Just watched this on Channel 5 on British TV and just want to say how fantastic Goldsmith's score is to this Classic movie. My favourite moment's are "The Hunt" and "No Escape" but the whole score is a masterpiece of frenetic and atmospheric dissonance.

Amazing score! I remember first purchasing the LP on Project 3 records in '74. I had seen the "Go Ape!" release with all five "Apes" films re-released on ONE program and Goldsmith's music blew me away. Varese Sarabande has the good sense to keep this one in print (they deleted "Chinatown" a couple of years back). If you have seen the film and don't own the score, well . . . (no comment!)

The Hunt is a (the?) highlight, of course. But the entire movie before that builds up a very convincing atmosphere, and the score is very important (and effective) there.

I didn't mention it in the review, but "The Search Continues" is also one of the most distinctive cues in the film.Truly one of Goldsmith's best.

Gae, good to see you crawling out the woodwork once more. I'm not posting much myself these days (old and tired), and I suppose that all that has to be said about PLANET OF THE APES has been said a million times before, hence the lack of replies. But let me just repeat that Jerry Goldsmith's score is one of the best film/music marriages ever. And even as a stand-alone experience. I can't understand people who find it "difficult". It's so consistently interesting, it's just amazing. "Difficult" is bland and boring, but POTA is the complete opposite of that (in my humble opinion - and if you don't agree, your taste is in your bottom!).And I don't say that just because I've been reading Lou Goldberg.

its an effective score in the film, as a stand alone experience its unlistenable, and my taste isn't in my bottom, its just my opinion, as valid as yours.

Joe, "unlistenable" as a standalone experience? Please elaborate. I know it's all about taste, but I'm interested in why it doesn't work for you, apart from "I don't like it". I don't like rap, but I stay awake at night wondering why I don't.

There are several cues in the Planet score I have always liked. I used to listen to the LP a lot when I was serving in Europe long ago, but there was one cue I didnt really listen to til later. One day I was listening to the Project 3 LP ten years later in Oklahoma when working there and I rediscovered how good the No Escape cue was. I also like the Clothes Snatchers cue and all the short revelation cues. All really good. That Clothes cue reminds me of one in Patton.J.
