interview are interesting.
Particularly when he talks about the lead scorers having trouble scoring in a World Cup, it seems to be the same for other teams (Spain: Raul, Germany: Ballack, England: Lampard, etc).Morricone should write a new concert work: Once Upon a Dive in Germany.
It would musically chronicle every time Cristiano Ronaldo took a dive in World Cup 2006. Should have enough material for a full CD.
Then a second volume: Perché?
Chronicling every time Francesco Totti was booked for diving when in fact he was clearly brought down.posted 07-06-2006 09:03 PM PT (US)

That's awesome. I know Morricone is considered a recluse by so many people... fine, if what he does when not writing cool scores is sitting in front of a 10' wall of a screen watching satellite TV football (soccer) feeds! I'd love to see him dance when Italy scores... or does he get up, run to his piano and belt out a hero's theme we'd otherwise drool over? Hahah...

Ennio spoke like a total sports fan knowing the players by name and knowing the ins & outs of the game as well. Well who would have figured soccer was what floated his boat at 77 years? Then again if you knew 400 movies like the back of your hand watching another one might not be what you want to do in your off hours and I'm sure just because you're a musician doesn't mean you spend all your time at concerts. I've never been a sports fan though. It's only movies for me. Athletics have never impressed me and games are just numbers so I just can't care who wins or loses them. In fact the fascist side of me would abolish all sports everywhere and make people sit down and read instead so I guess it's a good thing for some I'm not calling the shots.

Cool link. I'm actually not surprised that Morricone is a fan for some reason.Dinko's suggestion reminds me of Michael Nyman, who is also a big football (soccer) fan. He's written several pieces of music about it, three of which are collected on the CD "After Extra Time" and the most recent of which (I think) was a piece he wrote for string quartet and tape, in which the tape is a radio recording of a game (it was a game that was special for some reason, but I'm like Lou when it comes to sports so I don't remember these things).

OST, of course). As you say, there's at least one more Nyman football work nowadays. I'm not sure if it's the same you're referring to, but the one I know of is called Beckham Crosses, Nyman Scores. As far as I know, it's still unreleased.

I think it's interesting that Morricone and Nyman are supposedly big football fans, because they both look like bank managers, and people who look like bank managers don't usually like manly sports like football. So I think that both Morricone and Nyman are frauds.

It's no big deal,i dare to say that only in the US,soccer (as americans call it),it's not the favourite sport,so Morricone being italian,as he is,soccer is a major concern for him.But to clarify let me say, that i love most of the US sports,so there's nothing wrong in not liking soccer very much,it's a cultural thingy...

Hey back off pal,if he was not tackled every few meters,he wouldn't dive so much...
But he's not my favourite player,so bash all you want.

I shall never forget Luciano Pavarotti's stirring rendition of "Nessun dorma" he sang as a tribute to Brazil's winning team in 1994.I belong to a minority, being a HUGE soccer fan, being from America, and I guess, being a woman. It's my favorite sport to watch and play, and I coached for nearly 10 years.
One really good score I have dedicated to soccer is "The Game of Their Lives" by William Ross.
For any interested...A huge thread on the World Cup has been going on over at FSM since before the games even began (Non-filmscore discussion side). Many interesting thoughts and comments from fans worldwide.

Yes, that's the one. Don't know how I forgot such a clever title. I heard that piece broadcast on BBC radio after its premiere and was pretty underwhelmed, actually. It felt basically like listening to a game on the radio with a tiny little bit of string quartet music added here and there, almost as if Nyman thought the game itself was so enjoyable that he was afraid of intruding on it.AET is indeed a fine album, though. I went and listened to it again after hearing the newer piece.

Winning or losing on penalties sucks. Not that Italy didn't deserve it. You should have seen me with my Italian shirt in a French bar...
But there's something not right about winning on penalty shoot outs.Maybe they should play 120 minutes, then send in the substitutes. That should change the game's dynamic.
Zidane's headbutt was much more professional than Figo's. Maybe that's the difference between the card colours. Figo's headbutt wasn't as good so he just got yellow.

I think it's shameful that they still ave him the Golden Ball despite the final... Cannavaro should have won it all the way
