I was down the fruit market the other day, and this was there under a lettuce. At nearly 20 Euros I passed. I've seen it here (the FishChip site) and at Screen Archives for less, but it's the kind of thing I'd never actually send away for, not because it's not good but rather because there are too many Goldsmiths and Herrmanns that I never find down the fruit market here, and that's what I send away for. From the cover, this looks like the Varese issue. What really called my attention was the 30 minute bonus track at the end. I've got the old LP of Gato Barbieri's score, and I absolutely love it, but according to some sources, this new track (or tracks) was culled from the original scoring sessions. And yet I've still to see the great Oliver Nelson's name attached to this. In the film itself, Nelson's brilliant orchestrations come to a head near the end, so much so that it almost sounds like an Oliver Nelson score. Anyway, what am I saying. Basically - What is this last 30 minute track of scoring sessions?

Hey Graham, remember our previous discussion here?: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.asp?threadID=2082&forumID=1 Anyways, is the Varese CD you found the same as the Ryko release? [Message edited by Thor on 05-17-2006]

I certainly do remember that little chat, Thor. That's when I was young and opinionated. Now I've read so much about everything I don't know what to think anymore about anything! As far as I can tell, the Varese (or Colosseum) issue differs from the Ryko one only in that the final suite is one piece. I think the Ryko had it broken up into separate short tracks, or at least that's what the tracklisting suggests. Whether or not there is really any difference to the ear, I don't know. Anyway, any info on that last track or tracks? Is this really Oliver Nelson in charge?

I don't know if all those tracks are Gato Barbieri or Oliver Nelson, all that I do know is that this is a great score and all those tracks are superb, in many cases must better than the music that was on the original OST. Buy the thing. You will not be disappointed. It is great.

I ended up getting this, and it IS great. As I mentioned before, I've had the old LP re-recording for years, but what's really interesting on the Varese is the 30 mins of original score. Oliver Nelson's hand was never downplayed when discussing the expanded "re-imagining" of the score which proved to be a big seller in its day, but I've found some quite contradictary comments from some sources about his work on the original scoring sessions. Most seem to downplay his contribution. Listening to the new(ish) suite of original score, I'd say that Nelson played a HUGE part in it. Some brief passages sound as if they could even form part of the ZIGZAG score (the throbbing double bass, the piano lines etc). It's a truly brilliant CD. I'm giving Gato Barbieri his due, but I think he should at least half share the credit with the late great Oliver Nelson.
