Hello. I've told you all ten million times how great the Elisabeth Lutyens score for the 60s Amicus horror movie is. Right, it's been out for a few years (well, about twenty minutes of it) on a re-recording. Have any of you got it, and how does it sound? I'm asking mainly because, if it were the original soundtrack I'd have no hesitation, but I imagine that Lutyens' "difficult" score must have been a nightmare to do right. So was it done right?

On the same disc is Britten's LOVE FROM A STRANGER (which is what the CD is called, and the centre-piece of the whole thing), along with bits from Richard Rodney Bennett's RETURN OF THE SOLDIER and Roberto Gerhard's THIS SPORTING LIFE. What are these scores like?

But the Lutyens piece is the one that most interests me at the moment. If the other scores (and the interpretation) are good, so much the better.

    Thanks.

Is this disc still available because if it is I'm just going to buy it and tell you what it sounds like.

It's still in the Screen Archives catalogue, Lou. Check under LOVE FROM A STRANGER there. I think I might just go ahead and pick this up myself. As I say, I know the Lutyens score, but not the others. Any comments about them?

I've seen Love From A Stranger. Weird they should choose Britten for this film which is basically a 3-act play by Christie the last part all set inside a cottage. Britten's score is mainly used for transitions like shots of the boat taking the characters from one place to another. I didn't think it was very special but figured it might be worth a play away from 1937 British recording sound (the Brits usually do re-records well enough). I didn't see Return of the Soldier but since when is any RRB bad?
