Film Music needs to stretch the boundaries and get more radical.

I WANT a science fiction film to have a polka flavored soundtrack.

I WANT a religious epic to have a heavy metal/grunge soundtrack.

I WANT an urban street gang drama to be scored with an accordion.

    Oooooo . . . Don't get me started!

Gumdrops--With all respect to Brechtian alienation technique, I want to get lost in the films I watch, not jarringly reminded what constructions they are.

In any case, you get your wish, Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is set to pop tunes and the blend of costume drama and modern music probably fails to transport you to any other world than your theater seat.

You may be sick of film music that fits its images and want something radical but it's been tried before (Shotgun Slade anyone?) and it rarely works. There's a reason why the incongrous and anachronistic are to be avoided in art and it's called cognitive dissonance.

You want that, go to a modern art gallery but leave my precious cinema alone.

    Thanks Sir Sean.

I've posted here before in the last several months.

My three favorite composers are Herrmann, North, and Barry.

I love a lot of today's composers like Kenji Kawai, Philip Glass, John Powell, Howard Shore, and Christopher Gordon.

I've been listening to film music for over forty years. I love it all. Yuk Yuk.

But Lou, orchestral music is often incongruous and anachronistic itself. To continue with your example of Marie Antoinette, a truly non-anachronistic score would have to use only instruments or compositional techniques that were in existence during or before 18th century France. The only reason a score with a modern orchestra and modern techniques wouldn't seem anachronistic to you is because you've been conditioned to accept it over the years.

I'm not saying you can't be angry when someone does something different. I just think you might be using an argument that isn't actually related to the true motivation of your anger. I usually don't like the insertion of non-orchestral music in period settings either, but that's usually because I just don't like the music itself, or because it doesn't work dramatically with the picture (which is a problem that is hardly unique to non-orchestral scores).

Few people are aware of the theremin's very real capacity for serious beauty, so I'm all for this idea.

WOW Sir James. Now that's what I'm talkin' about. This piece of music could easily fit in the context of an urban drama. I listened to it three times and I'm going to have to investigate this Misty Hymen and John Hollenbeck. Thanks.

Couldn't agree with you more. I caught the documentary on Theremin and it was very revelatory.

Barry Gray used the theremin to acheive beautiful results in his score for DOPPELGANGER aka JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN. Beautiful, haunting music.

You're the funny one, Sir Lou.

This is an exercise. Pure and simple. Sure I'm being ridiculous but at the same time I'm challenging my own conventions on what constitutes film music and where its placement should be.

I'm not a 14 year old fanboy. Sorry. I may not have your ivory tower education on musicology but I KNOW film music and its composers. My collection consists of over 5000 albums on filmscores, 2000 plus on cds. I'm aware of all the greats from Addison to Zorn. I have a thorough education on Italian film music thanks to my friend John Bender who wrote a column for FSM on such a subject. I've met and conversed with over 15 film music composers in my life including Leonard Rosenman, Claude Bolling, Jerry Goldsmith, Philip Glass, and Christopher Young. In my cd player you'll find Rozsa's SPELLBOUND CONCERTO along with Kenji Kawai's PATLABOR 2002 and Carlo Rusticelli's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. So I have a wide appreciation for all the artform's participants.

PS: I'm sorry you don't find most of this funny but others do. So let the WANT lists continue!

DOUBLE PS: I like you and many of your posts on other threads. Just havin' fun dude. Yuk Yuk.

TRIPLE PS: Flaming Queen? My wife thinks that's funny. Yuk Yuk.

This one was prompted by something I just read on another post.

Take an updated modern action film and track it with those cues from the old Capitol film music library cues. Image that dynamic action music used in Ruff and REady, US Marshal and tons of old TV series like Rescue 8 and Soldiers of Fortune. It would work, I tell ya. J. I'm hoping that one day we get a CD of those old library cues. They are really good.
